I dont think Baldy would have beaten Hatton. Even Gatti was outboxing him until he gassed.

Besides Hatton has/never will be a fully fledged Welter, wheras Baldy fought at light middle recently.

I'll take my hat off to him for the Malignaggi win though - I fancied PM to win that one.

But folks are right, as brilliantly as Hatton has done I think people (well those in the know at least) will always remember that Hatton didn't fight the best on his own doorstep in Junior the Hitter Witter :box: :box:

That said, if Witter KO's him, he probably doesn't get the fight in America (PBF), so you might say it's swings and roundabouts.

Before Hatton fought Tsyzu, there was really no excuse for avoiding Witter, because Hatton was padding his record out with all manner of non descripts. To say Witter wasn't a credible opponent back then would be ridiculous.

Once the Tsyzu fight happened, you could understand why Ricky would put a Witter fight on the back burner, because given his popularity and new status, he could realistically demand serious dollar against big names. You can't fault him for taking on Castillo and Mayweather, and stepping up to face Collazo was also a good challenge. But when Witter bagged the WBC title he was propelled back into the frame. After Hatton lost to Mayweather, in my mind there was absolutely no justification for dismissing the current WBC Champ Witter saying he brought nothing to the table and then fighting Juan friggin Lazcano! That was the perfect opportunity to make the fight and Hattons credibility took a beating in my opinion. Of course once Witter lost his title he lost his main bartering chip and the fight is gone forever now. I'd definitely be interested to see how Hatton would fare against Bradley but I doubt that will ever happen either.

Hatton unpopular amongst real fans? Get real mate.

I really like Hatton, I think he's a top bloke who's done it his way and made something for himself, he's showed other boxers the way to promote themselves, e.g. earlier in his career doing all the after dinner speaking and picking up loyal fans a few hundred at a time until the momentum built into a landslide and he was a real public name and celebrity.

Do you see many other boxers working that hard to get themselves a profile? No, they seem to expect their promoters to do it single-handedly. Ok allegedly also did wonders for Ricky but I think Ricky did a lot for himself, look at someone like Witter, he has zero popularity because he doesnt come across well and does zero to promote himself, between fights you here absolutely nothing and his website cant even be arsed to update it can they!

Now people are always gona dismiss Hatton as a 'populist' 'everyman' fighter who the 'unkowledgeable hordes' worship. However it shouldn't take away from the fact that he has done brilliant with the tools he was born with and has worked very hard to get into the position he is in now.

Now I will say there is one little thing which grates on me with Ricky and that is him referring to himself in the 3rd person in interviews. I always hate it when celebrities do that, I think it is a slight sign that some of the fame has inflated his ego a little bit too much, however apart from that gripe I will say he is still very down to earth for the level of fame he has, he just seems to sometimes play on the 'everyday guy' stereotype which is sad because he really doesn't need to, we know he is an everyday guy from Hyde so he doesnt need to keep saying it in interviews referring to 'Ricky Hatton' instead of I and me, silly and annoying little gripe I know!

It can be quite funny when non-boxing fans pretend to be knowledgeable about boxing. I had a mate betting me a tenner just last week that Tyson KO'd SUGAR RAY LEONARD for the heavyweight world title in the 80s. No BS.

I am being real mate and anyone who reads the boxing forums knows that Hatton has a lot of knockers. I just want to find out why because i'm a fan, look check out this poll and the results surprised me as its so close:

Yeh is a close call, I just voted for Hatton of course. I am from manchester and Hatton is a god in Manchester. Maybe in other parts he aint so popular I duno. I think like some people have said on that thread, maybe the Hatton brand is starting to tire on some people who see it as a money-making exercise, but come on.

I think about it this way, when Ricky Hatton is gone, who on the biritsh scene will we have to take part in such superfights such as those with Mayweather, Pacman etc. These are golden times for us, it is nice that we have a fighter with the worldwide name and clout to actually make these fights happen - to make the boxing world look at british boxing. It is a typical British trait that we bring people up to then knock them down at their height.

My main (only) problem with the Hatton camp is the lies and the rip offs. I specifically say rip offs because thats exactly what it is when the thousands of tickets allocated to Team Hatton (ie responsibility of Ricky) v Mayweather supposedly for Hatton fans went straight to the ticket touts and organised tours (ie organised touts). That is exactly what a 'man of the people' would never do - skim extra profit above the face value of the tickets.

The lies: We were going to fight Paulie in New York but then we discovered Las Vegas will be cheaper for the British fans (Ray Hatton).
The most patronising crock of shit I've ever heard.

I think this only happens when people who make it big become a bit sucked in by their own hype. I think Ricky has worked damn hard to get where he is and to promote himself to the fans, but not every fighter out there has a marketable gimmick that they can push on people. Guys like Witter see themselves as athletes, no nonsense fighters who do their talking in the ring. Ricky is a warrior, no doubt about it, but once he achieved a certain level of success it became obvious he was no longer just an athlete, but he was a businessman too. It was this business approach that prevented the Witter fight ever happening.

Of course you can't really blame Ricky for adopting this attitude, he is just maximising his earning potential. But I have always said that if a boxer puts his desire to create a lasting legacy second to blatantly chasing the £££, then they have got to expect some sort of backlash from boxing fans. But of course that backlash probably wont worry them as they are collecting their next huge cheque and booking their next appearance on Jonathan Ross!

I personally feel no different to him now than i did before the KT fight but a large numbe seem to be on his case, so why is this? here are some ideas which you may or may not agree with:
1. he is to over exposed and we here the same old sound bites over and over again?
2. That he has been adopted by the casual sports fan who when talk boxing only know Hatton and the hype that sky have fed them?
3. he didnt fight Witter?
4. His poor lifestyle outside of the ring?
5.his excuses to losing to PBF or bad performences?
6. how he seems to talk about himself in the third person?
7. playing the lad card with all the football, oasis BS

As i said before i dont have a problem with the guy but wish he would sort out his drinking and lifestyle between fights as its a bad advert for the sport. I do hate all the fools & horses stuff mind.
The new 'die hard' boxing fan buys into and cops the cynical with all the celebrity 'BoxFightSims' banter that makes what they say relevant. Right now (as much as i like Haye and the refresher that he brings) he's teaching to an audience that already believes and wants to be completely (sold) converted.

I like the game less (yet a fooking again).

Leave Hatton alone - he has brought much cheer and his lifestyle in between fights makes him as common as the fans that go to see him. In fact, with the montony of the sport and the amount of dedication it takes I doubt he would have lasted as far as has if he was to commit as far as other would like. He's no ATG - just a very good world titlist.

Everyone is introduced to the sport by one fighter - be it Duran, Leonard, Ali, Tyson, Naz or Hatton - there is always one fighter that is the catalyst for an individual to become a boxing fan.

Then once they have found the sport and realised there are other fighters worthy of their interest, then their interest grows further.

In about 5-10 years time you'll see the impact Hatton had on British boxing, when you see a stack of amateur talent appearing and/or turning professional.

Like the fact that, despite being a minority, since Naz we have had an influx of British Asian fighters - from Khan to Siddique who captained the England squad.

Hatton is solid gold for boxing in my opinion.

Top post!

At the end of the day, boxing is a dangerous sport and the time in the spotlight can be very fleeting. The way Hatton has marketed himself and promoted himself should be an example to every british upcoming fighter about how to build a fanbase.

The way Witter has done things should be given as the polar opposite example. His one trick has been spitting out spite and bile about another fighter, which only makes him sound a slightly nasty/unlikeable person, which I'm sure he isn't really, just that if all he ever does is call someone in his statements, people will think he's basically a bitch.

Obviously Hatton has marketed himself as a personality as well as a boxer and not every boxer can have his cheeky and likeable personality, but I would say things such as a good website, good press communications, doing public functions, helping charitys blah blah blah are all good things to do for an upcoming boxer to get themselves a name.

Personally, I think he is a great fighter. A rarity in that since he has taken control of his own career, he only looks for big name fights.

Fair play to the bloke tbh.

PS Best thing he ever done was give Frank Warrent the boot - that guy stiffles careers.

What a load of bollox - "us real fans", "real boxing fans" - who says that real boxing fans dont rate Hatton? The few arrogant miserable bistards that post their opinions on here do not constitute genuine fans, or elite fans, or more knowldegable fans. And that does not mean that every boxing fan who posts on here fits into the latter category either - only those that believe they are superior to the vast majority of fans of which many probably do not use sites like this. It is an arrogant assumption and an overwhelmingly easy one, to state that a REAL FAN agrees with "my opinion".

Hatton has thousands of fans, who enjoy his fights and like his personality. Others don't, but that does not demean the opinions of those that do. For me, Hatton is clearly a world class fighter, though with certain limitations (like most boxers). He has achieved more than most boxers who step in the ring will, and has entertained for many years. It is all too easy to sit in an armchair and make criticisms, he's the one getting into the ring and putting his life on the line and making a success of himself.

For the record, I am personally not a fan of Hatton - been bored by most of his fights since KT, though I am intrigued by his progress with Mayweather Snr.

Laughable thread.

I think he is fantastic for Boxing. His attitude inside the ropes, his willingness to test himself is refreshing.

So he enjoys a pint or 2, you do not accomplish what he has, fighting for world titles if you are not in shape. Yes he plays up the lard boy role etc...but as a complete package I cant understand why 'genuine boxing fans' would dislike him.

Solid guy, solid pr0.

out of interest, would anyone be even commenting on this if hatton was american? it seems a lot of this gripe is because he is english. either way, he has us taking about him which means he has an effect on boxing. love him or hate him we all have an opinion on him and that to me makes him a popular fighter.
but i wish he would stop going on about the k t fight. that was ages ago
