Isn't it ironic that Tony Jefferies splitting amicably with Joe Gallagher generates 5 pages...... and this MAJOR, if albeit SLIGHTLY unsurprising (when they announced he was going to reveal his plans at the stables center I expected his next fight to be announced), news story struggles to get into the 2nd page.

Had DLH announced to fight Chavez Jnr - I am sure there would have been more moans and groans about "doing for the ££££", conning the fans, an event not a fight, mis match etc. Seems like there there is only about 5 or 6 of us who want to say thanks for the memories. I guess the only way he could ever shut the critcs up is by retiring.

The thing is ( I think) most know DLH to be a cheesy grinning cash regsiter who fights once a year against hand picked opposition.

Well promoted. Picked the right fights. Inspired a generation of new fighters. Broke the stranglehold of Arum and King.

He has done agreat deal for th eprofile of the sport and for that I salute him.

He made the most of his talents ( no way was he the most talented , he had no head movement AT ALL and poor stamina even 10 years ago).

But he is, imo, less than genuine.

Also, I remember he slated Tyson saying he was bad for Boxing ( in some ways, yes), but TYSON is the most well known fighter since ALI and that is not because of his out of the Ring misdemeanors.

Not that I care what fighters do outside the Ring, its their life, but DLH is no saint, cheated on his wife many times and had kids out of wedlock, he is not the saint some make out, but personally I could not care less about that.

He is a cheesy grinning cash register when all is said and done, good luck to him!

Might not be relevant, but I got more text messages from my friends about this news - than Hatton vs Pacquiao, Froch vs Taylor and Khan vs Kotelnik (the latter two nobody has texted me about), also more on this than Joe's retirement.

I have recieved more text messages on the Haye vs Klitchsko fight however.

That was no stinker - 2 big knockdowns and tension all the way through with DLH backing away like a scared rabbit until the last round...

Better spectacle than the 1st Chavez fight and we got that rematch!

Chavez vs DLH 1 ended inconclusively, the Quartey fight ended with Ike in dire trouble on the verge of being stopped.... plus then Quartey decided to move up the weights, he never pressed for a rematch.

2005 and at Middleweight, the guy hadn't fought for 5 years! Leonard was pressing for RJJ after Camacho also!

You mean the 10rounds Quartey dominated Yep had Quartey winning but Delahoya certainly finnished strong

Could someone who was old enough to remember both tell me , was there more hype surrounding dlh or srl after there respective olympics ?
I suspect it was srl but i know it was a big deal when dlh turned pro

I think he should of retired after Steve Forbes that should he wasnt a patch on his old self

Look at his record and you`ll see alot more top fighters he fought than probably the majority of Hall of famers.

As soon as a little over 6mths into his pro career he was demolishing former world champions and within 3yrs fighting a whos who of the top guys about at that time ... and continued to do so for almost the next 10yrs .. name me another fighter whos done the same or similar?

Everything had to be stacked in is favour. He only wanted Vargas and SSM ( rematch ) after both were mashed up.

I remember he ducked the SSM rematch...until Forrest beat SSM!

But he did a lot for the sport!

i bet they say hell no cos it made them an awful lot of money.

Oscasr DID duck te immediate rematch!

SSM only turned him down when he did not like the money, then he fought Winky INSTEAD! Winky was after Forrest!

DLH had fought Mosley a 2nd time BEFORE he fought Mosley.... so what do you think he turned down - a 3rd fight?

Exactly, and I fail to see why the fights were all massively stacked in his favour.

Pacquiao was at a weight which DLH had to kill himself to make. Stacked in his favour would have been Pacquiao at 154.

Off course he WAITED for Vargas to be a shot (at 26 or something like that!!!) fight, it had NOTHING to do with the fact that DLH started his career two stone lighter than that, and it takes a while to mature through the weights. If's he'd fought Vargas a year before, even the Vargas he fought - he would have lost cause he wasn't mature enough physically to do 11stone and be strong.

Off course he WAITED for Quatey to take a year out before fighting him.... nothing to do with the fact that Quartey is a lazy old so and so who OFTEN takes huge breaks in his career.

Off course he waited for Trinidad to be dead at the weight..... even though there was no sign of it in his previous fights - maybe, just maybe - DLH made him look predestrian.

there is a defining moment in oscar's career for me.

and it's the point on the sky commentary of the 9th rd of oscar-tito when ian darke says "de la hoya looking like one of the great fighters in history". it's just at the point when he's beginning to go negative in the fight.

and the rest as they say is a case of not quite. :(

an atg though and a record to be proud of.
