The Union between England and Scotland came into effect because the English had the best navy and the Scots (who had been historically aligned to France) had the best soldiers - both England and Scotland wanted a worldwide empire - they needed each other and came into union in 1701 (?)

Instead of being the opressed - the Scots did a good job of oppressing brown and yellow people worldwide whilst building the 'British' empire. Sure the English were bastards also but Scots played a very big part in the evils of the British empire and it is always overlooked.

The only mistake the English made was not going into a union with the Dutch - better looking women, they can speak better English than the Scots as a whole, better at football, and of course - Amsterdam!

I have a few things to say on this matter.

Being an Irishman, I have inherited the culture of cheering for English opposition in all sporting events. Now of course there are a lot of underlying issues where the roots of this lie, but as far as I'm concerned, I don't share any bitterness that many of my fellow countrymen have against the English any I treat it as no more than a friendly rivalry.

A lot of people believe that the Irish hate the English as much as any other country does. This is simply not the case. Ok, you could go to any pub to watch a sporting event where England are taking on the most remote of nations, yet the Irish will cheer for the opposition as though they are Irelands own national team. The sheer passion of the support would probably be a surprise to the average Englishman, but to me this appears to be nothing more than a harmless national past time.

I'm not sure what it's like in Scotland, but if you went into any of the same Irish pubs when Liverpool, Man U etc. are playing you would see a huge contradiction. The same people who cheered so passionately against England are now walking around in Liverpool and United jerseys, fiercely arguing with each other over the past achievements of each team. These same people regularly travel across the water to see their beloved team play. The only club team I have seen the get the same sort of hatred aimed at them that is usually restricted to an England national team, is actually from Scotland - and that is Rangers.

Bizarre behaviour really, but that's just the way the Irish people are. Obviously you'll always get those who will talk about years of oppression or the troubles in the North, but IMO what the Irish have is a love-hate relationship with the English.

Personally I think there are idiots in every nation, yet there are still certain characteristics that appear to be common in some nationalities. Being a resident of the UK for a few years even I can see the differences between the various people. No offence to any scousers here and even though I follow Liverpool FC myself, the Scouse people (obviously not all) I have found to be among the friendliest, but also the most dense bunch I have met over here. Not sure what the reason for that is (maybe it's the milk?).

When it comes down to it people like to form groups based on some form common ground. Sometimes this is at a national level, sometimes a lot lower such as different ends of the same town, same race etc. At the end of the day one needs to take each person as they come. My political views are generally right wing but I still have no difficulty in finding common ground with any nationality or race.

I once went to Ireland with a load of my Welsh mates to watch Ireland-Wales (in a Dublin pub) in the 5 or 6 nations. Before the game kicked off and throughout th day the Welsh were singing their songs, then the Welsh would sing their songs then every fcuker would join in for the anti-English songs I was gonna kick off, but I thought why lower myself

There is no song that stands a Scotmans hair on end like the Flower of Scotland does. The history between our nations is at the heart of our dislike and it would be foolish to discount that.

However, those days are gone now and in the past they must remain! Present day hatred towards English by the Scots COULD be: (in no particular order)

Your/Our sporting commentry:
*) Your shower o' shite football team that you hype beyond all rational
*) Your Olympians get the majority of attention during the Olympics
Your royal family

I'm English and I love Scotland and the Scots people.

I went to Clydebank with Francis Jones a couple yr ago when he boxed Craig Dickson and Francis' reception went something along the lines of " slot the English b*st*rd" and "kill the English b*st*rd", and other variations on the same theme. It was a very hearty rendition indeed, and not just directed at the boxer, myself and our girlfriends got a bit of it too.
Skip to Dublin 18 months later for Neil Sinclair and I have to say there was no such vitriol to be had - in fact a few Irish lads were really keen to have a chat and wish him luck against Kevin Anderson.
I have seen several boxers come down this side of the border from up North but I haven't seen any of them get a reception like Francis got in Clydebank, which isn't to say it hasn't gone on let me make that clear.
Likewise Francis has been to Scotland on two prior occasions to box without much of a to-do made by the locals.
So this is probably as irrelevant as 60% of the rest of the thread.........however it's a blinding little lead up to Welterweight Prizefighter.......look out for Dickson and Sinclair.......I think both are in with a real shout.

It's certainly debatable, although 'The Calamitous One' was the best keeper in the Prem last year IMO
