In the strictest sense, Graham definitely deserved his shot, but could anyone begrudge Hagler swerving a routine defence against a man who always managed to pull defeat from the jaws of victory in his biggest fights, in order to fight SRL, one of the greatest fighters ever to live; the golden goose of the 80s; a man who had plagued Hagler for years?

When I was the president of amateur boxing in NY in the eighties, there
was this wild Brit fighting out of the Jerome Boxing Club in the Bronx.
He was a limited fighter who was a willing gunfighter and would step in
with the top talent we had anytime it was offered to him. While never
becoming a NY champion he was always fun to be around. When his mentor
and trainer, Adonis Torres, passed away the boy was devestated. He
apparently went back home to continue with what we thought was to be a
limited career. Of course he grew up to be Chris Eubank who I can tell
you has plenty of fans in the Big Apple.

Of course Graham deserved a title shot. In his last three fights he had defeated Charles Boston Mark Kraylor, and Ernie Rabatte. If ever someone deserved a title shot, it was Herol Graham in early in 1987.

No one should begrudge Hagler anything. A champion who took good care of business in his weight division shooting down one challenger after another...that's a proper champion.
It was just a shame for Graham and his supporters that when it was his turn for a shot that SRL came along and pushed in.
