BOXING: The on-again, off-again Bernard Dunne challenge to European superbantamweight champion Rendell Munroe is off again, despite a €100,000 offer made to the English boxer's connections by Team Dunne, WRITES THOMAS MYLER.

Dunne's trainer Harry Hawkins has now accused Maloney of "running scared" of the Dublin boxer, who has 26 wins and one loss.

"We would like to thank Frank for his offer," he said. "However, our €100,000 offer for a defence in Ireland, more than double their one, would have been easily the biggest payday of Munroe's career. Clearly they are not as confident of beating Bernard."
Maloney said last night: "If they want a European title fight they should be coming to us -- we have the title."

The offer that was on the table from Brian Peters was actually Euros 40,000 so someone is lying or wants to get their name in the paper with outrageous claims but then the Irish are great at elaborating the truth in sport especially when they have been on the dark stuff.

I take offense to that remark. Please refrain yourself from blatant sterotyping less you want things to get ugly.

I also take offense to that remark, however with me things wont get anyways ugly, but what the hell are you on about??? Very stupid statement.

Just for the record the view expressed in that article are not mine its taken from the best selling newspaper in Ireland the Irish Independent on Wednesday, and just to state I was up off my seat cheering for Munroe when he beat Martinez, he's got a great personality and I really respect the guy as he combines working as a binman and being a European champion

I am quite shocked to read this, the Dunne team must be drinking the dark stuff, at no time has an offer of Euro's 100,000 appeared or been mentioned.

just to clear one other issue up when Munroe beat Martinez for the title that was a voluntary challenge and we paid the champion a lot more than Euros40,000 to come to Nottingham. We gambled and won.

His next defence against Bouaita was a mandatory defence so he has 9 months until his next mandatory so his last and next defence was and is a voluntary defence.

Can't you go back and say you'd accept EUR 100,000 if that's what they are offering? I don't see why Dunne can't just come over to fight Munroe here, provided RTE could still screen the fight. With the Irish contingent I'd expect to come across with him it would end up like a home fight anyway.

Rendall “No Show” Munroe was mysteriously absent from a press conference in Dublin yesterday which confirmed that he will be defending his European Super Bantamweight title in the city next month.

Munroe’s no show came after a weekend in which promoter Brian Peters upped his offer for the European Champion to defend his title in Dublin (against a real challenger – Bernard Dunne) to £60,000.

However instead of fighting Dunne in Dublin for real money Munroe and his promoter Frank Maloney have elected to defend in Dublin against obscure Italian, Fabrizio Trotter for what is likely to be chump change for the champion. Conveniently Munroe wasn’t in Dublin yesterday to discuss the offer but Maloney was only too happy to sidestep the issue on his behalf.

“Frank made his usual excuses about needing to see the offer in writing,” said Peters. “That’s the whole reason why I went public on this, my last offer of £40,000 was ignored by Frank other than to mumble some excuse about not wanting to fight in Dublin.

“Obviously with Rendall fighting in Dublin next month that no longer seems to be an issue so I’ve now increased the offer to £60,000 and we’re still getting excuses. I’m amazed to be frank as I was told by a few people that Rendall would jump at the chance to make some real money. He’s obviously either being held back or just doesn’t want to risk his title against Bernard.

“Either way it’s disappointing as a fight with Bernard would be a great occasion for Irish fight fans although I can’t see too many of them getting excited about Munroe defending his title against Trotter.”
