He is one of the nicest blokes you could ever wish to meet. I seem to remember that he was asked to box for England after only his fifth amateur bout and gave a good account of himself when he stepped up a level against Kofi Jantuah, and gave him a run for his money before getting stopped in the 11th (I think). He dismantled Spencer Fearon and I think he was stopped a bit prematurely against Gary Woolcombe. It's a shame it's come to this and I hope he really does make a speedy recovery.

I feel totally compelled to reply to Spencer Fearon's piece on Setanta Sports.
I can absolutely categorically state 100% of the boxing family is behind "Gilly" in his biggest fight of his life, whether it be the boxing fan or those who work within the sport or boxers themselves feel totally and utterly gutted what has happened - every single person wants and prays for both Gilly and his family.
A message to you Spencer - your words are well put and I am positive those that can visit Gilly will do so - those that can't feel helpless and the only way they can voice their support is putting their words on this forum or as you point out on places like facebook - unfortunately I am one of those people who lives in the North East and trust me if I could afford or get off work to visit Gilly I would do so - I feel totally helpless as I am positive many others do that they cannot do more.
Already on Facebook there is talk of some sort of benefit evening which Gilly could attend when he has recovered from his latest battle - I would be totally stunned if the "Boxing Family" did not pull together when the time is right.

I actually always considered Gilbert was more talented than Howard in their primes.

nice piece from spud there, im sure spencer is concerned about a lack of visitors but believe you me, its a hard thing to do, people are not sure if things will have deteriorated when they get there, people have phobias about hospitals, people will feel that when gilbert is on the road to recovery then its the right time to visit, people will be worried that relatives will be 'angry'...etc etc
all in all, the whole of the boxing world is behind gilbert, we all work for a living to put food on the table, its impossible to get a whole day off to visit london.
i urge those of you in the capital to make an effort to visit gilbert, patients in comas can sometimes respond to voices and can sometimes hear (all depends on the level of sedation in relation to the boxers clinical condition)
if you are elsewhere in the country, or busy working...or anything. then i consider a text, facebook/myspace message to be a nice gesture, nothing wrong with one of gilberts nearest and dearest reading them out !!
come on gilly, you can do it !!!

You make very good points, its a family matter until he picks up, then he and the family will appreciate visitors. In the meantime the power of prayer is the best option for friends and fans. Gilbert and his family will also appreciate all the messages posted here and on facebook etc so everyone is doing their bit.

On Friday night my mate Johnny Nelson was working at York Hall.
He went down there on a high, because the following night was his testamonial dinner in Sheffield.
He was getting up early Saturday to get back.
When we all got the news in the early hours of Saturday the mood changed considerably from elation to disbelieving and utter concern.
I can tell you all, and Gilly when he's well enough, the boxing community up here in Sheffield is all with him in spirit in his toughest battle so far.
The news that he's out of the coma is brilliant, and God willing each day will bring a little more good news on the road to a full recovery.
Saturday night was about celebrating Johnny's career, but throughout all of our thoughts were with Gilly and his family.

More good news, Spencer Fearon went to see him last night and told me this morning that he was talking to him and laughing at his jokes....Nurses are trying to stop him from talking !!!
His speech is a little slow but it will be, hes only just come out of a coma....Word is he will make a full recovery and was very proud to show Spencer that he could move his legs and arms with no bother at all..

semi true.....but lady luck plays a huge part in this. its all about prompt accurate surgery too, the advancement of hospital scanning devices has been a massive leap forward.
