I think Foreman has been one of the best role models
and one of the most dominant fighters in the ring in
the last 40 years. To deny this is daft.

TheOneIsHere2008, if you're posting Monte Cox's list for anything other than humor, I'll just have a laugh.
Zac, you ever seen a photo of Monte?

OK, he's not quite in your league for sheer ugliness, but then who is?

:D
Who's Monte?

My uncle and I weren't that close but I always knew he was a boxer in the thirties... I also always knew he was blind in one eye from the ring...I googled his name and found him here...He used to own a bar on Lexington Avenue... Some of the old time fighters and other assorted athletes came in...

I googled Monte Cox...

He writes about boxing and is a mixed martial arts promoter...I'm not a fan of the latter at all...

Wasn't one of those links you put up showing rankings of Foreman a link to a Monte Cox article?

To answer your question, Monte is a joke.

You must be knocking on a bit mate if your uncle was a pro boxer in the thirties.

Monte Cox is a dude with a cool name.

Monte Cox promotes, matchmakes and manages
fighters in MMA. He also writes a bit about
both sports.

He's the last forty five year old heavyweight champ...That's for sure...And he only has been stopped once...

I'm not saying he's as good as Ali but I don't think it's far fetched to say he would have beat everybody Ali beat, Jimmy Young notwithstanding...Who did Ali beat Foreman couldn't have beat?

Liston? Patterson?, Terrell?, Bob Foster??, Frazier?, Norton?, Folley?, Moore?

True....

And in his campaigning he virtually did.

The trouble is Foreman, nor any boxer past,
present or future will have the pop legacy
that Ali had/has.

I figured out who Monte is...No, I typed in my uncle's name at this site under names and his name came up... I was kind of disappointed...He was 14-12-4 or something but I didn't expect him to be Max Baer...

I am in my forties...My uncle was a bit older than my dad...I admire anybody that gets in the ring for real...

Hey mate...

I dont know...I do recall a Monte Cox knocking about the
MMA scene back in the late 90s and early 00's. May not be...

He now promotes M-1. Could this be the same man as the
'boxing' Monte Cox ?

He may have a few feathers in his hat....

he manages fighters...that also fight in his promotion...
he also match makes for the fighters.....hrmmm :)

You read about him a bit on MMA forums. I dont
know if he is the boxing historian...

but its still a kinda cool name

Do you follow the MMA?

Not only has he put on weight............ he's got younger too!

It's two different people for my money. Monte the 'Historian' is/was a tool. He could never morph into Monte The Moneymaking Mogul of MMA.

Young and Quarry, for starters.

I don't think I got a private message...It seems a lot of threads here and everywhere on the net go off topic...At least I wasn't trading insults...

I respect Big Bad John...We just disagree...I might have used a bit of hyperbole about Big George but it doesn't strain credulity to suggest Foreman beats everybody Ali beats...After all he f'ing destroyed Ali's two greatest nemesises...

PEACE

I do not feel that Quarry beats Foreman. No sorry.

Young beat Foreman...but well not going to talk about
the Young-Ali fight.

That's not what Foreman thought. He has said in interview after interview that he absolutely didn't want to fight Jerry Quarry, no matter what.

That does not mean he could not beat him...

How do you see a Foreman-Quarry fight play out
in the Big Bad John boxing arena...

Zac, Foreman often says contrary things. He did say he wouldn't face Quarry but I believe he was just trying to build up the gate. The Ring took the bait and posted several articles along the lines of "Is Foreman Ducking Jerry Quarry?". Unfortunately for Foreman's bank balance, Frazier crushed Jerry in '74 before the fight could be made.

It means nothing, Zac.

(Damn, that mental image of your head makes it hard for me to commune with you without laughing - Do you get that sort of thing in real life?)

George said he was drugged in Zaire. Then he said he was ashamed for making that sort of ridiculous excuse. Recently was peddling the drugged in Zaire story again. He has a habit of saying things that he thinks will get him noticed. And as a man who lives off his fame, why not?

Look at Quarry's body of work...That will give you some suggestion of how Quarry would fare...He would fare rather poorly...He was a poor man's Joe Frazier and Joe Frazier owned Jerry Quarry and George Foreman owned Joe Frazier...

Quarry and Foreman had four common opponents-FrazierLyle, Chuvalo and Norton...Look how they did respectively

It wouldn't be like the two Ali fights where he got stopped on cuts...He would have got knocked out of the ring....

I must agree with your conclusion.

I think Quarry while fun to watch, sometimes gets
over rated. Having said that I am a big fan.

How do you say this nicely?

The Quarry brothers exhibited more courage than sound judgement...They both fought too long, with a style that invited punishment, against dangerous men, and paid the ultimate price...

It's the Peter Principle...A person rises to the level of his or her incompetence...The Quarry brothers were better than ninety five percent of their peers but the remaining five percent hurt them badly...
