Brian Schumacher is in prison for murder, he was captain of Britain's Olympic boxing team in 1984 and twice fought for the British title as a pro. A mate of mine was in nick about six years ago and Schumacher still had fifteen years of his sentence to go. At meal times he used to sit there, bang his knife and fork on the table and sing "Fifteen years to go, Fifteen years to go"!

Tony Ayala Jr. chose being butt raped over the guarantee of riches and fame that lay at his feet. He is a guy that should have just been lobotomized instead of returning to prison again. What a waste!

shuttit you mug. delaneys away because he cant control his temper with people smaller than himself. i dont joke to disrespect the family of the fella he killed, quite the opposite. it was a dreadful thing for big baaad garry delaney to do and i hope he uses his time away to ponder on where his actions have got him.

Yeah Mo got about 7 or 8 years for manslaughter. He was working the doors at the time and ended up chinning a punter who hit his head off the pavement or curb.

I know Mo very casually (fought on a few of the same amateur shows as him and have a few of the same acquaintances and friends) and he appeared to be a really nice fella. I remember going to the club where he worked once (unbeknown to me at the time) with my brother and few pals and couldn't believe that he was working the doors. I remember saying to my brother why is he putting himself in the firing line given that pissed up arseholes who don't know who he is will almost certainly want to have a pop at him given that he's only about 5ft 6ins.

Unfortunately that worked out all too prophetic.

why am i a mug you dont even know me???? all im saying is you seem to dig people out who cant answer for them selves it seems that you've got some history with delaney but it would be polite to keep it to your self

sorry mister :TU: but it was you who started having a pop because i told it like it is about delaney. its no secret about what a swell fella he is. i cant really see your point about garry not being able to defend himself from people like me having a go at him. when you get put away for hitting an innocent man so hard that he doesnt have time to say goodbye to his wife and kids you rule yourself out of partaking in some of the niceties of life, like, for instance, posting on BOXREC. as i have never committed murder and am currently free to walk the streets - i can.

Isn't ex-European champ Sammy Reeson in prison?

by joe kurtz
Ah yes, the old fighters & crime subject.

Not a pleasant one for sure, but nevertheless a fascinating one.

Unfortunately, a lot of my experience with this has ended with death rather than in prison. Going all the way back to my first few days in the gym as an amateur just after I'd turned 17. This was in 1978 when THE place to train in Buffalo was Singer's Gym on Main street.

And being the green kid in the place I got to hear all the stories from the other fighters, trainers & gymrats. One of the first being the story of an old time pro from Buffalo by the name of Henry Snowflakes who apparently killed someone & became a victim of the electric chair ( which ironically was invented in the Buffalo area ).

Then there was the tale of a solid pro middleweight out of the city by the name of Al Quinney who was killed by someone with a meat cleaver.

As I continued training there & began my own fighting career I got to know, befriend, spar with & even fight some men who came to bad ends.
One of which was my stablemate from my hometown of Lockport ( a small city about 15 miles from downtown Buffalo where I lived at the time ) by the name of Pat Cuillo.

Pat was a teak tough lightheavyweight/cruiserweight contender whom his one time trainer Angelo Dundee once told me could have definitely been a champion if he'd dedicated himself to his boxing career & stayed out of trouble. But, Pat had an almost legendary bad temper that resulted in quite a few bad scrapes with the law.

One of which was his beatdown of a couple of big guys by the name of the Harrington brothers who were considered to be just about the toughest guys in Lockport at the time. Individually that is. But Pat got into it with BOTH of them at the same time at a local tavern & it ended up with Cuillo having to be pulled off of the two of the prone forms by the cops.
There was also a beatdown of some dude at Lockport's Outwater Park as well as another outside the ring KO of some big Marine at the local Golden Gloves tourney.

All of which made the western New York area an undesirable place to be for Pat due to the charges against him being likely to wind up in a jail term.

So, Pat hit the road for Florida in '80 - '81 which is where he wound up being trained by Dundee & he won the state title. Before trouble caught up with him there & he resurfaced in Atlantic City. Although now, he was fighting under the "Vic Valentino" moniker.

Which is the name under which he fought for the remainder of his career before succumbing to a drug OD in 1986.

Cuillo peaked at the fringe contender/journeyman level rather than at the top level that he could have reached had he been more disciplined, but he still enjoyed a damned good career with wins over the likes of Mustapha Hamsho, Jimmy Young, Leon "Nightlife" McDonald, & Steve Zouski. As well as giving tough fights to men like Eddie Gregory ( Mustapha Muhammad ), Dwight Braxton ( Qawi ), Tony Mundine, Richie Kates, Walter Santemore & a host of others.

Some of my other brushes with "boxers & death" are :

Back in early '79 in what was my just sixth amateur bout, I was put in a MUCH more skilled & experienced fighter from Niagara Falls by the name of JL Ivey. Although he just "pitty patted" me around non-stop for five two minute ( one sided ) rounds, I DID have one brief moment in the first round when about 30 seconds in I rocked him with a good right hand. :D
But, the whole rest of the way he just slapped the piss out of me!

Not that that embarasses me in the least because he went onto move to Detroit, hook up with Manny Steward & Kronk & become a contender. Unfortunately, Ivey, though a helluva boxer couldn't punch a lick ( which I can well attest to having eaten about 1000 of his shots over the course of our ten minute affair  ) which resulted in him losing to the really top level guys that he mixed with like Genaro Hernandez.

Anyhow, once Ivey's career was through he returned to Niagara Falls, got mixed up in the drug dealing "gangsta" scene, shot someone dead & then got put down himself in a bit of "street justice" a short while later.

Hey Pug, how's it goin'?

I'm certain Pat did train with Salerno back then. I remember speaking with Salerno about his sparring sessions with Pat on a couple of occasions when I was working on the cards when James fought in Binghampton back in the late '80s - early '90s.

You were in with a good fighter Joe.
I remember Ivey too.
He was a nice fighter .
He was part of a TOUGH Kronk gym back in the early eighties.
You can look back with pride at that experience.

Robert Pew, a super middleweight who was featured in The Ring's New Faces section in the 1980's, either is or certainly was in prison for murder.
At one time he was rated as a fairly hot prospect and was something like 12-0 (9) before Murray Sutherland ( I think) derailed him with a TKO.

Oh, for sure. And I do. Thanks. :TU:

BBack to my other experiences:

Annother gentleman that I trained, occasionally sparred with & fought an exhibition with back in the day was Dave Friedman. Who was a decent local amateur fighter at light heavy.

Anyhow, Not too long after our exhibition bout he got into an argument with the chick that he lived with here in Buffalo & she grabbbed a big ol' kitchen knife on him. After which he foolishly dared her to have a go at him, which she did. Plunging it into his heart as he sat on the couch watching TV. End of story for him. :(

In another knife related death that claimed a stablemate & friend of mine, Calvin "Pop" Porter was stabbed to death outside of a corner deli near his home in Niagara Falls by some punk that basically "suckered" him with the blade. Like Friedman, Porter got it right in the heart.

Porter was a top nationally rated amateur welterweight in the late '70's who went on to have a good pro career after relocating to Philly & the Frazier camp. He fought often in AC & beat future two time WBO welterweight champ Manning Gallloway on national TV. Dropping him twice.

Oh yeah, I remember "Few Survive" Pew from the good ol' days of the USA Friday Night Fights. Which featured him often until he ran into the rugged journeyman Ricky Stackhouse who took away his unbeaten record. Then Sutherland further exposed him as a rather severely limited banger.

Yeah he had some cool nicknames Pew, if nothing else. Few Survive was one of them and Mandril was another!! Apparently a mandril is an aggressive baboon!! Although it has other connotations now!!
