Camping with Willie

Sometime in the early 1970’s, my brother-in-law Willie, my sister Annie, their kids, Connie, our kids and I were camping at Independence , Ca’s Grays Meadows campgrounds. We had been there a few days and now it was Saturday, the day before we were heading back home and we had run out of beer, Willie puts his arm around me and said.
“Brother-in-law, how about we go into town and get some more beer?”
The campgrounds are seven miles west of town up a steep grade up the side of the mountain, so I said to Willie.
“Lets wait till tomorrow, we’ll stop and get some beer on our way home”
Willie was dying for a beer, so he wasn’t to happy with me. I decided to go for a walk around the campground, said hello to a couple of guys, after we talked for a few minutes they invited me to have a beer with them, I accepted and sat down with them to talk and drink a beer with them, soon Willie sees me and starts walking back and forth in front of the guys camp site hoping they would also invite him to a beer, they never did.
Every time Willie walked in front of the camp site I would take a drink of my beer and smile at him, you could tell he was getting piss. After I drank that beer with the guys, I got up and thank them for the beer, walked up to Willie and put my arm around him and said.
“Lets go to town”

You're a good brother-in-law.

Me? I would have put my arm around Willie's shoulder and asked, "I wonder why those guys didn't offer you a beer?"

That's too bad Frank. It's hard to lose friends. But it sounds like you have some great memories.

Especially at such a young age, Willie was only 38 years old when pancreatic cancer took him, but he left me with some great memories. I was always picking on him, the joke was alway on him, but he would just roll with the punches, go along with the program, that was Willie.

There was trouble at the Khan-Malignaggi weigh-in involving Khan's lovely fans. Let me tell you about these fans. Khan was once given a real war by an unsung Scot by the name of Willie Limond, a great little pro. Limond was a huge outsider going into the fight but fought tooth and nail with Khan in the early rounds and even dropped Khan in the sixth round. Khan rallied and put Limond down himself a round later. Limond, now badly marked up, continued to take stick and was pulled out by his corner at the end of the eighth. He was through. When the M.C. announced that Limond had retired with a broken jaw, Khan's fans cheered. It was one of the most disgusting non-boxing responses I have ever had the misfortune to hear. Real boxing fans would have given Limond an ovation for his effort.

Bennie . . . People are so lost today. I guess after growing up in front of a TV's, Play Stations, computors and everything lacking in humanity, they have no idea about reality. People are not getting smarter with time, they are becoming stupid. I'm anxious to get a look at Amir Khan. I've seen him working with Freddie Roach and he is said to have power and a weak chin. I'm not so concerned about his chin as I am his heart. I may be wrong since I have never seen this guy up close, but something gives me the impression when the going gets tough, he'll look for a way that doesn't involve fighting back? This is jusy my opinion and I would be happy to have reason to change it. Maybe I'll get that reason tonight. I would love to see Khan put Paul Mali-whatever out of action for good.

"No honey, wait!, did I just call you honey?".
"Yes you did"
"Well I take it back"
"The honey or the no on another cup of coffee?"
"The honey of course"
And here I was looking for the start of a nice day...LOL!!

Same here Rick, I'm not much of a Paulie Malinagi fan. Despite Khan's KO by Breidis Prescott last year, Khan showed a lot of heart by getting back in the saddle again, and quickly too. I think that answers some questions about his heart. Paulie is not a big puncher but he is foxy and will make a fight of it on his terms. This will be a great test for Khan.

As for today's fight fans, I was at the Arreola vs Adamek fight last month at the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontaro. The Arena didn't look half full. Arreola's fans maybe thinning out. There was a sizable group of Adamek fans, in the crowd, Poles dress in red and white. Enthusiastic but polite fans. Arreola's fans were rude and crude and talked a lot of thrash to Adameks fans, and not jokingly. It was embarrassing. Where is the sportsmanship of the past? Arreola's fans outnumbered Adamek fans about10 to 1 but the Poles showed some grit. They didn't take any sh*t.

The Arreola vs Adamek fight? Wasn't even worth writing about, at least from an Arreola point of view. His fans should have walked out with their jackets over their heads in shame. I went to the fight not so much an Arreola fan, I have no expectations of him, but as a supporter of a local fighter. About halfway through the fight I was hoping to see Adamek knock Arreola on his ass.

Speaking of people not getting any smarter, police officers are no longer able to use there own judgment, a clerk at 7 11 is not allowed to use there own judgment, case in point I was in line to buy gas yesterday, a guy is ahead of me who turned 21 during the Eisenhower administration gets asked for I.D when he wants to purchase beer, the bottom line is the employer doesn't want to let the employee be human, he wants an obedient German shepherd who can't think for himself. :witzend:

Paul . . . Your post is right on. Just yesterday my wife went to the Van Nuys court house to pay a traffic ticket. The place is usually packed with people but when she arrived, there was nobody in line or waiting. She went to the front and saw a clerk at a window. She approached the lady and said, "I want to pay ticket." The woman looked her and in an irritated voice said, "You have to take a number." Monica was confused, "But there is nobody else here." The lady shook her head and repeated, "Take a number if expect to be helped." Monica took a number, and then sat down on a bench. A moment later she hears the lady announce, "Number 57 . . . " Monica was number 57. She stood up, went to the window, and the lady helped her. What in the hell was that about???? :witzend: :witzend: :witzend:

Hap Navarro . . .

Exchanged e-mail today with our friend, Hap Navarro.
Hap's putting together his book on boxing, one he's been working on for awhile.
He's also a likely interview for the Latino Boxing documentary being produced by Alan Swyer.
Hap's doing well, feeling his 91 years at times. His computor is on the fritz, making posting a challenge.
I know he has hundreds of pages, things the reveal the true history thru the eyes of a legendary personality.
The book will provide a lot of dialogue for this thread. :TU:

Amir Khan vs. Dimitri Salita . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmxYvczJ ... re=related

I realize Kahn's opposition wasn't top shelf in this one, however, he didn't wait to jump on the guy when he hurt him.
I liked that about him, he tried to finish him when the opportunity was there. And he did.

Fights over-Khan wins-stops Malignaggi in 11th.
Looked like the fans got into it at the Garden theatre in the background.Typical nowadays.

I can't help but think that these same fans today which are causing trouble are the same blokes who are rooting for the MMA fighters on their telecasts.
Right now I am so glad that NY State and Athletic Commissioner Melvina Lathan is sticking to her guns in not recognizing MMA in NY right now.

Depending on how the draw on the local boxing cards here will depend on if they mix the two eventually for an event. Much discussion but the local cards in the Metropolitan area are doing well. Staving off the MMA right now.

Cheers to Freddie Roach on calling his shot for Amir Khan.

Khan simply emulates what Ricky Hatton did to "Tap Tap" Malignaggi a few years ago. He needs to fight a puncher to gain respect from the British fans, sick to death of him fighting non-punchers since Prescott.
