yeah, just imagine, not being really interested in a fight so one-sided that one 'combatant' clearly forfeits any chance of winning after the 2nd round, as many people predicted would be the case. imagine not being interested in a one-sided parade less competitive than sparring sessions many of us will have seen.

god KG what a strange lot we are, perversely wishing to see competitive fights, we make a mockery of boxing fans eh?

still at least we are lucky enough to have you around to remind us of the the error of our ways. are you looking forward to a Hopkins- Jones rematch then?

Maglianaggi - Hatton isnt a competitive fight?

Blimey
It shoudnt be, and wouldnt have been when the fight was announced. I thought it was a mis match at the time. A lot has happened since then and its only when we see the fight that we will get to find out if Hatton can still do the business. Personally I cant see Hatton winning convincingly with a mid rounds stoppage. Is Lazcano better than Malignaggi? if he isnt then the fight could go all the way. Ok if Hatton wins say 117-112 average, no problem really.

You are right he isnt great, but hes fast, awkward and tough. I think the haircuts sapped his strength in his last fight though.   Seriously, I did think the fight with Hatton was a mismatch when the fight was announced but now I dont think it is. So much has changed since then. No Billy Graham or Kerry Kayes, changing his trainer and his style so late in his career, not to mention still eating and drinking heavily, it has to make a difference.

I've picked Hatton on points for this coming weekend, but not with any confidence. If anyone's getting stopped in this one, it's Hatton. No way does Hatton hit as hard as Cotto, so, unless that beating has had a lasting effect, Malignaggi hears the final bell. He was floored in the second round of that fight and suffered a fractured cheek bone, but showed tremendous heart and remained fairly competitive throughout.

Even though he's not a puncher, I could see Paulie stopping Hatton late if Hatton's stamina lets him down again. Hopefully that won't be the case, as he's been training at altitude, but Hatton's conditioning will undoubtedly be the determining factor in the outcome. Once he tires, his punch resistance decreases dramatically and even Paulie's relatively innocuous shots could be enough to send Ricky into retirement. I will remain optimistic, though, and stick with my prediction of a fairly close, but clear UD for The Hitman.

David,

Lets hope you are right - British Boxing in my view needs the likes of Calzaghe, Hatton, Haye and Froch too keep on winning - if they do not the transition to those coming through the ranks to hopefully hit the world ranks is going to be vast - seriously if the above mentioned fall away who else do we have ready to step into their shoes now??

But back to Hatton - you have forgotten a couple of factors in your summing up of Hatton - firstly and I believe it is the most important one - the "Kerry Kayes" factor - without him doing all but wipe Hatton's arse for him I honestly believe Hatton will not be the same fighter.

Couple that with Hatton clearly not liking "fancy dan" fighters who box and run and who also have the necessary footwork to steal the fight with a few pitter patter jabs here and there - I honestly think Hatton has a whole lot of problems coming his way!!!

Then I suppose you could add in another factor - what is Hattons punch resistance like? - Collazo fight was alarming, Mayweather fight speaks for itself and then you have the Lazcano fight where Hatton was clearly buzzed in something like the 8th round by a fighter who was a Golden Boy fighter and was there for the pay day. Okay Malanaggi cannot punch but I dont think he will need to, to have Hatton in trouble.

You then have how harder a punch does Hatton have - he has bullied the majority of his fighters by the volume of punches - not by single concusive punchers.

The final point - is the change of trainer so late in the day of Hattons career - okay a fresh face in a lot of ways may do him some good - but to tell anyone who will listen to him that there has been quite a few changes for me is not the right thing for a fighter who reached world level by using tried and tested methods - iHatton should have changed one thing many years ago and now I feel it is too late and that is his lifestyle outside of the ring!!!!!

The final big factor and it is perhaps the biggest in my thoughts that Malalanaggi could possibly steal and I mean steal this fight by his hit and run tactics is how much did Cotto take out of Malanaggi?? was his last fight against Ndou mearly a blip because he knew the Hatton fight was already made so he took the foot off the gas and thought of the healthy pay day against Hatton rather than think of the fight at the time with Ndou.

Overall - I think Hatton's lifestyle has finally caught up with him - I think Malanaggi still has a big fight left in him and I honestly think Malanaggi will furstrate the life out of Hatton by running all night - Hatton I believe does not have the stamina to run after a man who will not stand in front of him and fight - the more the rounds go on the more frustrated he will become and that will lead to mistakes and enable Malanaggi to stand and trade by then Hatton will be knackered and this could heavily influence the judges to give the fight to Malanaggi.

Bloody hell I am exhausted after writing all that.
Funny how you never said any of this when you were "associated" with the Hatton camp, isnt it?

I still think Hatton will win... Convincingly.

It's what I was trying to say earlier, whenever Hatton does beat an opponent, bxoing "pundits" downply the victory...

When he moved up weight to fight Luis Collazo (and try to gain more recognition in the US)... They ciriticised himj, saying he was not the same fighter at Welterweight...
(despite 3 judges scored it 119- 109)

And they said, that all the "greats" could fight to a high standard at multiple weights...

AND, I've heard people say that Tsyzu was "past it" when he defended his title against Ricky.

And that is not to mention the fact that they said Lazcano wasn't the same that he was... And his loss to Harris proved that!!! :(

Even if Hatton KOs Malignaggi in round one... And beats him conclusively, people will say that "Cotto beat him first"...

A Hatton/Cotto confrontation is a MUST for 2009... :TU:

But if Ricky does win (and I think he will :TU: )... Let's not be too quick to discredit him, eh guys? :D

Crease, Hatton outpointed Collazo by scores of 115-112, 115-112, 114-113 in a fight many thought him fortunate to win. I think he beat Juan Urango by margins of 119-109. I take your point about the "pundits" being over-critical, but Ricky's not exactly a novice any more. He's a superstar earning multi-million dollar paydays every fight, so I think high expectations of his performance are justified.

Hatton all the way, Malignaggi is a smaller worse version of Collazo. Plus Paulie arguably lost 2 of his lost 3 and is stepping up in class. Lets not pretend Paulie is a master boxer or super slick, he isn't. I see it going Hatton 8-4 or 9-3 in a semi-competitive fight

Great headline that!

The Hatton who fought Tyszu would have torn Mailgnaggi up, busted him up to baloon like proportions.......... but that Hatton is long gone and its a guessing game now as to just how much Hatton has left. This fight is not cut and dried, Malignaggi has a shout at sneaking a points win if Hatton is poor on the night. He's not going to score a KO, thats just silly talk!

The Collazo fight was very close, I had Hatton a round or two behind, so a draw wouldnt have been a surprise, but Hatton winning it was. I think he was very lucky that night to get the decision. Yes you are right, we do have high expectations from sports superstars. Its like when grossly overpaid footballers not only miss an open net when right in front of it, but send the ball high up into the terraces. You dont expect somebody who earns more in a week than you do in a year to be performing like a Sunday league player.

I think you are right Hattons clock has high mileage on it. Had he kept fit and done a bit of light training like Carl Froch between fights, his engine might have still been firing on all four cylinders. 57 pints on a four day binge is hardly good for anyone, never mind a world class athlete, not to mention Carol Hattons big greasy breakfasts. "Here you are Richard get that down you" "Thanks Mam, wheres me pint of tea" followed by a workout on his X Box, before going down to the pub for a glass or two or three or.....................

Some may argue that Ricky will benefit from not doing all the heavy weights that he did with Kayes, this fight may help us see if hatton is looser and more free flowing with his punches compared to the labouring powerhouse he has become since kostya, which a lot of people put down to the extra weights

Some fighters grow old overnight and Hatton's lifestle hasn't helped him, but he hasn't had too many gruelling bouts, and nothing he has done in the ring yet suggest to me his engine or punch resistance is faulty

The arguement is not how you saw him in the ring before but how will he perform now with all the changes. Thats what we all need to see, and what Hatton himself needs to find out. He admits he doesnt have the same confidence anymore. He says he doesnt want to get hit charging in to get his body punches off. Is Hattons mind still a winning one? We cant judge him from past performances, we need to see him in action again, to decide. Kayes and Graham were always there by his side, I think it must be pretty lonely training up on that freezing bloody mountain early in the morning.

The point was raised on another thread about mindset in relation to punch resistance.
I think if Ricky does have any issues it is more likely to do with confidence in his camp and his own ability rather than physical deteriation

It is going to be something similar to when Jim McDonnell stopped Barry McGuigan
and retired him.

Maggiliani will be to fresh, fit and mobile and will outbox Hatton - he could stop him on cuts but I think he will beat Hatton on points and Ricky will finally retire.

I cant really judge how well Ricky might be able to adapt as a fighter, particularly at this stage in his career - but I am a bit doubtful that he can do it successfully.

Against lesser fighters, the walking into flurries just to get close worked a treat, specially when he was physically bigger than his opponents. But against Floyd it was a recipe for disaster. Those long, accurate arms hitting him in the face each time. Easy to see why Ricky got frustrated and riled, although shit for brains Joe Cortez certainly didn't do him any favours.

Ricky has the heart of a lion and this fight will probably go the distance, but it could end up being a bit of a long night. We shall see.

Just read this quote form Mayweather Snr, actually...
'I gotta say, he's one who learns quick. I can tell him somethin' in the ring, he go right out there and do it. Perfect. Just like that. Sometimes you gotta show a fighter somethin' two or three times. Ricky? Once. He does it, he goes right there.'
So maybe he can change quite a bit and with some success?

I think you are referring to my post, in which I wrote that Hatton could be stopped. I did not say he would or could be knocked out by Malignaggi who has only 5 stoppages in 25 wins. Paulie's punches will probably bounce off Hatton's chin for the most part. If, however, Hatton tires badly (which he has been known to do), his punch resistance drops alarmingly and a still-fresh Malignaggi could force a ref or corner stoppage. That's not silly talk, it's fact. This is all about Hatton's conditioning.

I don't quite know what the big deal is with Malignaggi - he does get caught, can be hurt, lacks any power and has very weak hands. Hatton will hustle him to a pretty wide decision and he does have the ability to close the ring down, something Paulie won't like.

Re: The Last Stand of Ricky Hatton

I agree with what you say Dioufy and I think 12 months ago I'd be certain for Hatton to stop him or win a dominant UD, but the interesting thing about this fight is the question marks over Ricky. He doesn't sound as sure of himself in interviews nowadays, and the fact that he didn't really put in a very good performance in the homecoming fight and is now expected to fight in a different way by Mayweather Snr must bring little doubts into his mind.

I hope we see a slicker Ricky Hatton who makes a mockery of all the doubters, but I also fear that the damage that Mayweather did to him pyschologically and perhaps even physically will mean that a fight that Hatton would have won easily a year ago may become really hard work for him in later rounds unless he slows Paulie down early.

Really tough fight to predict, but think I'm going to go for a Hatton close decision in the fight prediction thread on Current Scene. Interestingly the majority of folk have gone for a Paulie win :oo

Am I in the minority that thought Ricky gave a good performance against Lazcano? For me, he won every round and although he got tagged once or twice he never really looked in too much trouble, or on the verge of being stopped (like some idiots proclaim).
