Hey Glyn, I was just thinking about Maurice Hope yesterday. We were talking about 'perfect shots' in the office and looked up Benitez fainting to the body and then letting the arcing right hand go to the head. That expression on Wilfred's face a couple of seconds later says it all. What a natural Benitez was!

Mo is a bit forgotten Ed, isn't he. And I don't think he got the credit he was due at the time, either — that seems to be backed up by the relative lack of photos the agencies have of his career. More than enough to carry a good spread —and thankfully they do have the Benitez fight! — but considering the level Mo fought at, I would have expected a few more fights to have been covered.

And King — groom him fella, groom him While in Lloyd territory, don't think I've ever read a feature on Marlon Starling, who I loved. Did you come across anything you could recommend by any chance?

I've a decent article about Starling from KO mag, it's a fairly lengthy interview from before the time he fought Nunn. It's pretty interesting.

I seem to remember him sat on his hotel bed the morning after losing to Vaca. I think he was asked why he'd lost and he pointed straight to camera 'boxers, don't fall in love!'

Ta King and ta Orb — that Nunn fight was one of the oddest looking ever, Starling looked tiny in comparison to him. Damned good fighter though, loved 'the stamp'.

Very good piece ran on Mo Hope in BN awhile back, the last 2 paragraphs, where he describes meeting up with Benitez all those years later, are a killer.

re: Honeyghan, I can't remember where the quote was from, but it may have been him on Radio 5 the day Dando was shot and they had to say bye to him in the studio (shame, it was shaping up to be very interesting) and he said that he bumped into Curry years later in Atlantic City and he looked down and out (beard, scruffy clothes) and he goes up to Don and says hey Don, how you doing...and Curry sighs and says "you killed my career man" and shuffles away, dejectedly.

If Glyn is still around; I'd really like to read more about Wally Swift Snr; his name crops up time and time again in the old timers bit in BN; he seems to have fought everyone around and was a real craftsman. Could you please do something? There are lots of absolutely fantastic British fighters that hardly anyone knows anything about. Please educate the uneducated

I heard that story but I think Curry had to be pointed out to Lloyd as he was barely recogniseable.

With regards Bosnia, I was a 23-year-old reporter sent there to interview and spend time with the International Police Task Force.

The commander for the Sarajevo region, which is where I was based for 10 days, was from Rhyl (Payne will love that!) and he invited me.

I travelled all over the country speaking to officers from all over Wales and the north west and came back to write up stories for the local dailies and regionals, including the MEN, Daily Post Visitor Series and the Liverpool Echo.

The IPTF was policing the country after the war. It was an amazing place, an experience I'll never forget.

I wasn't allowed to walk on the grass as there were still landmines everywhere....saw some serious shit while I was out there, the people were really messed up, understandably.

sod the reporting....i was in Bosnia in 92 and 97......out on the choppers going to incidents, picking up bits of people...not much fun but very rewarding, at least thats one medal i can wear with pride......where is spud when i need his military input !!!!!!!.......

facinating insight glyn....i had heard lloyd could be as enigmatic on the subject of interviews as his ring style was.........all these years later a definite mystique about the man........he's around....just about.....but totally unlike his mate tyson u dont really get too many interviews with the man beyond the odd quote every time a british fighter takes on a formidable american champ in the us.

im really looking forward to the maurice hope feature....of course benitez took him out.....for a long time lloyd was like an english benitez to me, that radar like defense and build....i loved the way he took out gianfranco rosi with one punch in italy it was one of the most brutal knockouts i saw as a boy.....i remember in the late 80s in the playground people did honeyghan impersonations .........i wrote to lloyd on his old eye of the tiger website back in late 2001 or early 2002 i told him he was like benetiz to me when his boxing was at its finest but that with respect this new star ricardo mayorga who i saw fight six head leis twice reminded me so much of lloyd circa 87-89 when he was in slugger mode....i thought honeyghan might be angry but he seemed to like it....he said mayorga was a good fighter and directed me to his pay vd channels on his website.

A jailhouse interview with michael nunn id like to see that.

Marlon starling was an good talker i have the ko interview he did in 1989 he really hated honeyghan. Marlon is a limo driver now and still does some training in the gym. He really looks old tho his speech is noticeably slow.

Other guys who would make for good features.....dennis andries......jawaid khaliq....heck henry cooper should have a small column like farhood and bunco do.....henrys take on things was always good to read....!

I said to Glyn that Mike McCallum would be fascinating for a longish interview. Once you get past the bitterness, he is an interesting character.

Another who I find interesting but is probably terribly dull is Carl Thompson. I remember SKY going round his house for a cup of tea and he seemed like a nice guy but not the most interesting of interview subjects which is a shame because he was rarely in a dull fight.

Scrap Iron Ryan seemed a "character" too, I got the impression SKY always heavily edited any interview he did.

I would like to read an indepth interview on Bob Foster i.e. what he has been up post-boxing, his views on boxing/boxers now and a look back at his brilliant career.

Carl's nice guy was what I think help sell him to the public. When he went, possibly quite rightly, a little bit rantish around the Eubank fights ("why don't I get the credit") I think people went a bit off him, and then he tried to out Eubank Chris with the ring entrance for the rematch with a kind of dance.

You could tell Carl wasn't comfortable, and probably didn't even like moaning.

Yeah, the way Nelson and Ingle continually goaded him was a bit off. I remember after the 2nd Eubank fight them talking over his post-fight interview and him getting pretty annoyed "will you let me speak". Aye..that dance...sheesh....fully put paid to the myth.
