Sure, if you know you absolutely won't be able to hold your own in an interaction then maybe it makes sense to abandon ship.

But personally I don't think that's a good look for a promoter. A big part of being a promoter is being an unflappable salesman. Running to avoid awkward situations is not on brand.

its my opinion he was faced with severe problems.

i met him at him at Ricky Hattons funeral and had a drink and chat with him and thought he was a arrogant pr@ck and i told him as much which he laughed at.

But i had alreadu started my extensive research on the sky contract and the court case with which was clear from the court papers he had a difficult time.

Mate with all due respect - and I mean this in the nicest possible way, because it seems you're well known here and people like you /have time for you - you really don't have a handle on any of this stuff.

I thought this thread was odd when it started, and then in the end you revealed what lay behind it and how you'd decided to get involved and started messaging all these different promoters etc offering your services.

You can't really be spinning up these kind of threads when all you've got to on is bits of hearsay from people you're messaging. The way this thread was presented was like it was some inside track on Sky future.

Court papers = each side telling their own story. You can't use that as the basis of anything. Bias is baked into court statements lol.

I know you mean well but maybe focus on getting involved with fight night ops and floor manager stuff rather than trying to get involved with /present as a politics and dealmaking person.

Eddie Hearn fires back at Ben Shalom, claims Boxxer fighters are phoning him

Eddie Hearn has stepped up his war of words with Ben Shalom by claiming that Boxxer fighters are personally phoning him in a bid to jump ship.

The Matchroom boss and Shalom have been going back and forth for months now but things intensified over the weekend when Boxxer’s first show on the BBC clashed with Matchroom’s event in Birmingham.

Shalom claimed Hearn is ‘insecure’ in his position and labelled him a ‘50-year-old who works for his dad’, in reference to Barry Hearn, the 77-year-old founder of Matchroom. During an interview with The Ring, Shalom also said Hearn was not fit to 'lace his boots’.

Now Hearn, 46, has fired back at Shalom and suggested that Boxxer fighters continue to contact him personally about moving to Matchroom.

On Saturday night, Ben Whittaker boxed for the first time under the Matchroom banner after spending his first 10 professional fights with Boxxer and Hearn says more could follow.

“I’m never one to say that I’m not going to give him any oxygen by responding,” Hearn told The Ring on Wednesday. “I will always clap back and have my say.

“I get his strategy because I would do the exact same thing, I really would because nothing that ever comes out of his mouth is going to be exciting or entertaining unless it’s having a go at me. I don’t blame him.

“But in the meantime, fighters that work with him continue to phone me and say ‘is there any way I can join Matchroom?’ So he should just focus on pushing his own fighters.”

In contrast to Shalom, Hearn has never had a broadcast deal on terrestrial television but the Matchroom boss does think his opposite number is in danger of ‘haemorrhaging hundreds of thousands of pounds on every show’ of his new BBC deal.

“This isn’t a rights deal with real money,” said Hearn of Boxxer on the BBC. “But it’s still a good platform.

"The difficulty will be that you're going to be haemorrhaging hundreds of thousands of pounds on every show. So, it's how many investors you can keep coming to fund the company? That's the challenge.

“When you're just losing money week after week, show after show, that money will dry up. So, I don't believe they're going to do a show a month like they have claimed. The biggest problem they've got is virtually every fighter of note that they represent wants to leave.

“That means they have to get them out in big fights and they're expensive. It doesn't take a genius to know that the purses that those fighters are on versus the revenue that's generated on a BBC show, it just doesn't work.

“You've got to be a little bit cutthroat. Sometimes you have to let fighters go that are just too expensive for your capabilities or the money you have.

“If you're just in it for ego you're just going to keep losing money and then it's all going to be over quicker than you know it.”

Ben Shalom outlines ambitious plans for BBC schedule in 2026

There were no fewer than 175 days between Boxxer’s final show on Sky Sports and the first of their new deal with the BBC, which kicked off on Saturday night in Derby.

Jeamie ‘TKV’ Tshikeva beat Frazer Clarke to win the vacant British heavyweight title and usher in a new era for the national broadcaster’s rollercoaster relationship with boxing.

The show at Derby’s Vaillant Live Arena was the first of its kind shown on free-to-air prime time television in Britain for more than two decades and now Ben Shalom, the man at the helm of Boxxer, says it will begin a run of one show per month on the BBC.

When the deal was initially announced in August, following the end of Boxxer’s contract with Sky in June, the length of the deal and specifics on number of shows was not publicly disclosed. Some reports suggested that it may involve just three shows annually and nobody predicted a frequency of 12 per year.

But that is Shalom’s ambitious claim now their delayed showdown between TKV and Clarke finally got the ball rolling. Callum Simpson, who incidentally took centre stage as the curtain came down on the deal between Sky and Boxxer in June, is the next fighter scheduled to fight on the BBC.

The Barnsley man will defend his British, Commonwealth and European super-middleweight titles against Troy Williamson at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on December 20. Then, as Shalom told The Ring last month, Adam Azim will headline on January 31 before the ball keeps rolling throughout 2026.

“We are hoping for a show a month next year.” Shalom told The Ring. “Obviously July and August are traditionally slower months for us so let’s see how the summer goes. But certainly January, February, March etc will continue in the same vein.

“We’ve had to wait a bit of time and we’ve had to get all our ducks in a row and be ready to go but hopefully now this is the start of something special.”

Shalom and Boxxer had got their first major broadcast break via Channel 5, which aired some of the now defunct ‘Ultimate Boxxer’ tournaments. The format was also shown on 5Spike and BT Sport before Boxxer secured a highly coveted exclusive deal with Sky.

So Shalom is well placed to speak on how the machinations of the not-for-profit BBC differ from those of his previous broadcasters. It is why Shalom has also revealed that Boxxer are set to announce a new pay-TV partner before the year is out.

“It’s an interesting question,” he said when asked what has been the hardest thing about dealing with the BBC compared to Sky.

“I think it's difficult because they're a not-for-profit corporation, so that's something that you have to always bear in mind. I think we've had to detail the deal very creatively, which allows us to put on pay-per-view events and allows us to put on the events that require some sort of financial subscription behind them. We've worked really well to put that together.

“We've also had to make sure that everything's BBC compliant so that the way that we're going to present boxing suits the BBC and shows boxing in the best possible light. There's nowhere to hide on the BBC. This is an organisation that is scrutinised probably more than any other. It has been interesting and I'm starting to see the scale of the BBC and the scrutiny of the BBC.

“It's still the biggest platform in the UK by a mile. Understanding all the shows that they have, the digital platforms that they have, the iPlayer, the website, it's enormous. Now we're just trying to integrate the teams to try and make this the most powerful platform for boxing in this country.”

On Saturday night, the chief support, which featured Francesca Hennessy, and the main event were both shown on BBC Two while the undercard was broadcast on BBC iPlayer. However, Shalom revealed to The Ring that up to four hours of December’s show in Leeds could be shown on the linear channel.

He said: “That is what I’m told - the main broadcast could be three or four hours. That means we will look at three or four fights on there.

“Things will change depending on schedules with the BBC because of the amount of what they have on. Things can change between now and then but it will be a longer main broadcast than in Derby.

“iPlayer is also an enormous platform for the fights which will stream from the undercard and it’s certainly bigger than what we’ve had before. We are really just looking to use the full armoury of the BBC network.

“It's a huge privilege to be able to promote on the BBC, a huge privilege to bring boxing back to the national broadcaster for the first time in so long. I’m just delighted that we're here now and the idea is that it can now run like clockwork because of the work that's been put in.”
