Then how come Louis cruised to a decision against Jimmy Bivins, who had three times been knocked out by Archie Moore? How come Louis cruised to a decision against Omelio Agramonte, who had been knocked out by Jersey Joe Walcott? Oh, and how come Joe Louis showed up weighing "215 pounds" when two months earlier he had fought at 203?!?!?!

I gotta favour Louis, I think Marciano would eat a lot of clean shots coming in Louis accuracy, jab, hand speed and amazing combinations would be the difference.

In just a single bout, Marciano has one hell of a chance, the difference with Louis is, in return bouts he was absoloute death...in a series, Louis prevails, in a "once in a life time" bout....I lean toward Marciano, if Gudoy gave him trouble and he fought out of a crouch and big bangers like Galento and Baer shook Louis up...I can see Marciano doing an upset, but losing in the return.

at this class and punching power every result of two heavies is possible. had i to "pastdict" two fights i would go for narrow win on points by marciano in the first and a late ko in the second due to louis being forced to open up more.

That's what I think. Marciano wasn't hard to hit, Louis was an accurrate puncher. He is going to hit Marciano cleanly a lot. It's more than likely that he going to stop him.
There is a chance that Marciano could manage to got the distance.
Marciano wasn't an accurrate puncher. He going to get hit a lot more than he going to hit Louis. I don't see how Marciano is going win a decision. It's difficult imagining him winning 8 out of 15 rounds. He would have one in five chance to ko Louis in the later rounds.

Shorter arc on the punches of Louis really favours him, as does the potential TKO factor hanging aronud the face of Rocky. Good fight idea though.
Might have been done before but there should be a thread listing fights in which one guy was on the wane, or well past it, and we can then give thoughts on how the fighter would do if he was not on the wane.
Marciano showed great class in his win over Louis in my opinion. I'm getting into Rocky over the years, heart breaking fighter to box.
There are a handful of fighters who I think would give Marciano a go- Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Jack Johnson, Larry Holmes, Joe Frazier, Lenox Lewis, and George Foreman with the latter three being more of a stretch...

Foreman feasted on pressure fighters, Frazier and Chuvalo to name a few...What happens to Rocky when he comes in trying to drop his bombs?
And what if the refs allow George to push away his smaller opponent like he did Frazier?
I am not knocking Rocky... He was 49-0... But there was a favorable and unique confluence of circumstances that led to that record...Sonny Liston was on the horizon...What happens if he fought a Prime Liston?

"If", "If", "If"........
Marciano is the greatest.
Louis was beaten with knockout by "old" Shmelling. And knocked down by poor shampion Bradock and "boxer" Galento...
49-0 /43 KO/ /inc. Joe Louis/

And you couldn't really argue that there was anyone left after Marciano left the sport. There were dangers on the horizon but they were still on the horizon...

There were no dangers in view when Marciano retire.
Liston had just turn pro, had 13 bouts, and had not yet spend his jail time yet. Liston would only be a threat in 1958 or 59, by which time we are talking about a 37 or 38 year old Marciano. Swarmers dont last that long. Marciano's style was build for a short rein if he went on. This is nearly a 5 year gap. Thats like saying if Ali(If in good health) could have went on and fought Mike Tyson 5 years down the road. 5 years is too much of a gap imo.
Patterson had not yet pro himself(And I belive the Rock would have won had they fought in 56 or so), Also Cus was not in a hurry in matching Patterson with a monster like Rocky Marciano.
Ingo was in the same bout as Liston.
Than we have the Jackson's, Shatterfiled's ete. Who were getting used up by this time. There was no one when Marciano retire. And Liston was no were near the top of the heap.

This would have been a bigger version of LaMotta vs Robinson. Not exact but similar :P
