Oh man Hakim came through a very tough bracket. His gym-mate knocked off Roscoe Hill, but he still had to beat 3 tough opponents. Was easily the area's deepest and toughest weight class. Hakim was runner up at 141 last year to Zavier Combs (Zaybo) who couldnt compete this year. Hakim is bean-pole thin, but with good frame and arms, good reach and has some pop.

Miguel was on his way to a very impressive win in my eyes. Eric had already been deducted a point for holding, which he was doing more every round. The DQ was not a good call - Eric should had been DQ for holding-he was warned about a hundred times. Miguel fought a very good fight and broke him down. I feel for Bobby and Erin.

We shall see.. I dont think they will have the box-off, and I'm certain this issue is far from resolved..

And Larry is correct, EVERYONE in the arena saw Miguel had won, including Eric's coach, and all 5 scorecards..
Eric could have been DQ'd for holding excessively, he was just trying to survive and had abandoned scoring early in the 3rd round.

Technically, the blow landed to the back of the head after the bell, so the referee may have interpreted it correctly, giving him the benefit of the doubt..
However, with two rings, there are confusing/conflicting sounds and signals throughout the tournament. Fighters, referees, and cornermen reacted to the wrong signals on many many occasions. Fighters engaged in an exchange at the bell happened numerous times and the referee just stepped in and stopped the action a second after the bell. This seems to have been accepted as part of the problem with having two rings in action. Never was a fighter deducted a point, or even warned, much less DQ'd. So, for it to happen in the finals, I think was the wrong call. But ultimately it is the referee's decision, and he is our most experienced and highly qualified ref. As well, Flores' team has the right to file a grievance and have the decision reviewed. We will see who makes the final call and how it plays out..

Multiple rings are the norm at bigger tournaments, how is this situation often handled?

i hear y'all talking about Eric and Miguel that wasn't the only match that was rob. what about Richard Hernandez and Daniel ybarra .that fight was rob too!! how come every fight he has fought him Richard has won. now were in Daniel's home town and rich loses the match .we will put it like this from the every beginning one of the LBC :shame: judges came to them and asked them what ring side they were in. when they replied they said "ring 1 why?" .all he did was shook his head and said "there is no way your going to win unless you do a KO or maybe change the judges if they allow you to" we asked the judges they said no!! so when they meet up with him again he asked what happen they replied they said "no".he said because they already have their favorites who is going to win.and that is not fair i think that is why every thing was so screwed up those days.why can't they play fair .OK if he lost take it as a lost .and it shouldn't be because your coach is your president of L B C gulf .it should be about the best of the best no matter what :shame: :shame:

It was the first time I'd seen either of them fight as fighters usually dont match up at that weight class.
I thought Hernandez was winning the bout, but it was a close fight, and I was a little bit surprised when Ybarra's hand was raised.
Ybarra is from Bayou City boxing club which is coached by Walt Hailey who is also head of the Gulf boxing association.
ALL of the final open bouts were in ring 1, and they used 5 judges, and selected the most experienced referees and judges for that ring. They do not call out the individual judges decision nor did I see the scorecards, so I do not know how narrowly it was scored.

Eric will be going to state. The rules specifically say that they cannot overturn a referee's decision unless the protesting party can prove some malicious intent...

Thats a bummer considering the way the fight played out :shame:
The deserving fighter isnt even going
but other than the DQ the two questionable decisions I can think of was Eric Fowler - Darryl Hayes and
Damazo Tello vs Rogelio De La Torres in the championship
In my eyes Hayes fought a great fight. I dont know why but it seems to me Eric Fowler is one of the local favs among the judges or something because he seems to be on the generous end of decisions.
The 152 fight I thought Rogelio won as well.
I wasn't able to see the mentioned 106# fight, so I can't comment on that one.
The Flores-Manriquez fight beats them all though. That's just ridiculuous the best or more deserving fighter isn't getting to advance. On top of that, Flores won't be able to fight the US Championships because he's not a citizen. They took a great opportunity away from him.
Having said all this I do believe the gulf officiating is getting slightly better than years ago.

edit: oh i almost forgot, robert sherman looked good and definitely deserving of the oustanding fighter award,
also hakim bryant deserves honorable mention he won a packed division and is probably the hardest worker on the team

I'm told that Juan Leija, who competed in the Olympic Trials, but missed our local GG due to injury, will be representing SE TX at the TX state GG tournament at 112 lbs. There were no entrants in that division during the tournament.

Also, there is still some debate locally about who should go to Ft.Worth at 119 lbs, as of right now, I think it will still be E.Manriquez.
