Kern River Hatchery hosts Trout Fest on Saturday
April 24, 2010
Coinciding with the statewide opening of the trout-fishing season, the Kern River Hatchery will host its annual Trout Fest, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Plenty of fishy fun is planned for the day, with free admission to all activities.
Some of the events scheduled include fishing clinics, as well as cooking demonstrations featuring recipes and samples of grilled and pan-fried trout.
Activities for children include fish feeding, the chance to try to catch trout by hand, and various arts and crafts.
There will also be a fishing derby, with prizes awarded to anglers who catch the three heaviest trout.
Prior to the event, the Department of Fish and Game will stock an additional 10,000-plus pounds of rainbow trout in the Kern River.
The Kern River Fishing and Natural History Museums will also be open, offering visitors the chance to view an exhibit of early fishing tackle and peruse collections of the area's native plants and animals.
"In this community, opening day is a great cause for celebration," said Marvin Waters, Kern River Hatchery manager. "We are happy to be once again stocking the Kern River with trout."
The Hatchery is at 14400 Sierra Way (Mountain Hwy. 99), on the Kern River, one mile north of Kernville.

Do I envy him? While I may like to have a few more things in life, the price to acquire them seems to be far too high. I could not imagine being in the spotlight that many celebrities and their families have to endure. They can't possibly live a normal life as we know it. While not feeling too sorry for someone like Kevin, I would be very reluctant to change places with him.

Chuck . . . He is a guy who has done what few "super stars" have been able to accomplish. He made the switch from leading man to director & producer (shades of Clint Eastwood & Michael Landon) and it was a seemless transition. He is an "actor's director", a director that gets the most from his players. He also is well liked by all on both sides of the camera. He has paid his dues and deserves his accolades. His success was no accident, or the product of BS.
A freind of mine did his lighting on "A River Runs Thru It", and he thinks the world of Kevin. That says a lot to me.

I'm enjoying the info Tom has put up regarding Jim Jeffries, and especially how it points out that Jeff grew up in L.A.
I was aware of his history living in Burbank after he was champ, but never heard anybody focus on the fact he was basicly a product of Southern Cal (despite his being born elsewhere).
He is one who rightfully should have been a CBHOF inductee early on.
Thanks to you and Frank Baltazar for making this a reality.
I was aware that Jim Jeffries was not only a great boxing champ, but one helluva all-round athlete, that could run a 100 yards in 10 sec. flat.
I personally think Jim might have been the best all-around athlete to ever hold the heavyweight title. He seemed to succeed effortlessly at everything athletic that he ever tried.
Had he been born in 1975 instead of 1875, I suspect he would have been an All-Pro NFL linebacker now awaiting his induction into the Football Hall of Fame. He never really liked boxing too much, but only boxing and baseball were sports at which you could make any money in those days. Jim was a better boxer than baseball player. Today, this big rugged fellow would have been a proto-type linebacker for an NFL team.

I have been trying since I got your e-mail message to send you these fishing pictures. I'm going to try again - this time a few at a time. If you look don't like them or if there are too many, don't download them all. You won't hurt my feelings. At this point, I'm just on a damn mission!!
I took these at Roaring River State Park near Cassville, Missouri. The state park is also a hatchery, and they release about 500 rainbow trout into the river every day. The river and hatchery are fed by an underground stream that emerges from a cave. The cave is reportedly about 250 feet deep. It really a very beautiful place. This month, Linda and I brought a home about 15 miles away as a retirement/vacation home. My mother grew up in Cassville, and my Dad about 10 miles away in Purdy, Missouri. My dad learned how to fly fish in those streams and I have lots of memories being there with my parents, grandparents, family reunions, etc.
More to follow
Thanks for posting those, Frank. If any of you guys like to flyfish, come on out to SW Missouri. You can stay at my house. We only live about 45 minutes from Branson, and between my house and Branson is some of the most scenic driving you'll ever see. We are also within 45 minutes of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, a lovely town that perched on the side of the Ozark Hills and mountains. My parents eloped to Eureka Springs in 1951. As we say down in Barry County, "
Y'all come!"

I'll be at the Citizen's Bank Arena tonight watching the Arreola vs Adamek fight. "I'll be going with Ed Hernandez and his sons, Ed Jr. and Patrick.
I have no real expectations for for Arreola in the long run but he is a local fighter and so I'll support him.
Here's hoping for an honest and entertaining fight.

The Six Man Tournament . . .
Well tonight Showtime features another episode of a tournament that makes no sense to me.
You have these six boxers fighting each other to determine the best in the world. Not a bad concept, but some really mediocre talent.
I still haven't got a grasp on how a fighter gets pulverized and flattened by one fighter, then comes back to defeat another boxer, who then comes back to KO the guy who KOed the guy who KOed him???
It's like Al beats Joe, Joe beats George, George beats Sam, and then Sam beats Al. Who in the Hell is the best?
ANSWER: Who knows?
Guess it depends on what night of the week they are fighting. Considering what I have seen to date, they are all a bunch of bums.
Andre Ward is one of America's "bum" representative. Then you have Carl Froch, a bum from Great Britain, and Mikkel Kessler proves that Germany can produce as great a bum as the rest, etc. etc.
What a piece of crap tournament!
I can't sit thru too many rounds of this garbage. I start out wide awake and soon my wife is waking me to ask if she can turn the channel.
Tonight, Froch will meet Kessler and I know exactly how to prevent being put to sleep before my bedtime. Instead of tuning in to SHOWTIME, I'm gunna pull a couple of DVD's off the shelf that Frank sent me and think about better days.
In fact, I just may slip in a DVD of my favorite boxing movie, "The Ring". At least I know I will be watching boxing as I like it.

Randy, be sure to send my regards to Ed Hernandez and his sons. Hope you guys have a great night.
They are going to replay it later on HBO so I'll catch it then.
Chris Arreola may be big, fat bum, but he's an L.A. bum, so like you, I'll support him.
I know all about L.A. bums, I was once one myself.

You know I really think Arreola is a good fighter, but he is not willing to pay the price of getting himself into top shape, vs Klitchsko he showed tremendous heart in taking a beating, just a shame a guy who with the division the way it is won't get in good condition.

Arreola should win tonight, I think that Adamek is the better fighter of the two, but he is just to small for Arreola....

I watched both fights yesterday on HBO, the only fighter who I was somewhat impressed by was Angulo, I think that all these Eastern European heavy's are a bore in every way no personality just very robot like, as far as Arreola the guy will never get his self in shape and I think he should pack it in.

Yes, I did see the fights last night and nobody impressed me, the Europeans are just "one-two, one-two" kind of fighters, Angulo didn't have anybody in front of him, Adamek was the best of the night, I agree with you that "Fat Boy" should pack it in...

I agree, Frank. Angulo? We've discussed him before. One-dimensional, easy to hit. When Gwen Adair introduced me to Angulo at the 2008 WBHOF banquet, I looked at his eyes and he had deep scars above both. At the time I think he had less than a dozen pro fights. Even in this weak era he's not championship material. He's the kinda guy that we would see in six rounderrs at the Olympic, stepping stones for guys on the path to main events.
If I have no reason to favor a boxer, I'll generally support the Southern Cal fighter. With the first round less than half over, I was wanting Adamek to knock him out.
The Europeans? They retain their title as the most boring boxers on the planet.

And adding to the title confusion of today . . .
2 Diamond Belt Champions?
By Karl Freitag
WBC President Jose Sulaiman, upon hearing that the bout between Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley will not be for Mosley’s WBA welterweight title, has announced that the WBC will offer the WBC Diamond Belt to the Mayweather-Mosley winner and be recognized as WBC Diamond world champion, being certain that if Mayweather wins he’ll proudly accept the belt. “In history, there has been only one world champion who has won the WBC Diamond Belt, the idol of the Philippines and the world Manny Pacquiao,” said Sulaiman in a statement. “The winner of Mayweather vs. Mosley also deserves to be crowned as WBC Diamond world champion.” If the WBC is not allowed to present the belt in the ring, they will do so in the locker room of the winner.
