Do Rahman, Williams and Toney count as up and comers? Toney is 40, Williams is losing nearly as many as he is winning lately, Rahman has been champion twice and is doing little lately.

firstly, don't treat me like a fool ok.
of course rahman etc. aren't up and comers.
i don't believe that none of these guys or the younger promising heavyweights want to fight meehan.

Kali has done enough to get a shot at a title. His defeat of Williamson should have secured it. It is now up to Don King to secure the shot, but as we know dealing with Sauerland can prove difficult at best. There is a lot of bigger money fights out there for Valuev if he choses and this may be the problem for Kali. Good luck to him, but time seems to be running out.

Chagaev and Valuev are now set to fight on May 30, so while it's good the WBA will unify (FFS, unifying one quarter of the title...), it puts Meehan back again, especially with Ruiz having been gifted the mandatory spot. Best he can hope for now is the Valuev-Chagaev winner accommodates him as a voluntary in the next fight.

Ruiz must be giving
IT to someone in the WBA, he's hopeless and has had more title shots than anyone.

I disagree he's hopeless. If you don't like his style, fair enough, but his record speaks for itself and he is undoubtedly still one of the top 10 in this weak division. However it's ludicrous to make him the mandatory when he's 0-3 against Valuev and Chagaev and hasn't fought since the Valuev rematch.

I think you know what i'm saying though don't you, he's boring, not a world champ.
It's time for someone else and it doesn't have to be Meehan, although it would be nice.
By the way Chageav fought Drummond and what rematch?

Ruiz is 0-3 against Valuev and Chagaev. Ruiz has not fought since HIS rematch with Valuev.

On another forum somebody described Ruiz's boxing style as "Greco Roman."
He is also famous for being knocked out in 19 seconds by David Tua.

Kali's last fight was eight months ago. He has had three fights in the last 18 months, which is pretty active for a man in his late 30s.
As for the legal side, your guess is as good as mine.

an "update" of sorts
By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing
WBA #1 heavyweight Kali Meehan spoke to Fightnews about John Ruiz’ recent statements and says he will be happy to fight Ruiz for the mandatory position and the right to challenge Nicolay Valuev for the WBA championship. Meehan also claims he got the better of Ruiz in many sparring sessions. “I hear that John Ruiz is not happy at the moment and he has the mandatory challenge,” said Meehan. “If anyone should be angry it is me! I am rated #1 in the WBA, which in their rules means I am the mandatory challenger. I thought I would have got the challenge against Valuev, and somehow Holyfield got it, and then John Ruiz got it again.”
“I was made to fight after the main event between Ruiz and Valuev,” Meehan continued. “I found out later the reason why was because Ruiz was complaining for more money, and there was concern that he might not enter the ring that night, so i was made to fight after the main event, just in case I had to step in as replacement for Ruiz. I found out the reason after my fight.
“I accept that, but when I heard that Ruiz has been made the mandatory challenger — that is a slap in the face. And now he is complaining? That is another slap in the face!
“I take my hat off to you John Ruiz, because even though you have a style the fans dont like to watch because you hold to much, you have fought everyone and anyone. I believe me and you should fight to decide who the real mandatory challenger should be. How about it John? I predict it won’t go past eight rounds. Remember our sparring?”

I've got a feeling that Cerrone Fox will let Meehan walk........... well walk right thru him.
What a joke, almost a 9 months out of the ring and you fight a 8-9 guy.

Hoppa gets McCall, and meehan gets Fox, how does that work.
Hoppa fights in Vegas, Meehan go's to finland, this is certainly an upside down business.

Brewster is also on the Chagaev/Valuev card. He has an 8 rounder and no dancing partner.
Maybe the opponents will be changed and Kali will fight him. You can only hope.

if this is the case ,Meehan should also fight Michael Kirby for the OPBF title because the IRON RHINO would take this fight .
if Kali wins he gets the title , if Michael wins he gets Kali's ranking and Australia gets to see a great fight over here.
Don't forget Manny PACMAN had the OPBF just before the World title .
so it wouldn't do Kali any harm to fight for it if he's willing to fight Cerrone Fox.

Something tells me this fight was not Kali's choice. It just gives him exposure on a championship card. I would like to see the "Iron Rhino" fight some better fighters before facing Kali Meehan.
As for the OPBF Heavyweight title, Meehan KOed Peter Okhello in 3 rounds in an elimination fight to fight for that title. Okhello went on to hold the OPBF title. Okhello went on to fight for a world title and Meehan is still the only man to KO him.

I know what Kali's got and I know what Michael's got all I'm saying is Michael is willing to fight him. So no one can say that everyone in OZ is not willing to fight him.

i understand the will to fight someone is important. but this business has so many different facets to it. Meehan probably won't come back here to fight again. He has goals that can only be achieved in the states or europe.

thats fine i would love kali to fight and win a world title , but if he is only being lead around the garden park it would be a good fight to take.

Michael is a good fighter, but he has not had Kali's international experience, as well as Kali having had four times as many fights. I do not think it would do him any good to throw him to the wolves too early. Give him time.

Well he has his chance to impress on the Chagaev-Valuev card. An impressive win could see him fight the winner.

KALI Meehan remembers thinking fortunes were only made at sea. On prawn trawlers. Which is why two packed bags sat near the front door of his Auckland apartment this particular Sunday night.
And then the phone rang.
"Yeah, I'll never forget it because I was sitting up in bed, eating a tub of ice cream," Meehan grins. "All my stuff was packed. I was heading down the harbour next morning.
"Then out of the blue my mate calls up. Telling me how in a few days there's this fight in Oz . . . and how they want me as an opponent."
And so the wannabe fisherman listened as his pal talked up a lousy purse worth $3000. Talked down mad Melbourne heavyweight James Grima. Said, hey, the fight is even being held in some mad party town called Surfers Paradise.
"And after only four professional fights in Auckland, man, I saw this as my chance," Meehan says. "I decided the money could wait."
A decade on and Kali "Check Mate" Meehan is still waiting.
Still working on an F3 road gang despite knocking Grima out in five that night.
Despite signing with Don King, winning 35 of 38 fights and throwing punches everywhere from Wyong RSL to Madison Square Garden.
Meehan's is a tale of dodgy financiers, fairweather sponsors and shifts as a furniture removalist. Of training in gyms where asbestos fell from the roof and, during one real rough trot, going two years without throwing a punch.
In 2004, he was robbed of the WBA title in a bout against American Lamon Brewster. The Indiana heavyweight was so badly whooped even his old man suggested he give the belt to the Aussie next door.
"But whaddya do?" shrugs this 39-year-old father of three boys.
"Because you've gotta stay ready if you want to become heavyweight champion of the world."
Which is why you'll find this Central Coast construction worker on the street outside his Wyongah home by 4am, jogging anywhere from eight to 16 kilometres.
Working a shovel on the F3 by seven and back home to pound the heavy bag some 12 hours later.
It's why Meehan is flying out of Sydney tonight without fanfare or sponsors. A fortnight sparring in Cyprus before arriving in Finland on May 30 for a spot on the WBA heavyweight title undercard.
Right now, Meehan doesn't know his opponent. Only that he'll win. The No. 1 WBA contender then faces either a victorious Nikolay Valuev or Ruslan Chagaev for the title itself.
"And you get that belt, man, you get everything," he smiles. "Yep, even the pay day."
