My signal went down roughly 10-minutes before the fight on Saturday. Thought it was Setanta problems until the rest of the channels went. I watched Laing-Collins instead then got up the next day to start downloading and to phone Sky.
We went through the technical messing about and the guy got to the words Sky love to say: "We can charge you £60+ and send an engineer out". I explained to them that I have had Sky for near 10-years and that without fail either the box or dish breaks every 18-months and I have to pay for an engineer so I was not doing it again. The smart bastard offered me the insurance plan for my equipment.
I'd had enough but spent so long on hold waiting for the cancellation people I thought "fook it" and inquired about getting Sky+/HD. That way my box gets replaced. They told me as an existing customer I would pay £300 (engineer coming out again) for Sky+. Or, given the money I've coughed-up over nearly a decade, they could knock it down to £240. The generous bastards.
I don't mind paying for TV costs, I don't mins paying for fights or the odd football match but why pay for a service that is generally quite overpriced and is supported by parts that breakdown regularly? I asked them for the same digital box Rupert Murdoch uses (I imagine that is one that lasts), they refused, I'm cancelling as soon as I get home. They are dirty robbing bastards and I don't care how much boxing I miss.
I know for a fact that if I pay the engineer to come out my dish or box will fail within 18-months and I will be back to square one.
For now I will download the essential fights and miss the others. Anyone know of a non-robbing bastards alternative to Sky? If I was a non-Sky customer I would get Sky+ for far cheaper than as an upgrade. They are a bunch of pricks. Any suggestions?
Apologies for the rant. It always seems to happen at crucial times. Do they put mini-charges into the devices so they blow every 18-months?
Why didn't you call me Terry, you have my number???????
Let's get something straight. Sky, Comet, Dixons and every other company have agreements which clearly state their warranty period, be it 12 months, 2 years or whatever. It rambles on for several pages of small print which nobody bothers to read BUT at the end of any warranty given by ANY company within th U.K. they MUST by law put a statement which says THIS DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR STATUTORY RIGHTS.
Neither Sky or anyone else can tell Parliament that the laws of this country are superseded by their pathetic warranties.
What are your STATUTORY RIGHTS????
Under the both Sale of Goods Act 1979. and the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982. every transaction carries a 3 year warranty that the goods are fit for purpose and will be for 3 years, subject to fair wear and tear. The burden falls on the seller/provider to satisfy a Court, on the balance of probabilities that, you have abused or misused the goods in some way. A very difficult task unless there is clear damage to the equipment.
Under European law which must and has been adopted by the U.K. the warranty is 6 years. However, after 3 years the burden shifts to the purchaser to satisfy the Court on the balance of probabilities that the goods had a built in defect from the time of manufacture.
Comet, Curries, Dixons etc. tell you that they give 12 months warranty but for an additional fee they will extend it. This is a rip off, you already have 3 years BY LAW. show them the bit on their own warranty, which MUST be there by law and tell them that you don't need to purchase any exta warranty as yopu are covered for 3 years under the terms of their own warranty by virtue of the mandatory clause which allows you to rely upon your Statutory rights.
Tell Sky that unless they fix your box, or whatever else it is which needs fixing within 7 days, you will issue proceedings in your local county Court without further reference to them.
Any claim under £5,000 is classed as a small claim and no matter who wins, neither side can claim their costs. You can deal with it yourself and apart from a small issue fee, which you get back if and when you win, it will only cost you the time to go to Court, no wigs and gowns or legalise, and sit in a room round a table to tell a District JUdge your story.
They will have to employ a solicitor, £500 to talk to and about £1,500 if they are stupid enough to go to Court. None of which they can get back.
All the big companies "bottle it", it's cheaper for them to fix the fault or replace the eqipment than to go to Court, bevause even if they win, they are out of pocket.
Hit them where it hurts most and fight them. Get your head out of those books for a change or come and play snooker again.
