THE DART THROWER
I've talked about Burke Emery's bar down the street from me. He calls the place Champs. He was the Canadian Light Heavy Champ. Trained some good fighters here in San Diego. Art Hafey for one.

A ways back Burke and his girlfriend Shirley bought the joint where Burke was tending bar and renamed it Champs. It's a neighborhood hangout. Not one of those sports bars. They don't serve food except for chili and hot dogs on Friday night. Darts is a big thing at Champs.

Burke had a long career. To look at his face it represents the 80 fights he engaged in not to mention his amateur bouts. I saw Burke fight a long time ago on TV from MSG. Burke was struggling to stick around. He fought a shooting star named Jose Torres. There are a ton of Puerto Rican fans in New York and I think they were all in attendance that night.

I remember they stopped the fight in the 5th round. Burke was a bleeder. I remember seeing red that night on the black and white screen. That was his last shot at something. After that it was a payday.

Burke is a real nice guy. He'll talk about boxing. Like when he was fighting out of Montreal. I guess he was tending bar in a rough neighborhood. He told me that after a night's binge, the French and the English tippers would get to calling each other names. After closing,Burke would lock the door to the bar and the frogs and the limeys would go toe to toe. Well ,word got out that this was happening. People wanted to watch the fisticuffs. I guess the two sides stopped punching for a while and talked things over. They started to charge admission!

Burke likes to play darts in his bar. He doesn't take to interviews much. When that biography of his fighter Art Hafey opened in LA. Burke didn't want to go.

They said last week Burke's girlfriend ,Shirley, had an accident and broke some ribs. She was in the hospital for a few days. They said Burke would wake up in the middle of the night and not see Shirley next to him. He called the police.

Boxing was good for Burke(he'd do it all over again he told me),but now he can't remember too well. Like I said,he sits in his bar and likes to play darts. Good for him. At least the darts don't hit back.
Did he fight Yvonne durrell or is he to young also you ever see ''The Heat'' James Kinchen I used to watch his fights in the 1980s also what about David lOVE

Don't think Burke fought Durelle. Used to watch "Heat" train up in the mountains near here at Sayonovitches gym. I thought he got robbed against Hearns. Saw David Love around two years ago. He's doing OK. Likes to play golf. Won against some big names:Briscoe ansd Watts. Lost some real stnkers.

I spend alot of time around these guys through work.
They have a very real code of honor when it comes to fighting and, of course plenty of it goes on.
When its over, its over. No hard feelings after the game. Its buisness. They never carry on off the ice afterwards. There is also big respect amongst themselves for guys who stand up and defend a team mate.
A guy catches his lunch in a fight, no big deal, he'll get another chance eventually.
I like the way these guys roll. They are tough guys and play with serious passion. They are gentlemen too.
Jackets, ties, when traveling and going to games. I like the way they carry themselves.
They are the closest thing to boxers in terms of personality that I know of. Thats a compliment.

:TU: I really like that.

Kirkland was a gifted boxer - he had the speed, reflexes and (crucially) the movement to trouble even an 'in shape' Duran, and that really is saying something. His nickname was "The Gifted One", actually.
After years of success in this country, his career eventually fizzled out in the 1990s and he 'lost it' for a while, turning into a tramp and then, worse, severely injuring himself in a fall from a balcony. This was in London. He recovered from his injuries and is now back home in Nottingham, living with his mum, which is the best place for him.

I remember the first time we had the Mexican channel here in Vegas was about 1983 or 1984 I couldn't understand anything they said which was ok because the only thing I was interested in was there boxing program they broadcast older fights from the 1970s I saw a replay of the Alexis Arguello vs Ruben Olivares as well as live fights I saw Albert Davila vs Enrique Sanchez where Sanchez was winning until it started pouring down rain and Davila proceeded to knock him out I think the name of the program was El mundo De boxeo did anyone else remember this channel :witzend:

I remember watching the fights on Mexican TV when I was living in TJ. You could also get the signal in San Diego. Most of the fights originated from the Arena Coliseo in Mexico City. This I think began in the mid 60's.

I guess in
Las Vegas we didn't get it till much later than California because we didn't have a big Mexican population until the 1980s :witzend:

Oh man that was great. That first guy that London hammered on took a good punch. I'm surprised he got up. Some of these guys didn't give a crap who they were hitting. They just felt like connecting. The cops jumped into the ring but they looked more scared than anything else. Remember the Golata-Bowe melee at the Garden back in the 90's?

This reminds me of . . .

The time that Brian London came to L.A. to fight Jerry Quarry. I was fifteen at the time, and an amateur stablemate of Quarry.
Jerry had his way with the lantern-jawed Brit who was taken out in the third round.
However, the best show of the night came after the fight ended. London's wife was upset at the outcome and started trouble at ringside.
She stood up, screamed obscenities, and then decided to go to blows with Jerry mother, Arawanda Quarry.
Luckily, the police intervened before the two women got close enough to trade blows.
Ma Quarry would have likely given Mrs. London the ass-whipping of her life.
Jerry's mom was a tough old broad, tougher than her sons.

Frank and I have both been in the house when the Quarry family has gone to blows at ringside, I should say the Quarry women.
I never saw Mrs. London fight, but do I believe she'd have fared well going one-on-one with Ma Quarry?
Nah :shame:

As far as Charlie and I are concerned, USC won the Super Bowl. How?
Well, Reggie Bush used to play for USC, and, he was in for a couple plays during the Super Bowl.
That's close enough for USC fans this year, that's about all we've got. :witzend:

Mickey has Alzheimer's, Hammer, but he still has friends (and plenty of money, of course). He was a 'big' promoter here, big enough to break into the US market.

CSAC: “Margarito Must Show Remorse!”
February 17, 2010 by Felipe Leon

According to a report by Tijuana newspaper Frontera, the California State Athletic Comission is willing to reinstate the boxing license of Antonio Margarito if he is willing to repent and show remorse for his attempt to use illegal handwraps in his last bout against Shane Mosley last year. Margarito lost the bout and his WBA welterweight title by KO.

“Next week we have a hearing, on February 22nd but Mr. Margarito must solicit for an appearance in front of the comission and for it to be scheduled in the agenda ten days prior,” George Dodd, the new executive director of the CSAC, stated. “As of right now, that would be impossible, our next meeting is in April.”

The Association of Boxing Comissions advised the state of Texas, where it was rumored that Margarito would make his return on the under card of Pacquiao-Clottey, to not license the “Tijuana Tornado” until he appeared before the California comission and ask for forgiveness.

“The comission could stretch the suspension if Margarito doesn’t appear to show remorse,” Dodd said. “We need to hear him out.”

I asked in TJ if Mexico would give Tony a license. They said the Mexican Commission is waiting for some state in the U.S.(preferably California) to reinstate him first.
