Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
He might be the most talented & he might beat the best from other eras, then again he might not. But let's be honest, a 6'2" 210 lb heavyweight of yesteryear is at a huge disadvantage against a 6'9" 275 lb Tyson Fury. Though it is not like there wasn't men that big decades or even a century ago. However, there probably has never been a man that big & that talented in history of the sport
Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
Is this a serious question?
Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
That's the point isn't it. Willard and Carnera were enormous for their time but they were lumbering and uncoordinated. They would be punching bags for similar sized guys today because they wouldn't be able to match their athleticism (not the good ones of today anyway)thomasjkelley wrote: ↑30 Mar 2020, 19:04 He might be the most talented & he might beat the best from other eras, then again he might not. So why don't they just fight at super middle then? Cut out the "extreme and dangerous measures to dehydrate"?margaret thatcher wrote: ↑30 Mar 2020, 13:30 Little Tom was 5'7 and weighed in the 160s, if you follow boxing as it is today as well, you should know that's about welterweight size. Those guys train themselves down too and take extreme and dangerous measures to deyhydrate and cut their weight so they can make the limit the day ahead but then enter the ring significantly bigger. Where the hell you been man? Were you born in the 1800s too and have yet to learn this? Funny enough Jack of course fought a slightly bigger guy who actually was a middleweight champ just right before and then weighed 156 right after LOL
Because they're not 168ers, and couldn't beat 168ers, let alone men the size of Burns' opponents, anymore than Burns could get down to 147 or qualify in any way as being a welter.

Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
It's a bit of a collective issue now. if they all changed it could work, but if just one guy tries it he's in trouble. You have all top modern non-hws cutting/draining large amounts but then blowing back up ready for the fight,, so if one guy , like a Thurman/Garcia tried fighting vs today's SMWs, they'd be massively outsized.
Look at recent SMW champs like Benny, Smith, Ramirez---all aroind 6'2 or 6'3 with around 10 inches in reach and just far bigger guys naturally--guys that were longer than even Jack Johnson and are probably reaching into the 180s fight time, which is more their natural weight. The smws aren't natural 168 pounders either who are making that weight without their weight cutting regiments and day before weigh ins
Fact is, if these welters didn't drain big and weigh in the day before, we'd be getting them coming in more naturally at the 160s just like Burns.

And look at 6 feetJamie Munguia, defended the 154 wbo belt but was 175 by fight night. way taller and also heavier than Tommy boi. the way things are now, guys outside of HW are 'officially' weighing in at much lighter than their natural weights---they can do that because of current weight cutting practices and also day ahead weigh ins, which give them the time to cut and then add the weight back on
Obviously it would be very different if they had no weight limit to make, the same cutting practices/culture wasn't existing,, and weigh ins were on fight day

Mike Tyson must be kicking himself.
All those years he fought at heavyweight when he should really have been campaigning as a middleweight.
Let's get Andy Ruiz on a diet and he can relaunch his career as a light heavy
Since they apparently have no right being heavyweights.

Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
Mike Tyson is a bizarre one to mention, he was a ripped 220, not in the 160s. I think I read that he was already in the 190s at around 14
Ya, because there is no HW limit a guy like Andy can weigh far above his 'natural' poundage, no doubt. Guys fighting at hw have that 'luxury' in a way the others don't. But if you gotta make weight, then you get the cutting and draining and see all these guys weighing it at significantly less than what they actually weigh fight night, like Jam Munguia being about 176 for a 154 pound title fight

Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
On the basis of that argument then, there's no way Ruiz should have been allowed to face, let alone knock around like a rag doll, a large modern heavyweight such as Joshua.
He should have stayed in his correct weight class like say light heavy or cruiser as he has no business fighting at heavyweight.

Lol, who even knows what his right weight class is under that fat, though he'd still tower above and be much heavier than a guy like Tommy Burns.
middleweight Mike Tyson

Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
If Tommy Burns shouldn't have been fighting Jack Johnson then Andy Ruiz shouldn't be fighting Anthony Joshua.
Similar height difference I'd have thought.
Can't have your cake and eat it old boy.

Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
I never said he shouldn't have been fighting him or that the fight shouldnt have been allowed, just that it was a freakshow time when you get 5'7 160s guys being HW world champ. Now today Jamie Munguia made junior middle defenses at 6 feet 176 pounds, but image him being HW champ
Imagine AJ vs Danny Garcia

Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
Except by your logic Tommy Burns actually had more right to fight Johnson since he was already champion with defences in the double figures.
Whereas Andy Ruiz was a handpicked long shot brought in as cannon fodder.
Your logic doesn't stack up

Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
You're also applying modern rules and science to a time when it didn't exist.
Which is ironic based on some of your other arguments

Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
Lol you are reaching and stretching and distorting all just so you can disagree with me, even when you actually agreed with pretty much every aspect of the weight game
I never said that Burns and Johnson didn't have a right to fight each other, what the heck are you talking about
Sure, they had the right, and that's the man JJ had to beat to become champ, but my gosh what a silly time when a 5'7 160s pounder is the reigning HW champion of the world. Andy Ruiz vs AJ has absoltuely nothing to do with that, and a better equivalent size-wise would be AJ vs Shawn Porter

Lol typical Ewey, I'm glad at least I can keep you interested
Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
But let's disparage Jack Johnson for having the audacity to have to beat a shorter Tommy Burns to win the title..... Like he had any choice in the matter

Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
Not disparaging the man at all, just taking into account the man's opposition when evaluating his career and ranking him compared to other fighters
Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
Because you know well it's nothing like a Joshua facing a Danny Garcia because your applying modern rules and science to a situation where they didn't exist. Rendering the two scenarios completely incomparable
Re: Is Fury the best heavyweight of all time?
Every era has had guys stepping up from lower weights to fight for, and often win the, or at least a, heavyweight title.
