Anyone get the feeling that Haye's been set up here? He chases Wlad for so long....Wlad's schedule becomes free as he doesn't have to fight Povetkin until Septemeber, so a fight between them is a goer...only for big brother Vitali to step in and say he wants the fight with Haye, so Wlad looks elsewhere and is now deep in talks with Arreola.

Then low and behold...Vitali pulls out due to mandatory obligation (which he knew about before speaking to Haye) so the Klits appear to have legitimate reasons for not fighting Haye and Haye is left without a Klitschko and and a world title shot...that's boxing!

(unless Haye was in on it himself...which I may not rule out entirely)

Oleg Maskaev would be a good opponent.

Well, he did have a large Liverpool venue booked for March... I wondered all along if he was going to top that bill himself.

I think Haye is involved in whatever is going on.

For who, Derek Chisora?

No silly. David Haye.

Holyfield fought James Tillis, Pinklon Thomas, Michael Dokes, Adilson Rodrigues, Alex Stewart and some fella called McDonagh before getting the fight with Douglas for the heavyweight title.

Oleg Maskaev is a recent holder of the WBC belt Haye wants, packs a clump and has beaten - a million years ago, some decent opponents.

I believe he's still ranked by the WBC in their top 10.

Derek Chisora, ooh you are a card.

Oleg Maskaev would be a step backwards in my opinion, Haye has never been a fighter for doing that, if he does have to have another non championship fight I wouldn't be surprised to see him go after Povetkin or Arreola

Hagler, I don't think you're taking in what you're reading.

Arreola is deep in talks with Wladimir hence Wladimir's unavailability.
Povetkin is Wladimir's injured mandatory.
Gomez is Vitali's mandatory. And perhaps, for once, the WBC are not to be pushed on this one.

Maskaev or Peter would be my bets, neither will prepare Haye for the brothers grim but they are both WBC fodder, who stand motionless and get hit with enough risk attached, highlight reels to keep Haye earnest.

Sorry I wasn't aware of the unavailability of Aerrola & Povetkin, maybe John Ruiz would be an option, as I said before Maskaev would be a step backwards, look what Sam Peter done to him.

Ah yes but he'd be cheap and has precious few other options as a recycled nigh on 40 year old.

John Ruiz wouldn't come to England for chump change either, he could fight in Germany and earn more against their up and comers I suspect.

Evander Holyfield could still be sold. No, shut up, he could. Clash of the ages etc. Muppets would buy tickets to see Holyfield.

Haye v Holyfield: Clash of the Ages.

Yep, I can see it now.

He should try and get Valuev if he's available, if not then any top 10 heavy would do, maybe even get the euro title. Anythings better than sitting on your arse waiting for the big fights to come along.

Interestingly enough, months and months ago, on 'A Question Of Sport' Haye said that he would fighting Sam Peter in March 2009. I didn't really think much of it, but maybe that's what will happen and was the plan all along.

I will be very disappointed if haye - vitali does not come off after the "announcement" that it was on. It was a fight that really captured everyones attention, surely they should have waited until it was signed before getting everyones hopes up.

Haye wont be as motivated for his next fight if it is Vitali or Wlad, the only fight I see him being interested in is Valuev who is very beatable

Valuev was good in that 300 though wasn't he. Once he got the chains off.

Valuev will probably have to face Holyfield again if Chagaev goes ahead with his February fight.

I don't think he was set up. I believe Vitali would love to knock Haye out, easy win over a top fighter who's far too small.

Vitali may have felt the WBC would give him a pass on the Gomez mandatory. That's my view.

Whatever the truth is, and while I'm glad Haye is willing to take risks, Haye isn't ready for Klitchko. It seemed ridiculously beyond his abilities, the Vitali fight. I think Haye knows how to ready himself for a world title - do what he did at cruiserweight, take the "building" fights. Do what Holyfield did, be busy, fight contenders, build up to the title shot. Vitali won't be around much longer.

Anyway, when Vitali gets by Gomez - a fight I wouldn't mind seeing - he won't have another mandatory for a while. So maybe later in the year, if Vitali and Haye HAVE TO do it.

Ruiz wouldn't come over for £30 a day and a moderate purse??

Get over yourself, Auto.
Ask Banks why he didn't come.
Shooting at the wrong Promotor.
All that sounding off by Barrett was for the cameras and press.
The purse and expenses didn't stop him coming. Every boxer has his price.
Lets wait and see if he's attracted over - if indeed he's remotely on anyone's list.

Haye / Vitali in June always seemed an non starter - the WBC were never going to grant Vitali yet another big favour by giving his mandatory a miss, after giving him a straight shot at his old title.

Plus why would Haye want Vitali, a fight he'd be a massive underdog in? Wlad is much the better bet, and he's got a real punchers chance in that one.

No surprise Wlad wants to batter the the crowd pulling Arreola ASAP - before someone else gets there first. A nice easy fight, then maybe DH in late 09.

Staying busy in the land of the giants seems too risky for Haye, one nice careful fight in the summer should do it. Against a faded name he can get out of there quick - Rahman maybe.

Spot on :TU:
No it isn't.

This is a classic case of promoters talking up a 'fight' that was never going to happen right now.

And you all fell for it.

Fair play though, it will make it bigger if it does go ahead.
Why was it never going to happen?

Both men seemed to want the fight and considering they are both self prmoted there was nothing in the way of it happening. All Vitali had to do is get rid of a belt which doesn't mean much anyway and make the more interesting fight.

Doesn't the winner have to face Maskaev this year?
