Choi is hard as a coffin nail IMO. Just an impression. He comes from the land of Mongolia, them folks are tough from what I've seen. They break in wild horses and make them do work and hard stuff like that..........if Derry Matthews gets dirty, Choi will deal with like for like, of that I am certain, and I don't mean certain like I was certain Enzo Mac would've won on points, I mean proper certain.
It looks clear that Choi will have to get inside and work as I'd say he'll be giving away a good bit of heart and reach. I'm pleased he's got a big fight for a change :box:
that meant to say HEIGHT and reach!

quoting my bloody self has it really got that bad?

i thought I'd revive this thread as in boxing terms it is laterally speaking the thread to talk about this fight.

i'm claiming credit for giving Choi a shout. Haye Maccarinelli was just a blip to NorthEastBoxingFan.........normal service has firmly been restored.

Watch out for victories for both Woods and Calzaghe shortly, although please go to another thread to discuss and don't use this one. Choi is a little bit "limited" let's say when it comes to speaking much English though he has a better bash at it than most Brits speak other languages but it was real disappointing to see him given NO interview WHATSOEVER in light of his SPECTACULAR win over Matthews, given as has been pointed out he's lived here for some years now and is a cult figure in some parts, lets not ruin the thread by talking about others.

Also as I stated on the "new" thread Matthews deserves no small amount of credit for getting off the canvas a few times but almost as much for his magnanamous attitude after the fight. What an honest, decent fella......I'm sure there's better to come from him and I do believe he'll come back even stronger from this beating if he uses it as a learning fight. Top men :box:

Agree- but at the end of the day it was a Sports Network show, and him being the "away" fighter its unlikley they would interview him- typical interviews talk about career plans etc, its all part of the promotion.

Mathews has been well and truly exposed - Although he did looked weight drained to me.

He's not going to be a world beater though, no where near.

I was really that sold on Dirty Derry anyway. He's shown he can box well at times but I thought he was there for the taking against someone who he couldn't bully.

Choi was just all wrong for him.

Wow, what a referee, what a disgrace, he did everything he could to save Matthews. This referee will be hired forever and will always have a job to protect Warren fighters.
Obiviously it happans everywhere in every country in the world, but it just sucks to see it again :x
I wish Choi will have a shot at some major belt, he deserve it :TU:

That was a world title bout? now I know why the WBU only has British fighters as world champions.

Really though it was a mess, it seemed to me like 2 novices fighting and should be classed as world title contenders nevermind a world title fight.

What is happening to boxing today.

If that was a main event for a world title how many would be sat in the crowd, and more to the point were you stage it, in a phone box.

Congrats to Choi who at 36 finally gets a break. But you have to say Choi although obviously tremendously strong(I dont think ive ever seen a featherweight as solidly built as him) is quite limited - you would have expected Matthews to have boxed rings around him. But Matthews and his corner got their tactics completely wrong - firstly after getting caught with the big overhand -right, Matthews continued to move to his own left with his chin in the air thus walking onto the righthand of choi. Surprised his corner didnt tell him this. Also every time Derry would throw a single jab Choi would lauch a overhand right over the jab - Derry should have feinted with the jab and varied it to avoid being countered but he failed to adapt. Obviously easier said than done but I think it showed a lack of boxing intelligence on Derrys behalf and perhaps his corner. But Im sure he'll come back from this a better fighter. And really hope someone gets Choi a meaningful title fight - he derserves it and you'd have to give him a chance against anyone who stands in front of him.

Matthews showed a tremendous amount of heart, but I do believe that the fight should have been stopped a lot sooner.

Saying that; this is why we need to get rid of all these alphabet trinkets!

I'm staggered that Matthews was a 'world' champion; it's truly laughable!

The thing is, we all know that the WBU is a second-tier title. But to the public who got to fights, the tag "World Title" sells tickets- simple as.

That said, I think the only two world need to sell tickets at that venue are "Amir Khan."

I totally agree, it was really laughable the way Parris kept giving Derry extra time and the slow counts too!.... at one point he even seemed to stop the count at 9 when Derry wasnt properly up!... I'm surprised he didnt give Derry a cup of tea while he was at it.... smelt very bad!... in the end though it just helped Derry take more of a beating....

Good luck to choi who is very strong and good to watch but Derry is domestic class at the most and thats it... he was lucky to get past Simpkin and should have been disqualified in that fight, so I wasnt really upset to see him put on his backside.....

Choi vs Arthur would be a good match.... I could see Choi being too strong for Alex.... Choi vs Mitchell would be another good one....

congratulations to choi who,s a real nice guy out of the ring,he's had no favours throughout his career and deserved his chance on the bigger stage and god did he take it,derry is i feel to tall and slender for the weight and it was only a matter of time as he moved up in class that he would falter,12 rounds is a long time if u havn't got the physical attributes to keep your opponent off with either srength or power of punch, surely a step or two up in weight will help mathews who has undoubted ability ,as for choi he can give most in the division a scrap no finese just brutal strength and hope he can move off the little shows in oldham and finally earn a few quid, dont really see warren or any other british promoter to eager to sign him hope im wrong, well done choi done oldham proud :TU:

I agree, but frankly can't see it given Mitchells age ( he already is a Super feather) he may well move up a weight soon.
