I'm not sure it was a wise move changing to Buddy McGirt and trying to get him to change Whyte's style now, if anything the more cautious approach made the fight harder for him.

I don't think the plan was for Whyte to scrape past someone like Franklin.

Joshua‘s confidence is shot
I don’t see that, if his opponent is anyone other than Usyk.
I do, but he’d still wipe the floor with Whyte no bother
So would the “shot confidence” claim only apply to certain opponents, or is AJ just battling self doubt no matter who he is up against?

It’s a confusing one for me, as Joshua certainly didn’t appear to lack confidence the last time against Usyk, who had soundly outboxed and rattled him in their first encounter.

I’m not sure exactly who / what Joshua is supposed to be living in fear of from a boxing perspective, other than the likelihood of another frustrating 12 round boxing lesson from Usyk one day in the future.

Didn’t look confident against Ruiz 2
Didn’t look confident against Pulev
Didn’t look confident against Usyk 1
Looked better but still not very confident against Usyk 2, then cried in the press conference

Not sure how much more evidence you need tbh :maybe: Compared to Joshua’s performances prior to Ruiz 1, it’s night and day.

:TU: He was supposed to look good against the perfect comeback opponent - a pillow fisted blobby with an unbeaten record.
Instead he got a hometown decision and looked like crap.

Feel like I’ve said this a thousand times.

Hard to call a close fight a robbery but I had Franklin 115-113.

It wouldn’t be a problem if these type of fights do go either way but they never do. They go to the fighter who will make more money for everyone is their next fight having won, every single time.

And that’s why the sport loses credibility by the week.

When is it that Whyte was supposed to look so good? Against old Chisora, ancient and covid compromised Povetkin?

I’ve never seen it. He’s went life and death with any live bodies or been knocked clean out.

I watched the fight. Couple of fun moments but a real grind to get through. Joe Joyce takes the pair of them out by the middle of the fight. AJ does too.

You can give it 115-113 either way no problems or a draw. Or maybe slightly wider to Franklin.

The problem, and the reason this stinks, is the two 8-4 scorecards for Whyte. When you have 2 judges who were always going to side with Whyte, then Franklin always needed a very wide win or a stoppage.

And that's absolutely horrible.

I had Franklin by two rounds, but a comfortable 2 rounds if you know what I mean.

Horse racing and Boxing both have a handicap system. All away fighters have to go into the fight knowing they're 3 rounds down as soon as the first bell rings.

I think you can forgive the Ruiz rematch performance given the shock defeat the first time. Joshua surely just wanted to get the win and get back on track, first and foremost.

Pulev? He looked absolutely fine to me in that one.

Against Usyk, if anything wasn’t Joshua over confident going in the first fight?

And it’s hardly a crime to cry after losing another fight to Usyk, given that you’ve turned up in arguably the best shape of your life.

This shot confidence thing strikes me as something some people want to be true, rather than is.

He won both of them comfortably, so whatever he looked like to you didn't matter. I thought he looked nervous during some of the ring walks but looking confident is no guarantee of success.

After that if the intention is Joshua v Whyte again it will be a hard sell, 2 boxers past their prime going for another pay day. If it happens Joshua will win easily but not a fight I'd shell out 30 quid for on PPV

well actually nowhere near a KO - IMHO
Franklin probably surprised many Uk fans - quick feet for a big guy as well as fast punch combos 4/5 at a time but he clearly lacked the power to properly hurt Whyte , he wass tagging him but not enough to cause any real damage .

100 % on the confidence point.
Unfortunately AJ will always attract some negative comments from certain quarters no matter what he does or doesnt do .

Dillian Whyte Defends Performance: “I Went Into The Fight With A Biceps Injury, Chest Infection”

“I never get no credit,” said Whyte on Behind The Gloves. “I fought a young undefeated guy. I went into the fight with a biceps injury, chest infection.”

“The main thing with me was mentally. You’ve seen fighters lose lately. It’s not easy.”

I thought it was about a draw but was content that Franklin did well enough to land on TV once again. Apparently he is a guy with a family and unspectacular 9-5 job.
