What terribly sad news. Although the deaths of Arguello, Forrest and Gatti were awfully sad, there's something about Sutherland that just hits a bit harder.

I didn't know him personally, but I asked him on here about where he saw himself in a years time and what he wanted to achieve from his career-and got a very polite response. I saw him box at Stoke, and he walked about 6 feet in front of me during his entrance that night.

He seemed to be a genuine talent and a future world champion. Having caught a glimpse of him in the crowd on FFN the other day, its amazing to think he committed suicide a day or two later.

Genuinely shocking, R.I.P. Darren

Terribly, terribly sad news this and I am gutted. I was really impressed with him as both a boxer and as a person from what I had seen and read. He will be sadly missed by the sport and my symathies go to his family and friends. I also really feel for Frank Maloney for whom it must have been a terrible shock. Truly tragic news.

Whilst hearing the news last night (thanks for the call, Spud) I decided not to post anything until I could actually take this in.
Darren came over to Sheffield with his holdall over his shoulder as a raw talent many years ago, and asked Brendan if he could join the gym.
As is always the case at Wincobank, he was welcomed with open arms.
He soon became "one of the lads" got a place at College and continued with his studies - something good old Brendan always endorses.
He worked in a Sports shoe shop in the Meadowhall Centre for a bit of pin money.
Darren was an articulate but quiet young lad.
I remember fondly how he'd often get ripped for being a "Mummies boy" but in a friendly jovial way.
Then he was off back to Ireland as he got homesick I believe.
I didn't hear anything again about Darren until the lead up to the Olympics.
Then he turns pro - and then he posts on here.
Got in touch with him by pm and reminisced for a while about his days in Sheffield.
On days like today, I feel a fraud - worrying about my petty little problems and aches and pains.
Whilst I wasn't a friend of Darren's I feel so down about this.
God bless Darren - a fine young man, articulate, friendly, and an awesome talent.
Then ther's Frank.
The butt of jokes often, but as close as a Manager or Promotor could get to any boxer.
Get well soon Frank.

Quality post, I think a lot of people are feeling that their own problems are insignificant today.

Words cannot describe what has happened.

He did his family, friends, supporters and his country proud in what he achieved as both an amateur and a professional, and also as a person.

A tragic loss that will never be forgotten.

This news is just shocking, absolutely shocking.

We all have our problems on a daily basis and this sort of thing puts it all into perspective..........

RIP Darren and my thoughts go out to his family also.

Thoughts also to Frank Maloney - don't know him obviously but comes accross as a man who genuinely cares for his fighters and we need people like that in Boxing

Sad news, I thought he was the best British based boxer from the Bejing Olympics.

And Frank thought he was having a bad week with the McDermott fight, this puts it all into perspective :(

He wasn't the kind of character you could dislike.

I wonder if he knew how many kinds words would be said and how much support he would have.
I suspect he didn't...and that's the choker.

My brother phoned me at about 11pm last night (he rarely calls me at such a time) so I knew something was up but no way did I think it would be him telling me of Sitherland's death!

27, not yet even reached the prime of his life, where's the justice, you have to wonder?

The has been the most horrendous year for boxers or ex-boxer's passing away. Just what is going on?

Sutherland was talented, bu all accounts he was a nice guy, very popular amongst everyone!

My heart goes out to his family, especially his parents!

Ive sourced a few videos here should anyone want to reflect on them.

Likewise if anyone has any more, especially amateur fights, i'd be pleased if you could share them with us all.

I had the pleasure of sparring with, and training alongside Darren, at the Ingle gym for two years, before he went back to Ireland. I would describe him as being thoughtful, generous, kind, articulate, quiet and very likeable. He had talent then, and it was fascinating to watch him in the olympics with a totally different boxing style, which showed how adaptable and how muich talent he had.I feel very sad about writing about him in the past tense and I have not yet been able to take it all in.I am hugely upset by this and my sympathies and thoughts go out to all his family and friends.A terribly tragedy.

I was also very sad to read that Frank Maloney has been ill as well and I wish him a full and speedy recovery.My thoughts are with him also.
