Oh DG you'd be disqualifying the following:

Muhammed Ali - in most of his 70s fights
Jack Johnson - basically John Ruiz with a bit more skill
Jeffries - pretty much a wrestler

Actually most tall fighters clinch on the inside to take away the smaller opponents gravitational in fighting advantage

Well, we don't like those guys for the holding!

Do an article? as a long time subscriber of BOXING MONTHLY (1st edition to now!) its the right thing to do!

The first point of call is for all fans of the game to have a go at the sport at any level - not briefly but for a prolonged period of time. Then come back and give a decided opinion on how holding/clinching when hurt/not hurt should work. I bet you would be laughed out of town.

Not meaning to be patronising, but boxing at any level has always involved holding/clinching to one extent or another. We're just going through a rough patch with the HWs at the moment.

Nothing to do with HWs - they are the blue riband of the boxing world and it's disappointing at the moment. Hatton (your no1 bugbear) is/has become one of those type of fighters. It's up to the opposition to do something different/exceptional - PBF did and Hatton's legacy in pure boxing terms will be taken in perspective.

bring in the camera technology ffs.

but they won't cos there stuck in a timewarp at the FA.

tennis is the best example of technology changes.

The point I am making is....things change in other sports so why not Boxing?

Passing the ball back to the goalkeeper to pick u[p and run with when under pressure was part of football for 100 plus years, they changed that rule, didnlt they?

I understand the point you're making DG.

I don't think think boxing needs to a radical overhaul. The example you made about football was a relatively small one given the dynamic of that game. Besides it is perfectly well within the remit for a ref to deducts points for excessive holding within the sport as it stands. It's up to them to interpret and implement this.

I don't think think boxing needs to a radical overhaul. The example you made about football was a relatively small one given the dynamic of that game. I agree with your points!

Small thing can make a big difference, I think we all agree that something needs to be done to make the sport more fluid.

Its a thing of beauty when skills are on display.

I'd rather see boxers adopt a Ricardo Mayorga approach to the sport, it would be far more interesting than it already is.
That is the biggest problem with fighters these days, most of them are devoid of personality and just dreary bastards (both Klitschkos, Calzaghe, Pavlik, Cotto and many more) I'd rather see personalities like Mayorga, Mayweather, Judah, Haye etc.
