i dont know, like if mikey beat up loma, who is small at lw, i still think thats very limited in what it tells us about how hes doing vs a big strong top 147 pounder like spence

If he fought and beat Loma it would tell us more about Garcia's level.
We can only wonder if he's just a very very good fighter, or a true elite, potential #1 P4P boxer?
Maybe an elite lightweight/junior welter can beat Spence.
But can a very very good fighter do it?
It wasn't totally shocking to see a proven icon like Duran move up and beat Leonard (and I'm aware that Duran had fought several welters beforehand).
But few would expect Garcia to pull it off. He hasn't yet clearly shown that he's a great fighter.

It would make a better case for what he can do/how great he is just like Floyd triumphing Corrales gave us a glimpse of his potential for greatness. Just like if Spence beat the guys I mentioned, no one would pick Mikey, but there's still question marks about Spence also.

Lomassiah v Mikey was never happening. Can we at least give credit where credit is due that a modern day boxer is willing to take the toughest of challenges to determine his legacy?
If Mikey wins this fight by anything but obvious robbery, he will have clearly proven that he is a great fighter, and he will assume the P4P #1 position without question.

Mikey could win in defeat if he does better than expected, but that is the best I am expecting from him. I'm not going against the favorite here. I picked safely, Spence by decision.

lol at how many people think Garcia can win this fight. He’s TOO SMALL. And not fast enough to negate the size-strength difference. Spence will win and it won’t be very close. Garcia’s ceiling is 140. Not the cream of the crop of 147. Sure there are several guys at 147 he can beat. Their names aren’t Spence or Crawford.

Least he's giving it a go.
But your right, there are better fights he could have chased. I originally thought he might be cashing out.

Can anyone speak to “comparisons” in history to this fight?
Is it more/most like:
Spinks vs Tyson
Curry vs McCallum
Armstrong vs Robinson
Rigondeaux vs Crawford
Trinidad vs Hopkins
For some odd reason I also thought of Tzyz vs Judah.... not that it had to do with weight, but more skill set/power/chin... but really mixed.

... although methinks outcome WILL NOT be comparable:
:very difficult fight in history to judge vs 2/3 round stoppage!

Duran vs Leonard?
Top lightweight vs elite welterweight.
Duran however had fought several bouts at welterweight prior to the Leonard bout, including a decision over ex champ Carlos Palomino.

Sure it can happen, but they also believed that about Hagler Duran. Hagler was knocking everyone out/being avoided and many thought he'd do that to Duran also. Duran started out as a lightweight fighting a middleweight. Garcia started at featherweight and he's fighting a welterweight.

Duran was a fighter for the ages, however.
No one is yet putting Garcia on that lofty pedestal.

Chin of Garcia vs chin of Duran..... THAT is a stretch, forget about skills.
Aside from that... didn’t bring that up, simply because of “GREATNESS vs VERY, VERY GOOD””:

You're probably right. Honestly, I don't know what my point was, but it made sense at the time
Garcia-Spence is a budget Hagler-Leonard.

That even makes my point even more. The weight Garcia and Spence started at are 21lbs away, even less as amateurs. Duran started 40lbs away from career 160 Hagler.

To get up there with the likes of Duran both Garcia and Spence will need to demonstrate similar levels of being at home inside a boxing ring that Duran often displayed.
I don't think he was remotely scared of anyone he faced.
