Irrespective of weight, if Hatton beats the current number 1 and 2 and in doing so beats the pound for pound number 1 in consecutive fights I don’t think you can really argue anyone else should be above him but that’s a pretty big if.

I do think Hatton's relative lack of success a mere half-stone up is strange, but I don't begrudge him pound-for-pound consideration for mostly staying in one division. Frequent weight-hopping is a fairly recent phemonenon in boxing. Yes, there have been exceptions through history but typically boxers have stayed in one or two divisions, especially in their prime years. Who you fight, and for long you are successful, are more important than at how many weights you do it at, IMO. If Hatton beats Pacquaio, then he's P4P #2 at worst, and you could argue #1 based on the Marquez-Pacquiao results (opinions differ but only results count).

my take on the situation is that, whilst beating pacman would be a great accomplishment, hes shown hes not prepared ( or able ) to do what pacquiao and marquez themselves have shown a willingness to do: rise through the divisions, not for the sake of it, but to chase the big fights. what was he going to do if manny didnt move up and beat odlh? go for the big fights at welter, or stayed and faced the uninspiring crop of challengers at 140?

even if he beat pacman, you could argue pac was still higher than hatton p4p, because i cant see any scenario where hatton wins without using his big advantages in size and strength, advantages afforded him by taking on the smaller challenger.

and whilst i agree that hatton shouldnt be lambasted for fighting in a divsion hes simply not effective in, at the end of the day it is his ability that prevents him doing so, its his own style that limits him. great light welter, but pacquiao and marquez are currently showing us what great p4p fighters can do

I do agree it's a styles/abilities issue. 7lb is really not that much of a difference. Hatton just struggled again one, and lost to another, at WW because of the styles rather than the sizes. Certainly PBF should not be put down to Hatton fighting in the "wrong" division, since PBF started out two divisions lower than Hatton.

I don't think Hatton will be p4p with a victory over Pac but that's nothing to do with staying in one weight class, merely the lack of top fighters on his resume. If he was to take on and beat JMM after Pac then I think the argument could be made.
