Just because he was boxing on the front foot in that ABA final doesnt mean he isnt a counter puncher - could you not see him trying to draw leads? Maybe you need to watch a bit more boxing and post a little less

If you have seen him box loads, and I have no reason to doubt you, then the fact that you cant appreciate his counter punching ability is even more hard to fathom.

Whatever, obviously we have different ideas of what constitutes a counter-puncher. George Groves is good going forward and generallty overwhelms his opponents with solid shots. He might throw an occasional counter-punch, but he is not a counter puncher in the sense that he deftly slips to the left, right, or backwards and comes back with dazzling combinations. Jones, Mayweather, Kindelan, Rigondeaux, Whitaker...they're counterpunchers...even little Luke Campbell can be described as a counter-puncher. Groves' biggest asset is his strength.

Also, no one said Degale was robbed, but in a fight that close, he was NEVER going to get it in London. Either way, Groves had his chance in a multinations tournament in Sheffield, and he got beat. In the same tournament Degale won gold. There can be no qualms as to who should go to Beijing.

If i was going to sign anyone from around middleweight in the amatuers it would be that irish lad, think his names Sutherland, he just looks made for the pro's . He's got good speed and great power

Sutherand has a history of eye problems doesnt he? He had beaten Degale on a couple of ocassions I believe, although Chunky got past him when it mattered in the qualifiers.

That said, he qualified himself at Athens for the Olympics, and as you say Ian he is a big strong fellar.

Could definitly be one for the pros once Beijing is out of the way - his is a bit too predicatable to beat the top ams I would have thought.

I wasn't suggesting that the wrong man had got the plane ticket to Beijing - fair play to Degale for stepping up and delivering when it mattered - what I was trying to get across was that it must be a tough pill for Groves to swallow, knowing a guy he has previously beaten from his own club is going to Beijing and he has a 4 yr wait in store if he wants to try again for 2012.

The pros must seem an attractive prospect at this stage..

How old is Groves? I think he'd make an excellent pro. His supporters acted a bit like dickheads at the ABA londons though

Groves is twenty years old. I think he's likely to get KOed in the pro ranks if he keeps the same style. He was KOed in the first round as an amateur about two years ago by a guy called Travis Dickinson. Groves likes to fight too much.

Agree with those who spoke about Sutherland. He's a tremendous prospect and he's a genuine nice guy, unlike Groves who thinks he's God.

Born in Dublin, Ireland to an irish mother and a west indian father. Spent my early life living in Tottenham, London until i was about 8 yrs old.. The family relocated to the island of ST. In May 06 sustained a serious eye injury in competiton which threatened to end my boxing career. Required surgery and now have permanent plates in my left eye to reinforce the eye socket (nice lol). Have made a full recovery and plan to defend my nationl middleweight title in the seniors in Jan 07. Then i can push on for the Olympic qualifiers later in the yr..

I believe he boxed for them as an amateur, and not for too long. Seriously though, he is a really genuine guy. This is his life, and he is good and clever enough to become a world champion.

Groves was obviously gutted at missing out on beijin and thats why he has gone pro! But you saying he won't make a good pro is complete rubbish! He will adapt to the pro game with ease! he does need to tighten up his defences but that will not be a problem for him!
As for him being chinny because Dickenson KO'd him, he wasn't KO'd as you stated he was given two count and the bout was stopped, which happens in amatuer boxing!!
Also for the battle for the olympic spot, Degale is going and he deserves it for his hard work, but Groves didnt seem to get a look in after he beat him, he went on to win the ABAs in his first senior year stopping 4 out of 8 on his way through. He didn't get the nod against degale because the bout took place in london, thats also complete rubbish, Groves is from west london Degale from north london WHERE THE BOUT TOOK PLACE???
The first chance he got was after missing out on the worlds was in the sheffield multi you mentioned. But little things that wasn't mentioned are Groves had to box twice in the semis, first against the swedish middleweight who he beat comfortable (who infact won the 2nd european qualifer in italy) then the olympic champion from kazakstan 2 hours later who he ended up losing to but with a very iffy desision, while degale beat the french no.2 by 1 point. Fair play to degale he went on to win the gold in the final while groves lost in the box off, but boxed with a back and elbow injury!

But hey only time will tell as to how these young fighters futures will turn out, but for me Groves has a bright and colourful one ahead of him!

yh thats well sed by londoner101, its a very good point that u mentiond that groves boxed twice in the semis aginst the swedish and then against the olypic gold, and i would like to say he boxed twice when he beat degale in the londons last abas (degale was the second bout)
george will definitly make a good pro because he adapts his style to whatever works best for him (as u can see when he boxed up in sheffield this aba) And alot of georges fans like him so much is because DOESEN'T think hes god and hes not big headed, not like other boxers out there.

I noticed that Boxrec have Haye's next fight as 18th October rather than the 29th November date mentioned. Does anyone know where that date came from or if this means they brought it forward because they found an opponent?

The earlier the better for me but that makes Rahman less likely as i can't see an old fat HW fighting twice in 3 months in this day & age.
