There are plenty of fighters he could fight to improve his standing.

Since when is beating 6 top level fighters not better than beating 4? His standing will improve with every big win he gets.
So who else is out there that seriously makes any significant impact to what he has achieved? There are some potential good guys, maybe Chad Dawson will come good, maybe not, he's still an untested challenge at this point and if Calzaghe was to fight him and beat him easy it would be because Dawson is shite and not because Joe is good. Pavlik already been exposed.

Who would you suggest he should fight that will really improve his leagacy?

Dawson is not untested he has wins over Adamek, Johnson and Tarver. He has also held two of the "big four" world titles, so he is hardly untested.

The winner of Taylor vs Froch would be a good fight to improve his legacy. Beating Hopkins more clearly in a rematch would improve his legacy. A win over Dawson would also do a lot for his legacy. He could also fight Erdei for the linear and WBO titles. He might even want to move up to Cruiserweight and take on Adamek for the undisputed title up there, which would certainly add to his legacy.

So basically you've got : Taylor/Froch, Hopkins, Dawson, Erdei & Adamek.

A win over any of those fighters would be amongst his best wins. So, please, don't tell me that is not good for his legacy.

Joe is done. He quit while winning and doesnt need to fight anymore.

So what are you saying, he was the man in two divisions but now has to add cruiserweight. What next, Heaveyweight, olympic gold in fencing, win the grand national by 4 lengths, when does it get to be enough. Isn't what he has achived so far good enough?

Please don't tell me that boxing is more important than his family, it's not as if he needs the money either is it?

I didn't say he had to, I said it would add to his legacy. Do you deny that it would add to his legacy?

What is all of this "enough" nonsense?

So, what if he doesn't need the money? Is that all that boxing is about?

If he doesn't care about his legacy then fine. I am just saying that if he did continue then he could easily add to his achievements and improve his standing in the sport hugely.

sg1985 wrote:how? by a rematch with hopkins? someone everyone criticized him for fighting in the first place?
I didn't criticize him for it. I and many others thought it was a very good fight to take.
sg1985 wrote:or fighting dawson? or froch, who if he beats will just be refered to as 'oh we didnt think they were that good anyway' like everyone did with 'the new tyson' jeff lacy.
Calzaghe still gets a lot of credit for beating Lacy. If Calzaghe didn't have his win over Lacy then would he be rated as highly as he is now? I doubt it.

Dawson has already proven far more than Lacy, so a win over him cannot be dismissed as nothing. If Froch beats Taylor then he would also have proven himself.
sg1985 wrote:he cant improve his standing, there is no fight out there that could put him at number p4lb so whats the point?
Do you mean number one P4P? I think a win over Adamek could put him at P4P number one, or destroying Hopkins or Dawson.

It also improves his all time ranking by a place or two for every win he gets over the top fighters. I think that is worth something.

cmon Horse, you can't tell me that beating the winner of Froch/Taylor or Dawson will be seen as a higher profile than beating Hopkins. The man is 36, been boxing for 20 years why go on and risk your health. He has cleared out the big names he could. I'm sorry but I just don;t see him fighting these guys as adding to his legacy, other than more unbeaten fights.

You can;t tell me Duran or Chavez improved their legacy by continuing to fight on past their best. Surely better to get out while still healthy. Look at what Roy Jones has become. Calzaghe has already made his mark and will be remembered by Kessler, Hopkins, Jones and Lacy. Also 20 odd defences and at times poor opposition. Not disimlar to Larry Holmes career. I don;t see any reason to fight on. His mark has been made.

It doesn't need to be more high profile than the Hopkins win, it will still add a lot to his legacy. It would definately be in his top 5 wins to beat the winner of Froch/Taylor or Dawson.

His mark has been made, but he could leave a bigger mark if he carried on beating the best.

Or he could lose because he is past his best and then his legacy would be tarnished.

There is nobody available better than what he has already beaten.

Froch, Johnson and Dawson are not better than Hopkins, Kessler, Lacy et al.

I like Froch but he has other avenues to pursue - Taylor for starters.

Joe's finished. End of story.

Calzaghe has retired and that is up to him. But, if posters are going to say that there is nothing he could have done to improve his legacy, then I am going to tell them what a load of balls that is.

Not looking to flog a dead horse here (pardon that :) . What if Calzaghe fights Dawson and loses, how does that improve his legacy. His time to improve his legacy was 10 years ago not now.

I am not saying that he is not risking anything. If he loses to Dawson then his legacy is going to suffer, if he wins then his legacy will improve.

He probably should have done more 10 years ago, but it is not too late even now if he wants it.
