Fury-Wilder III: T-Mobile Arena Venue Hold Approved By NSAC

Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder appear to have a home for the final leg of their heavyweight trilogy.

Event co-promoters Top Rank and TGB Promotions have placed a venue hold on T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to host the third fight between Fury and Wilder. The request was approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) during its monthly agenda hearing held Tuesday via remote conference call.

The heavyweight championship clash is tentatively scheduled to take place July 24 on Pay-Per-View. It will mark the first fight for either boxer since their rematch last February, when England’s Fury (30-0-1, 21KOs) became the first to defeat Alabama’s Wilder (42-1-1, 41KOs) via 7th round knockout at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Their bout produced the largest-ever live gate for a heavyweight main event, amassing $16,916,440 in ticket sales in addition to generating well north of $60,000,000 in PPV revenue.

Fury headlined the last boxing event to take place at T-Mobile Arena, coming in his September 2019 unanimous decision win over previously unbeaten Otto Wallin. The event came three months after Fury’s Las Vegas debut, in which he stopped Germany’s Tom Schwartz in the 2nd round of their June 2019 ESPN+ headliner from MGM Grand.

The forthcoming July 24 clash will mark Fury’s fourth straight Vegas appearance, with the event serving as the third fight in a row in town for Wilder. Prior to the rematch with Fury, Wilder registered the 10th successful defense of his WBC heavyweight title following a 7th round knockout of Luis Ortiz in their November 2019 rematch at MGM Grand. The bout took place nearly 21 months after their March 2018 thriller, with Wilder bumping off a then-unbeaten version of Ortiz via 10th round knockout at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Wilder and Fury met for the first time in December 2018, fighting to a 12-round split decision draw atop a Showtime Pay-Per-View event from Staples Center in Los Angeles. The bout was the third for Fury since returning to the sport that prior June, his record now 5-0-1 (3KOs) over the span of his comeback tour after being away from the ring for more than 30 months following a November 2015 win over Wladimir Klitschko to claim the lineal heavyweight championship.

Prior to moving forward with the contractually bound third fight with Wilder, Fury was in advanced talks to face England’s Anthony Joshua (24-1, 22KOs) for the undisputed heavyweight championship. The dream superfight between the pair of British heavyweights was eyed for August 14 in Saudi Arabia, though never able to get over the finish line due to a lengthy legal battle with Wilder.

The terms of the contract for their February 2020 rematch allowed for the loser to exercise a clause calling for a third fight. Wilder did just that a week or so after their fight, only for plans to get delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and other contributing factors. Efforts to stage the event last December fell through, with reasons varying depending on which side of the story you believe.

An independent arbitration judge sided with Wilder, ruling that Fury was bound to the terms of the contract and thus could not proceed with any other fight. From there, it didn’t take long for the two sides to agree on the July 24 date.

Original plans called for the trilogy affair to head to Allegiant Stadium, home to the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders. In fact, the five-person NSAC panel was prepared to approve that agenda item before it was revealed by Bob Bennett, executive director of the Nevada commission that the stadium was no longer in play for the event.

Nevada attorney general Mike Detmer clarified the change in plans for the request to instead be for T-Mobile Arena. The venue generally serves as home to the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights and has previously hosted eight boxing events dating back to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s 6th round knockout Amir Khan to defend his middleweight championship in May 2016.

The third fight between Fury and Wilder comes as Nevada has once again allowed full venue capacity for sporting and entertainment events.

Kownacki-Helenius Rematch, Efe Ajagba-Frank Sanchez Slated For Fury-Wilder Undercard

The third battle between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder won’t be the only intriguing heavyweight fight to take place July 24 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

BS.com has learned that the rematch between Adam Kownacki and Robert Helenius is expected to be placed on the Fury-Wilder undercard. BS.com also has confirmed that representatives for unbeaten heavyweights Efe Ajagba and Frank Sanchez are close to finalizing a deal for them to square off as part of an ESPN/FOX Sports pay-per-view venture.

Heavyweight Jared Anderson (9-0, 9 KOs), a promising prospect promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc., will be showcased in the pay-per-view opener against an opponent to be announced.

The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger was the first Tuesday night to report the Ajagba-Sanchez fight on Twitter.

As was the case with the Fury-Wilder rematch in February 2020, Top Rank (ESPN) and Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions (FOX Sports) each have the contractual right to one pay-per-view undercard bout apiece – Kownacki-Helenius II for PBC and Anderson’s fight for Top Rank – and one shared bout besides Fury-Wilder on the pay-per-view show (Ajagba-Sanchez).

Kownacki will attempt to avenge his surprising fourth-round, technical-knockout defeat to Finland’s Helenius in March 2020 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Kownacki’s hometown. Helenius (30-3, 19 KOs) knocked down the heavily favored Kownacki (20-1, 15 KOs) twice during the fourth round of a fight FOX televised.

Helenius and Kownacki agreed to terms for their rematch late last year. Their second bout was expected to be broadcast earlier this year as a “PBC On FOX” main event, but instead is an intriguing addition to the Fury-Wilder III undercard.

Nigeria’s Ajagba (15-0, 12 KOs) and Cuba’s Sanchez (18-0, 13 KOs) will meet in a high-stakes scrap that’ll legitimize one of them as a heavyweight contender.

Ajagba, a 2016 Olympian, was showcased by Haymon’s PBC before he signed a multi-fight contract with Top Rank last year. Sanchez is a PBC-affiliated fighter who has had his past two bouts streamed by DAZN as part of stablemate Canelo Alvarez’s undercards.

England’s Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs), the WBC champion, and Wilder (42-1-1, 41 KOs), of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, will fight for the third time in the main event July 24.

Fury dropped Wilder twice and won their rematch by seventh-round technical knockout when Wilder’s assistant trainer, Mark Breland, threw in the towel to spare Wilder from taking more punishment at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Maybe, maybe not, but Dilllian Whyte certainly thinks he did.

We might see it one way and the guys in the ring might see it another.

Agreed. No way we would have been treated to a card like this under Fury v AJ in Absolute Monarchyville.

A Matchroom Vs Queensbury Vs Top Rank card would have the potential of being excellent, even moreso if it was mostly heavyweights. Maybe 1% chance of that happening.

Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder III To Be Announced At Press Conference Tuesday In Los Angeles

Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder will return to the city where they first fought to promote their third heavyweight title fight.

Boxing Scene has learned that their third bout will be officially announced at a press conference Tuesday afternoon in Los Angeles. The site of their press conference and whether it’ll be open to the public had not been determined as of Wednesday morning.

Fury and Wilder are scheduled to fight again July 24 in Las Vegas. The Nevada State Athletic Commission approved a request by Top Rank Inc. and TGB Promotions at its monthly meeting Tuesday to reserve T-Mobile Arena as the site for their ESPN/FOX Sports pay-per-view fight.

England’s Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs) will defend the WBC title he won when he stopped Wilder (42-1-1, 41 KOs) in the seventh round of their rematch in February 2020 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Fury floored Wilder once apiece in the third and fifth rounds and continued to overwhelm Wilder with his pressure and physicality until Wilder’s assistant trainer, Mark Breland, threw in the towel during the seventh round.

Wilder exercised his contractual right to their third fight soon after suffering his first professional defeat. Their third encounter was tentatively scheduled three times, only to be postponed indefinitely due to crowd restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bob Arum’s Top Rank, Fury’s co-promoter, and promoter Eddie Hearn then attempted to instead schedule a Fury-Anthony Joshua showdown. A deal for that very lucrative heavyweight title unification fight was near completion before an arbitrator ruled May 17 that Fury is contractually obliged to face Wilder a third time next.

Almost all terms of the contracts for their third fight were finalized in the spring of 2019 as part of a two-fight deal. The final deal points were ironed out within several days of judge Daniel Weinstein’s ruling, yet Wilder-Fury III still hasn’t been officially announced.

They fought to a 12-round split draw in their initial meeting 2½ years ago. The hard-hitting Wilder, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, floored Fury in the ninth and 12th rounds of that Showtime Pay-Per-View main event, but Fury made it to the final bell in December 2018 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

That is a good card. Even Anderson v Tereshkin is decent. Tereshkin is unbeaten although his resumé is pretty unambitious considering how long he's been a pro. The thing about facing an unbeaten fighter is they haven't yet discovered their ceiling so it's difficult to gauge how good they are.

I like how they are matching Jared so far. Tereshkin should provide a good learning experience, an opponent who is used to winning, and it doesn't close any doors. What I mean by that is that Anderson may already be able to beat a Gerald Washington or a Dominic Breazeale even now, but if he were to do that it makes it difficult to follow that up with a fight against say Joe Cusumano without getting criticism for going backwards.

At his age he needs to build his experience. He doesn't need to be advanced to contender level too early where he is expected to fight quality opposition before he's completed his apprenticeship.

What if the rumors are true about Fury loading his gloves? Since when has he been a monster puncher? If you look at history, it is the experienced trainers that catch things like that not the commissions. You can bet the farm on this....very close scrutiny on glove issues. No excuses, may the best man win. (Hope there is random testing too because of Fury's past)
