My point is I watched this fight in a bar which played music rather than TV sound, and I thought it was a thoroughly decent performance by Wlad (I'm not a Klitschko fanboy, by the way; I was rooting for Thompson). No, he's never going to set pulses racing, but as somebody said, people often equate excitement with talent (and lack of excitement with lack of talent), which is not necessarily true or fair.

Thompson IS a good fighter, and his record bears this out. He made an excellent start and had the right gameplan, fast and aggressive and hitting Wlad in the clinches. Wlad looked uncomfortable against a man who could almost match him for height and reach. but Thompson tasted Wlad's power in the second and went into his shell a bit, but he - and we - were probably expecting Wlad to tire later. He didn't - he finished strong. He was also a damn sight more aggressive than in some recent fights (he actually threw a right hand in the first round!). So, his strategy was spot on, his stamina was improved, and he dealt with a highly-ranked contender in conclusive fashion. What more do you want?

Perhaps Thompson could have made more of a fist of it, considering what he did in round one worked very well, but then those who are questioning his resolve weren't getting rammed in the face repeatedly by 86-inch-long Terminator-like pistons of sinew.
That may well be true. Klit does what he does and does it pretty well, but he doesn't really have a plan B and looks one dimensianal.
On the other hand Thompson did have little head movement, and his resolve was certaintly broken by the Russian, leaving him to quit.
I think Klit is being judged at a higher level, he has won quite conclusively against the available contenders, but it is felt he is not in Lennox Lewis's class and perenial old time contenders like Tubbs, Dokes, Bonecrusher, Witherspoon etc would prob beat him too.
I actually agree with this and Bunce is right in saying that the contenders coming out of the U.S are relatively sub standard. However Bunce is very colourful in his speech, quite entertaining actually, but was prob a bit over the top(as usual) in driving his point home
Come on, let;'s not go over the top! Witherspoon maybe if he was actually training...but the others - Tubbs, Smith, Tate, Weaver, Coetzee, Dokes etc...no way

The fight was insulting to any viewer.

wlad is ruling over an extremely weak era.

i think povetkin beats him personally.

i think he has the punch picking and style to cause wlad serious problems.

wlad has adapted a bit better in recent years and knows not to come out to fast and shoot his load.

unfortunately that is making for more boring fights.

lennox lewis would have destroyed him in 2002, 2003.

and he'd come out of retirement now and knock him out.

You'll miss him when he's gone. Hard as it is to imagine now, remember people used to make sport out of bitching about Lennox.

Without Wlad, what is there? He's the only constant in the division.

sort of agree with that.

if u currently get rid of klitschko the division is horrible.

least klit has that punch and vulnerability to make u wanna watch. :TU:

Tell dem T Diddly!

I can not believe anyone thinks WK is good. He is just big - on a skills level he is a 6.

A fight with HAye eds i the 1st 3 rounds either way.... I say 60/40 Haye wins.

:D

There’s a lot in many people’s posts that I would agree with.

The fact is Vladimir is the best out there at the moment. Good or bad, that is the fact. It’s up to the contenders to show what this limited but effective fighter is. He is an awkward, noncommittal, nonstylist using his size and bulk with a great rammrod right hand at range, whilst sapping the strength out of his opponents when he gets up close with that limpet like holding – Cortez should have warned him last night but he got away with it because it is par for the course with HWs.

Personally, I begrudgingly respect the fact he is number 1, simply because there appears to be no one out there at the moment that can do a job on him, rise to the top and stay there. The HW scene is dire.

best fighter in the world? he's not even the best fighter in his family!!
i think the K era is drawing to a close. he is very limited, pov will probably beat him and haye certainly will. they did a great job on his eye.
he does some very good things, jabs well, but not all the time. for me he looks scared of taking a big shot. cant rough a man up (not unlike joe bugner i reckon, bugner was better at close quarters than wlad)

i really like him as a guy though and in fact both K's are top fellas.

poor opponent last night. no real heart but a very nice missus IMO.

At least Lennox showed more skill in his less exciting wins. And at least lennox has his share of absolutely concussive knockouts. When Lewis fought a big, intimidating guy, he'd go right afer 'em. Rather than panic, burn up loads of energy, jab, grab and turn your back on the opponent.

Wlad also has IBF and WBO titles, which may be the easiest to defend.

Wlad doesn't seem to possess chilling KO power.... thats part of the reason why he is so unexiting.

I nodded off in the fourth round, rallied to watch the fifth and then went to bed.

The case for the prosecution rests.

Wlad is dreadful. Partially effective, but poor. I hate getting on bandwagons, but Haye may well do him very early.

Thompson was credible but ponderous and lacked any fizz to expose the poor balance and enless opening Wlad offers. He always looks fragile to me to. Like the middle-class kid in the karate suit in a street fight. Yes you can do the crane, but Mr Myiagi cant help you now.
