CompuBox Punch Stats & Analysis

Fighting a lot like his Mexican countryman Manuel Medina, Miguel Vazquez appeared to turn back the clock and score enough points to upset Lewis Ritson, but Ritson's constant forward movement and snappier punches allowed him to escape with a highly controversial split decision despite being out-landed in all categories (193-141 overall, 80-75 jabs, 113-66 power).

Vazquez earned those raw numerical gaps by being much more active (83.4 punches per round to Ritson's 45.3) and producing the much busier and slightly more successful jab (49.4 attempts/6.7 connects per round to Ritson's 25.9 attempts/6.2 connects per round) but Ritson was more accurate in all categories (26%-19% overall, 24%-13% jabs, 28.3%-27.7% power) and his connects were strong and easy to see -- factors that probably helped his cause beyond geography.

The CompuBox round-by-round breakdown of total connects -- relevant because clean punching is a key judging factor and because fights are scored round-by-round instead of in totality -- saw Vazquez prevail 9-3 but it appeared that two of the judges -- one of which was photographed looking at his cell phone during the action and the one who judged Ritson to be a winner by the widest margin -- placed heavier but less frequent connects over ring generalship and work rate. Scoring: 117-111, 115-113 Ritson, 116-113 Vazquez.

Ritson deserved nothing from that fight .
Not even a draw .
His coach was heard in between rounds saying its ok you have done enough and I was shocked at that and assumed if all was equal he would not get a points win .

Bloody hell - so looking at those punch stats (and I know you can’t use them to judge a fight) but Terry O Connor must have given Ritson rounds where he landed with 3 punches.

I will say that Smith comes across much better in interviews like this than when he’s growling away on commentary.

I've not seen the fight, but that picture of O'Connor looking at his phone during the round is shocking

I don't get the notion that O'Connor was looking at his scorecard (And clearly he isn't, with the phone in his hand...WTF!).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the scorecards are collected at the end of each round in title fights ???

In other words you judge one round at a time and you shouldn't keep a tally of how you have the bout scored.

Very few people do this (non-judges) but it's the only fair way to score a fight and can leave you surprised with final outcome sometimes.

Ya that's what I thought too, they collect the cards after each round. don't think he's got a card there anyway

Perhaps time for a regulator of some sort given it's clearly become a bit of a boys club with all sorts of potential for conflicts of interest?

Other than without Ritson boxing in the North East is dead! Boxing is a business

This isn't an isolated innocent. O'Conner has been a nightmare for years.

Surely there comes a point that the board has to make a decision about his ability, because for sure all they have done until this point is sit on their hands.

Or are we happy to say it's part of boxing. because I would suggest boxing hasn't a great future if we continue to ignore this type of thing.

I think Peter Fury raised a good point in that if O'Conner is a fan of the come forward style and awards rounds accordingly, then why is he even a judge - He's incapable of ever scoring a fight as an impartial judge should.

In his case he's been allowed to murder for years with impunity, he's had it very very easy, held to absolutely no standard at all

Almost as bad is the fact that Ritson seems to think he won the fight too
