Maybe McGirt is trying to get him to try new things and they're not sitting well with Smigga at the mo, maybe it was just a bad day at the office
I rated Smith as a future British champ at least.
Don't think McGirt Is good for a guy like Smith, Smith's strengths are power and agression and he's gotten too defensive and on the backfoot since training with McGirt.

Feel sorry for Paul, really nice kid.
As for the fight, true he didn't box to his best of abilities as he'll be the first to say, but no way did he lose the fight.
The crowds reaction told you what they thought too.
Everyone around where i was sitting were just gobsmacked when the ref gave it to Bendall.

No great shock IMO.
No offence to the guy but I think he started to believe his own hype a bit and took his foot off the pedal after the Contender. This might wake him up.
He has the ability to get to British level, but he'd have to work hard. He's not world class.

I know Chambers, quite a few people on here get on my wick with stuff like this...coming out of the woodwork, etc.
I certainly felt - and still feel - that Paul Smith can make it to British title level at the very least and, perhaps, beyond.
As for his heart not being in boxing, I spoke to him a few weeks ago and the lad is completely obsessed with the sport. Perhaps the defeat just made him look downhearted and understandably so too.
Would like to see a full video of this fight to see how it went - and I respect 'd' so if he says it was a bit of a dodgy verdict, perhaps there's something in that. But I would have expected Smigga to not leave a match against Bendall in any doubt in the first place.

Not sure who that's aimed at but from my perspective I've not thought much of the guy since day one. Not a bad fighter but not as good as everyone makes out.
After the Contender he looked sluggish and began to fancy himself a bit IMO. This may be the freash start he needs. Has a bit of talent, hope he gets himself back in check and comes back stronger, but he's not world class. Not even Euro class unless he works on his defence and his output.

Yeah, Banks is most certainly British title class (if he was eligable), look how Ayala held himself well vs Abraham and Banks beat him (quite deservedly) twice in fights in which he wasn't the local favourite.
I know it was only a limited rounds fight, but that victory is as good as most domestic middles have achieved, but agree that he hasn't looked that good since teaming up with McGirt.

1 loss doesn't mean the end of a career, maybe Smith started to believe the hype, and this will be the reminder he needed.
Most of the reports i've read has said that Smith deserved the win, so a rematch would be good. maybe get it on in Liverpool.

How many people have actually seen the fight because I know the only part shown was the referee announcing Bendall as the winner.
I'm going to wait until I have seen the fight. From what I read it was quite a controversial decision.
DEVASTATED Paul Smith was picking up the pieces of his boxing career today after being robbed of his English title and unbeaten record in the Midlands.
The 25-year-old middleweight was still some way off his best as he slugged his way through 10 scrappy rounds with Coventry's Steve Bendall, but looked to have done more than enough to secure a comfortable points victory.
However, referee Mark Green had other ideas and silenced the near capacity crowd inside the National Indoor Arena by raising Bendall's arm after the final bell.
The way Bendall celebrated – like he'd won the lottery – best reflected the bizarre decision of the third man in the ring. Promoter allegedly led the remonstrations at ringside.
Smith took the decision on the chin, shaking hands with his opponent and remaining in the ring while the new champion escaped with his domestic crown, but once the significance of the defeat sinks in it's unlikely that Smith and his team will take the controversial judgement lying down.
Not only has he lost his spotless 24-fight unbeaten run in the paid ranks – but also his ranking as number one contender for the British title and with it his international profile.
“I can't believe it,” Smith said afterwards as he headed home without his belt and with half a dozen stitches in a cut over his right eye. “I know I didn't box well but I didn't even think the decision was close.”
It wasn't. Or, at least, it should not have been. Bendall had failed to make any real impact on the fight for the first eight rounds.
Smith, still some way off recreating the performances of earlier in his career, dominated from the centre of the ring and constantly pushed Bendall up against the ropes before chopping away with hooks and uppercuts.
The 34-year-old challenger wobbled three or four times in the first half of the fight as Smith teed off and it took an incredibly brave effort from him to simply survive the onslaught for 10 hard rounds.
On my card I gave Bendall the last two sessions, purely as Smith was tiring and the Midlander, roared on by a corner team screaming at him to go looking for a knockout, desperately swung away to try to turn the fight on its head.
However, experienced official Green awarded Bendall an outrageous 96-94 scoreline, which means that he scored only four of the 10 rounds in Smith's favour.
The fight was up close and personal from the opening bell and could have been staged in a phone box.
And while that made for some messy rounds and plenty of punching and holding, Smith was clearly in control.
Bendall's only role in the opening seven rounds was a brief rally in the third, and then just staying on his feet while taking some big shots to the head and body.
A hat-trick of overhand rights in the fourth round had the crowd gasping as Smith drove forward, while two neck snapping uppercuts in the fifth were followed by a neat left and right combination from which Bendall looked unlikely to recover.
By this stage Smith was flying and was having little trouble negotiating the challenger’s southpaw style. The fight wasn't pretty or vintage Paul Smith, but he was getting the job done.
Both started opening up more into the seventh as Bendall got desperate and Smith went in search of an eye-catching finish to mask his dogged display.
But again it was the champion’s haymakers that were catching the eye and even down the stretch, despite tiring, there was enough room to argue that Smith had done enough not to lose even one three-minute exchange.
Unfortunately, however, referee Green had other ideas – taking not only Smith’s belt but his world title ambitions too.

I bet Franks face was a picture!! It's mega-rare he has a decision go against him on his own show.
Smigga shouldn't get too downhearted on this though, it sounds like he put in a poor performance and still deserved the win (going by the consensus). I've just been looking through the British Middleweight rankings and it's very competitive*, so it ain't gonna be easy getting his #1 ranking back. A rematch with Bendall looks the best option for his next fight

Macklin v a rejuvenated Smith might be interesting.....
Depends how pally they are. Smith needs work, McGirt doesn't seem to have done too much for him.

He seems to have regressed under McGirt. His two performances prior to the Bendall fight (Francis Cheka & Cello Renda) were poor. He didn't look like the Smigga of old, he was just wading in with punches, then spending long periods covering up on the ropes.
If he wants to regain his no. 1 ranking, first thing he needs to do is hire a decent trainer. McGirt has been vastly overrated based on his work with Gatti.

Haven't seen this fight, but as Kevo states, his previous two fights left a lot to be desired - Smith looked like he had left a lot of his desire in the training camp in those fights.
Whether McGirt is to blame or not I don't know, but something hasn't been as it should with Smigga and for longer than last night's fight.

What trainer would be good for Smigga?
His strengths are agression, power and workrate, guys like Enzo or a Manchester based trainer might be good for him.
McGirt Is good for slicksters and Insanely wanted Gatti to box Mayweather.

Hate to say it, cause I don't rate him - but thought at least Pepe Correra had ALOT of faith in Smith.
I think that is a key ingredient - the coach has got to rate the fighter....

McGirt is overrated YES, but he did help Tarver beat Jones twice. I think it's all about the fighter's hunger, and "Smigga" is just one of those guys that thinks he is meant to win a title.
I remember when an amateur fighter sparred Smigga a few years ago at Hatton's gym when he was a no fight novice (and Paul was a professional) and did a number on him...I was there and I saw it. I knew then Smigga was average.

I have said before & don't wanna get on the band waggon but Smith is vastly overrated!!
Gets hit far too easy!!
Also aparrently i heard that in Liverpool he refused to help out Geard Ajetovic with sparring?????????
Seems strange considering he was going into a bout with a Southpaw & Geard would have provided good preparation???

I think that the Smith loss needs to be put into perspective. I am a fan of Smith, and believe in his ability. I feel he has the class to make it at least on a european level. However, i feel that his association with McGirt may not be working out. Smith is a puncher, an aggressive fighter, and it seems that McGirt has taken something away from Paul's natural instinct. To put this into persepective it is like telling a proffessional footballer who plays as a striker to play in goal, you know what is required, but it is not your strength, and you would not fit into this role if it is not what you are used to doing.
The point has been raised that maybe Paul needed this loss to wake him up and to change his style, and yes, to a certain extent you need to adapt in each fight to exploit an opponants weakness, and to capitalise on theirs. Maybe he did need the loss. Losing a fight does not automatically make you a bad fighter. How many champions have there been in the past who have stunk before? Lennox Lewis springs to mind, but as he grew in stature, the better he became. But the point is he was able to do this because to a large extent he was always allowed to box to his strengths, and this worked for him.
McGirt though has in a few previous interviews now said that they are working on changing Paul's style. I feel this is the wrong way to go, as clearly in the past Paul has thrived on aggressive styles.
Should he have lost to Bendall in terms of ability? No.
He lost because McGirt is trying to mould him into something he is not. And also by all accounts because of an abortion of a decision.
Maybe a change is required, and in this forum it has been suggested someone like enzo to look after him. If he was prepared to do this, i think it would be a cracking move. Enzo is a winner, and will let Smith know about it between rounds if he is not performing, and look at the champions his stable has produced.
I put money on Smigga to bounce back from this loss, but it think the only way to do this is to have a rematch with bendall, as i don't think he will be able to put this ghost to rest until he has beaten a man he knows he should have beaten. But he needs to be allowed to do it his own way, on his own terms, with his own natural instinct in a way this Smigga fans came to respect him for.

I like Smith - think he's top notch guy.
As I said after his last fight, I feel that McGirt has tried to change Smith's natural style. This can lead to some fighters being caught betwixt and between and looking less than what they are. I never thought that Smith would be a world beater but he had/has something about him that could lead to a title at Brit/Euro level.
As for McGirt - I am sure he saw something in the lad himself. With all the best intentions I think he tried to change Smith's natural instinct to get involved in a tear up - possibly thinking further down the line for him.
