A week earlier, in a proper international standard venue (NIA) the UFC, for £25 a ticket, are giving fans 11 fights and they all are, at most, 60/40 fights:

Barry Hearn is right to be worried - domestic promoters just arent rising to the challenge at the moment. SN are resting on their laurels feeding us Brummies this 5hit card. They are relying on the fact that Macklin, Broadhurst and Costello (to a lesser degree) will sell loads of tickets because it is a novalty them fighting in their home town.

But long term will this dismissive attitude of fans help the sport grow?

ha ha ha fair one but as i said i post on here as a fan not a boxer and although the opposition may have been alright fighting there own standard it was a pointless exercise them contests taking place(espescially on sky t.v) if the away corner were fighting some of there own standard no matter how poor they were it would have made better viewing then the mismatches that took place take prizefighter for instance hardly any fight(sorry show) has captured the imagination of the public as much as this for ages and one of the best fights so far on it involved yours truly v dave ferguson not because were brilliant(far from it infact) but because of the fact that it was well matched and we both wanted to win when talking about the fight they dont mention that we both couldnt lace a top tenners boots i was fat he was unfit and why was that? because they were too interested in watching a good even even fight where both boxers gave there all so sky should take notice of fights like that and demand more even fights to keep the paying public happy it doesnt matter so much for fwank now because his time seems to be ending(espescially if bills continue to be as bad as this but the likes of hennesy e.t.c who are coming through will not be able to get the public back if this continues you have to have at least 3 decent match ups on sky bills and its just not happening on most bills

Not if the TV companies refuse to pay for poor matches. Perhaps Sky thought that the Commonwealth was some guarantee of quality. Understandable but as it turns out, absolutely wrong. I was told by Sky that they weren't minded to enter into long-term agreements with promoters anymore NOR put up with shite cards. Wrong on both counts, it seems.

It actually grates a little worst than the WBU situation... cause at least most of the people in boxing and the big fans (even the small fans) would just say "bollocks" and almost laugh it off, even though it is no laughing matter.... now a pretty prestigious belt, with some history, is being treated with contempt.

The WBU/IBO had no history and sometimes no champion - so when a Vacant title would just miraculously appear you couldn't really argue - now though underserving fighters (who are the favourite!) are fighting for it and their champions are just being told to vacate - it really just sucks.

I have no real problems with Cleveley vs Oakey. Oakey has been a champion and at least one of the fighters was legitimately scheduled to fight for the title against the champion on that day. But Burns vs Akaba and even worst Don Broadhurst (who isn't ready to fight for a title) against TBC!!!! we know the title will be on the line, but we don't even know the opponent! Its rediculous.

If Warren used the English/Celtic titles - which have topped TV bills in the past - then I wouldn't be half as pissed off.

Stu you are spot on. I have been following boxing since I was about 9 or 10 and rarely miss any bills on TV but the Burns fight was that poor a match up i didnt even both to watch and i was actually at home!
I heard the york hall looked empty that night, dont know if true thats pretty embarrasing because the york hall is usually always at least 90% full. I guess the york hall crowd are too knowledgable to go to them type of bills.

26 I have had it confirmed that Macklin is fit and ready to fight the fearsome TBA on the 31st so that is something at least - the headline fight might still be a pathetic joke but at least the local lads will get a run out even if it is in marking time fights. What is Dean Powell doing that means he cant announce the opponents less than 2 weeks from the first bell? I know the general lack of sun means more time on the sun beds than usual, but this is taking the mickey!
