i think its a great first fight, i think maskaev is a better man than rahman at moment. if maskaev lands a half decent shot the dream may well be all over for haye, its a huge gamble but will put haye right up there in the rankings and ready to be a mandatory challenger...
Slightly tentative from Haye, but very sensible. It should be a comfortable canter for him. However, should Maskaev land something meaty, his age and stamina might allow for a comeback from David. That's what you need in a novice fight; chances to make mistakes without a prohibitive price.
Imagine Khan in with Pacquiao. He'd shut-up shop. Courageous boxers are so rare these days, the last thing we should do is heckle them into taking a mauling for our entertainment. Then the Press would say 'Ah, he wasn't good enough. Another British failure bigging himself up.'
We see it in athletics all the time. Every whining sports journalist should be forced to partake in the events they cover come the Olympics.
I wonder what happens to Haye's contracts with Setanta and Golden Boy is he gets knocked out. Actually, I don't wonder. He'll get dropped like a grenade (at least from the US side). Hopefully he keeps on winning.
Maskaev is a nice idea. Let's see what comes of it. He is an upright European so Haye will probably go for the kill early. Haye needs a fight to test himself out at the weight.
Wouldn't mind seeing Haye fight a pressure fighter. Or some fairly squat, strong guy who comes forward. That style bothered Haye at cruiser, when he didn't have his full strength. I'd like to see how he copes at heavy.

Its an excellent fight for debut, and anyone who thinks differently should probably go and sit in a ditch rather than post on a boxing forum

A top 10 ranking In the WBC doesn't mean your good enough to still be top 10. Haye won't be backing up his horribly cringing trah talk either.
I think that clip detracts from your argument. I didn't see any evidence that Maskaev was shot. His is a well schooled boxer who went toe to toe with Samuel Peter, didn't dropped but got hurt more than he hurt Peter.
Oleg is a recent world champ and a legit top HW. He's a good opponent for the same reason i wanted Ibragimov. Everyone will be able to directly compare Haye's perfomance against Peter's (Wlad's) perfomance.

Fair enough. I didn't remember. Boxrec says it was for the WBC Intl title and full title eliminator. Still i was impressed with the pounding that Oleg gave Sam considering his previous years in the wilderness.
I'd guess Maskaev will come with plenty of ambition, especially if someone shows him a clip of Haye getting dropped by supermiddle Mock. He'll know he's one punch away from another half million or so, as a win over the golden boy will get him another shot no doubt.
This guy can punch - he knocked out Rahman, and his chin can't be that fragile, by HW standards, if Rahman couldn't beat him with two attempts - and we know Rahman hits hard.
Who knows, Haye might be in for a shock if his big shots don't have the same effect on heavweights. Though let's hope they do, for everyone's sake.
Be interesting to see the odds on this one, if it hopefully comes off.
This is no soft touch at all, and Haye could come unstuck. I do predict he will do an impressive job, but that has far more to do with Haye's talent and desire, rather than easy matchmaking.
It is so refreshing to see this attitude, maybe it is not all together sensible, but it may well make him one of the most popular fighters of the era.
As long as he doesn't get his head knocked off 1st!

But like it or not that is the current state of the heavyweight division. Who would you rather he stepped up against? Maskaev is still a lot more skilled than most, together with his still very good power. I can't believe you're not happy with this as a debut fight at the weight (actually I can but...) a fighter who up until one fight ago was WBC champion, it's not a bad start.
