Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Michael Nunn vs Donald Curry
Nunn stops Curry in the 10th to retain his World Middleweight title, first half of the fight was close, Curry had about as much success as anyone had against Nunn up until thst point, when Nunn chose to fight, it gave Curry opportunities to land hard clubbing punches up close and he landed his fair share, when Nunn boxed on his toes he created a gap which Curry struggled to close, he couldn't cope with the southpaw style and length of Nunn who boxed and moved
In the 7th out of nowhere really a burst of punches had Curry backed up on the ropes amd taking a knee, he got up unsteady but recovered well until eventually Nunn began to get on top taking him aprt with crisp sharp punches and in the 10th Nunn go Curry oit of there, similar to the KD in the 7th it was more accumitive shots Nunn backed Curry up and was landing clean punches from all angles amd forced Curry down where it was stopped

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Good fight and win for Nunn. Curry was on the slide since the Lloyd loss. He lost to Rene Jacquot in 1989. Also he was like Marlon Starling in my opinion not a middleweight. Nunn was at the top of his game at this time.handsofstone wrote: ↑03 Feb 2021, 04:56 Michael Nunn vs Donald Curry

James Toney vs Michael Nunn
Toney KOs Nunn in the 11th to become World Middleweight champion, a masterclass from Toney who made Nunn look ordinary from the off, Nunn played into his hands by hanging mostly on the inside instead of using his height and reach to maybe try to move around the ring, he was tough and never stopped trying to duke it out but Toney was different gravy, didnt throw many conventional shots likes jabs or crosses but nailed Nunn all night with sweeping lefts and rights, uppercuts, making Nunn miss time and again and countering him with ease, great to watch
Toney began turning the screw in the 9th and Nunn was looking weary but still trying to fight back, in the 11th Toney put Nunn down heavily with a beautifully timed left hook on the inside, Nunn got up just but it shouldve beem stopped, Toney waded in and Nunn collapsed on top rope, Toney then finished him off with a big right to put Nunn down when the corner jumped in

- Lo & behold: A nascent underground misanthropic TwoTon masterclass boxer glee club!
Who knew TwoTon leading with his ugly mug qualifies as masterclass these days?
All I remember in the day was Nunn painting the masterpiece on the TwoTon mug until he wore hisself out and TwoTon minuscule offense finished Nunn off as has happen to Fancy Dans throughout history when they finally lose.
I have a standing challenge for years now to find me the masterclass fight of TwoTon over a credible opponent that has remained unfulfilled these many years...snickers...
Scoring here plus you can go to wiki to see what an oaf TwoTon was for this fight. Thanks for the comedy in these Corona Virus Panic days

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Michael Nunn vs Crawford Ashley
Nunn stops Ashley in 6 rounds to retain his World Super Middleweight title, dropping him 5 times en route, Nunn does as he pleased and controlles everything, walked the tall upright Ashley down and chopped away, Ashley came into the fight all 18 of his wins by KO but fought like a man who couldn't punch, no real belief in anything he done, Nunn was able to manhandle him around the ring, by the 4th it was just a case of when rather than if
In the 5th Nunn put Ashely down with a sweet left hand to the body, Ashley got up but was dona again from the same shot, the bell going before Nunn could finish the job, the 3 KD rule was in effect and thats how the end came, same punch for the 3 knockdowns in the 6th, thst left hand to the body, Ashley just couldnt take it, the last one coming with a second left in the round, brave Ashley kept getting up but Nunn a level above

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Regardless of how the Nunn and Jones fights turned out, (in the MN fight case, many think Nunn was winning and I have to say he arguably was even through I can't remember how I was scoring it) Toney will be a very deserving hall of famer.handsofstone wrote: ↑05 Feb 2021, 04:04Oh look heres Broughton again, his name suggests he knows what he's talking about but really he's a condescending cock who knows fvck all about boxing but studies dictionaries the wanker, you have a great way of ruining a thread pal, infact you might even be even aggreeing with us, ive no clue wtf you going on about everBroughtonRulesRefuge wrote: ↑04 Feb 2021, 19:14

I guess boxing careers are like a painting: the fighter makes it, then people look at it and decide whether they like the finished job or not. Again, many people think that Santos Laciar, Jose Luis Ramirez and three or four Puerto Ricans who are not yet in the IBHOF painted a beautiful master-piece but others think they did not do enough, just like in Hall of Famer cases like the Klitschko's, Mancini, Gatti, Walcott, Liston, McGuigan, etc. In Toney's case, I think he created a masterpiece.
So, he lost a few fights but so did Sugar Ray Robinson...even Muhammad Ali's masterpiece wasn't perfect!

This inspired me to look-up Crawford's ring career on Boxrec....
......and it most certainly ain't the easy, A-Side fighter road but there are some top wins lurking in there as well.
Crawford pretty much fought everyone out there and he had his moments

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
I saw Tyson-Scaff again.
Sammy Scaff wasn't that bad..he was 13-6 but had gone a few rounds with former world champion Tim Witherspoon recently and given him some (some as in fair, not as in some) fight before losing so this was considered a test for Tyson at the time.
I give Scaff credit for getting in there with his limited skills at that level, with the monster Tyson was at the time.
But what a knockout!!!

Yeah and he went 12 with the world champion...true, Hill wasn't Tommy Hearns or Mike Tyson punching wise but still, 12 rounds in a world title fight is 12 rounds in a world title fight. Ashley can say he went the distance!handsofstone wrote: ↑05 Feb 2021, 17:57Did he fight Mosley? Graciano Rocchigiani vs Michael Nunn
Rocchigiani beats Nunn by SD to win the vacant World Light Heavyweight title, i can see why people would think Nunn won because he fought well for 12 rounds, outworked Rocchigiani nearly every round and showed some flashy work, he boxed and moved and put together some eye catching combinations, trouble was a lot of his work was blocked and a lot of it was tippy tappy, he did mix the power up but maybe not enough
Rocchigiani landed the harder punches and was more accuate, he came forward soaked up whatever Nunn threw and came back with some big right hooks and left hands up close, he jerked Nunn's head back with some solid shots, Nunn was there fighting to the end so it looked a case of what you prefer

Jose Torres vs Bobo Olson
Torres KOs Olson in the 1st round of a non title Light Heavyweight fight, both men just feeling each other out for first couple minutes when Torres sunk in a hard left to the body which hurt Olson, Torres fired out both hands to the head forcing Olson down for the count, head shots responsible for the KO but all started with that body shot

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
It was in Germany as well.........Graciano Rocchigiani vs Michael Nunn
......sorry to repeatedly labour the point but in these years the German fighters and their powerful promoters got the rub of the green either with some properly stinky decisions or just getting the close points win that could have gone either way.
Some of those "Halle" fights and also the summer Football Stadium fights were great - they breathed new life into the European boxing scene - but there were also some lousy decisions and quite a few fights which were open to review.

Fernando Vargas v Oscar De La Hoya, great to watch this one again earlier, cracking fight. Vargas got inside early and bullied Oscar back to the ropes, tagging him with strong right hands to dominate the opening rounds. In a fight of 2 halves ODLH began to box beautifully from the centre of the ring, picking Vargas off at range while landing some fantastic straight rights as the younger man began to tire through R7/8. Classic De La Hoya left hook for the first knockdown and he was never letting Vargas off the hook from then on to close the show in the 11th. I miss HBO

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Sven Ottke vs Charles Brewer 1+2
Ottke gets a gift of a SD to become World Super Middleweight champion, looked a robbery IMO, Brewer was busier, worked behind the jab, dropped the right hand occasionally and worked up close, Ottke fought in bursts, threw in bunches, landed his fair share but wasnt busy enough for long spells whilst Brewer picked up the rounds or at least i thought he did, Ottke looked busted up at end as well
Ottke wins the rematch again by SD to retain his title and that was with Brewer being harshly deducted a couple of points, in the 6th for a low blow then again in the 10th for hitting on the break, it was a closer fight, messier than thr first one, Brewer wasnt as effective and although Ottke was busier this time, he wasnt landing much clean either, a poor fight, Ottke got on his bike down the stretch too knowing the point deductions secured the win
