Well contrary to what Bert Sugar and everyone else would like to believe, Charles is not by any means a great heavyweight.
Just had to get that off my chest.
Maybe he should be on this list vs. Michael Spinks(greatest lightheavyweight of all time) at heavyweight.

So throwing a fight and not defending your title for 3 years
puts one above a guy that was an olympic gold medalist,
a MW, the youngest HW champion ever, first two time
champion....simple because the later had some 'easy' protected title defences...

Indeed Michael Pinks and Floyd Patterson should be there somewhere, maybe even against each other...
Fair enough, i'll do it.
Michael Spinks V Floyd Patterson
Michael Spinks wins UD .
Michael Spinks was quite crafty and manage to edge out winning rounds smartly, Floyd Patterson would win some rounds, but ultimatley, Spinks would win in a close uD.

Accomplishments aren't being compared here, as DempseyFire already alluded to. I just don't see Patterson defeating Dempsey, straight-up. Dempsey beat bigger punchers, & found more elusive boxers. He would KO Patterson, ten from ten, IMO, & in my own personal (lofty) estimation of Dempsey, that's no knock on Patterson (who I also rate higher than most).
I'll take Patterson over Spinks at Heavyweight any day of the week, for the record

I'll take Dempsey's accomplishments over Floyds anyday as well.
Dempsey cleaned out the division pre-title (save Willis) and his title defenses (Miske, Brennan, Gibbons, Firpo, Carpentier) were better than the likes of Harris, Rademacher, Jackson, McNeely, London . .

...re: the absence of ezzard charles on this list....nowhere in my post did i say ezzard was a great heavywieght. maybe i think so and maybe i don't, wich has nothing to do with my wondering about his absence. i just listed a few heavyweights who ARE on the list....and i find ezzard not being there when those guys ARE a puzzlement.
(roland lastarza???)
