Watson outboxed, outfoxed, and at times, outclassed Gethin. I realise the judging of any sport is based on opinion, but I can't for the life of me see how anybody could have scored that fight to Gethin. He had a few fleeting instances of success at the start and end of the fight. Nowhere near enough to take a decision.

Aside from the result, Watson gained the most from the fight. He will improve for the rounds. Could the same be said of Gethin ? If they were to box again, I believe we would see more of the same from Gethin, but in my opinion, Watson would cut out the couple of lapses in concentration he exhibited over a distance he had no previous experience of. The result, I believe, would be more emphatic.

Rather than criticise Watson's performance, which all things considered, was a very good one - he should be applauded for taking such a risky fight against a boxer who was favoured by many neutrals to beat him.

Just because Watson isn't quite ready for John Murray after 10 fights, that does not presuppose that after a few more 8 or 10 rounders, he won't have gained the vital experience and learned the tough lessons necessary to have success at that level.

Personally, I think Willie Limond would be a perfect opponent for Watson in the coming 6 months. He would build up rounds, ringcraft, and would be a good benchmark of his level of skill.

What is Thaxton? I didn't realise he was boxing at catchweight on Saturday.
