Don Johnson . . .
Hey Frank, I think we've discussed this featherweight in the past, another globe-trotting contender like so many we knew.
I regret that I didn't get to see Don Johnson fight in L.A. His career spanned more than twenty years, mostly campaigning out of the country to get fights. Like Dwight Hawkins, and others we know, this guy was in many ways "to good for his own good". I know he fought on the undercard of Davey Moore-Sugar Ramos card at Dodger Stadium in early 1963.
Any memories of this fighter?

Mike Stewart . . .
Frank, during the mid 60's I remember Saturday mornings very well.
It was on Saturday mornings between 9am-to-noon that the Main Street Gym was packed .
It was packed with boxers, packed with energy. The place had a beat, a steady rhythmatic pulse, puntuated by bells and buzzers.
From early 1965 to 1976, my Saturday mornings were spent at the Main Street Gym.
Boxers make friends with other boxers, and there was this young junior amateur named Mike Stewart.
Mike was a skinny little kid, maybe ten years old? He'd show up at the gym every Saturday morning.
Howie Steindler let juniors, such as Stewart and I, workout before 10am.
Mike Stewart was trained by Sammy Saunders.
Sammy was an ex-pro turned manager, amateur promoter, etc. I liked Sammy, he was soft spoken, had class.
I remember that Mike Stewart's mother would walk her son into the gym, turn him over to Saunders, and then perch herself in the bleachers where she'd watch her son workout. His mother was a beautiful lady.
Stewart would grow up, as a teen he was a member of the 1973 L.A. Golden Gloves team that went to Boston under head coach, Frank Baltazar. That was about the last time I spoke with Little Mike Stewart. He would later turn pro, and below is his record.
I knew him from the gym, and Frank coached Stewart and saw him at his best as an amateur.
Frank, does anything standout in your mind relating to Mike Stewart?

Arreola, a boxer with no heart . . .
Just listened to a replay of Chris Arreola's post-fight interview.
I realize that one can't expect a boxer to be a scholar, however . . .
Chris Arreola is one stupid man. Dumb, no class, NO HEART!
It takes heart to dedicate one's self to the conitioning necesary for boxing success.
A bum who's willing to take shots like a punching bag for twelve rounds does not have heart.
Arreola also has no brain. Good fighters are smart. Smart is as smart does.
After listeing to Arreola "Mutha F*ck" his way thru another interview, it occured to me he was perfectly fine with his loss.
Thie guy really didn't care if he looked like a dog. I was happy to hear his "homies" didn't buy tickets to the match.
What does that tell you?

WBC President Jose Sulaiman, upon hearing that the bout between Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley will not be for Mosley’s WBA welterweight title, has announced that the WBC will offer the WBC Diamond Belt to the Mayweather-Mosley winner and be recognized as WBC Diamond world champion, being certain that if Mayweather wins he’ll proudly accept the belt. “In history, there has been only one world champion who has won the WBC Diamond Belt, the idol of the Philippines and the world Manny Pacquiao,” said Sulaiman in a statement. “The winner of Mayweather vs. Mosley also deserves to be crowned as WBC Diamond world champion.” If the WBC is not allowed to present the belt in the ring, they will do so in the locker room of the winner.
Diamond championship belt.
Heres the result of all these titles in belts. Ready for it?...here it comes...nobody gives a fu.k anymore.
Suilaman with that explanantion sounds like a carnival barker. A song a dance man.
Last night I watched an old Clint Eastwood movie on amc. "The Outlaw Josey Wales".
In it, there is a traveling salesman type who keeps trying to sell this miracle liquid solution to everyone he comes across. When he meets up with Eastwood, he tries his routine on Clint telling him all of its fictitious uses.Eastwood responds by spitting tobacco all over the guys white jacket and asking him if it removes tobacco stains.
Suilaman reminds me of that salesman.

Chuck . . . I met Carlos Alcibar at the Lincoln Heights Gym a few years ago. He was training amateurs there at the time. I'd go in to workout and sometimes used the facility to work with people I was training. Carlos and I became friends, and we duscussed his fights with both Stewart and Albert Davila, whom he faced in a ten rounder at the Olympic. Carlos was in basicly good health, but having problems with his eyesight as a result of detached retina suffered during his career.

An Award For Jose Suilaman . . .
I agree, Brian. He's a low end piece of work that can take credit for playing a big role in the overall destruction of boxing.
When I was with the WBHOF, several geniouses came up with the idea to present Suilaman with some type of special award.
I was amazed and asked, why? I think the WBHOF President at the time was trying to kiss his ass for some reason.
I suggested we present him with a bag of manure. That's about all he contributes to boxing.
We could have called it, "The WBHOF Diamond Bull Sh*t Award".
Why not? It fits.

Yes, I did see the fights last night and nobody impressed me, the Europeans are just "one-two, one-two" kind of fighters, Angulo didn't have anybody in front of him, Adamek was the best of the night, I agree with you that "Fat Boy" should pack it in...
I agree, Frank. Angulo? We've discussed him before. One-dimensional, easy to hit. When Gwen Adair introduced me to Angulo at the 2008 WBHOF banquet, I looked at his eyes and he had deep scars above both. At the time I think he had less than a dozen pro fights. Even in this weak era he's not championship material. He's the kinda guy that we would see in six rounderrs at the Olympic, stepping stones for guys on the path to main events.
If I have no reason to favor a boxer, I'll generally support the Southern Cal fighter. With the first round less than half over, I was wanting Adamek to knock him out.
The Europeans? They retain their title as the most boring boxers on the planet.
I didn't see the fight. But the news accounts I read indicated that it was pretty good. True?
