You know whats the best thing about getting married at a nudist colony is, you know who the best man is.
Re: Classic American West Coast Boxing
Phil Jackson thinks he's a social worker as much as a basketball coach. He seems to enjoy working with problem children. He acquired Dennis Rodman for the Bulls when everyone warned him Rodman would be a disaster. Without the strong team leadership skills of Michael Jordan, Rodman would have disrupted the team. It was Jordan, not Jackson, who handled Rodman and kept the Bulls from coming unglued.THEHAMMER321 wrote:Tom, thinking about basketball again, I can't understand why anybody would want a trouble maker like Ron Artest on your team is beyond me, not questioning Phil Jackson's judgement for a second, but guys like that no matter how good they are, are so often detrimental to the whole chemistry of the team, same could be said for Terrel Owens, Latrell Sprewell, etc.

All we care about in L.A. is a winning team. A-holes are a dime a dozen in this town, as long as they produce, they're welcome here.raylawpc wrote:Phil Jackson thinks he's a social worker as much as a basketball coach. I'm just hoping the Lakers allow the Celtics to win one game at home, that way they can win the championship at the Staples Center.

Bennie Briscoe . . .
Hey Brian, since you bring up the name Bennie Briscoe, thought I'd give the thread a little behind the scenes news on Briscoe's pending WBHOF induction.
We are trying to persuede Bennie to fly to Las Vegas to accept his award. But getting thru to him isn't easy.
A couple of Philly boxing personalities have attempted to contact Bennie, but they have to go thru Mrs. Briscoe, who is a pretty tough charactor.
She's very protective of her husband. Our Dan Hanley has been doing his part. Dan is close with HBO announcer/former ref, Harold Letterman.
Briscoe is Letterman's favorite fighter, and they are friends, so perhaps Harold can get him on the plane.
We'll get him to Vegas some how, but our work is cut out for us. That's all for now . . .

Yeah Brian, this isn't an easy one.
Some of us are more interested in Bennie than we are Tyson, Chavez or Qawi.
Dan & I interviewed Philly's George Benton in 2007, we'd love to capture another Philly legend on camera.
However, the important thing is to treat the man respectfully. He truly deserves the honor.

Re: Classic American West Coast Boxing
Steve Molitor is hardly your typical Canadian fighter - not for him the legendary ruggedness of George Chuvalo and Yvon Durelle, the restless aggression of the Fighting Hiltons, the tragedy that is Arturo Gatti. Molitor brings real intelligence to his fights and to his life. He lives clean, he trains hard, he does 12 rounds and he takes the points. This is a man who once literally lived in a gym; this is a champion.
Southpaw Molitor defends his IBF super-bantamweight title against Nottingham veteran Jason Booth next month in Britain - the same Booth who admitted to a drink problem a few years ago and whose brother, Nicky, handed over a fine career to drugs, crime, prison and Jeremy Kyle. The contrast is particularly intriguing. Before he went off the rails, Nicky was floored and outboxed by Molitor over here in September 2002. Born-again Jason, who conquered the bottle and has come back better than ever, will want to even the score. He knows that Molitor never looked like stopping Nicky, despite the first-round knockdown. Nicky even dug deep and put in a big finish to the 12-rounder, but Molitor was too good in the end.
Jason is probably the most 'natural' fighter in British boxing today. The 32-year-old fights like a fresh-faced youngster as he breaks up his opponents with a mixture of head and body shots - nothing seems to faze him. He recently stopped Hartlepool tearaway Michael Hunter in five rounds; Hunter was also stopped stopped in five by Molitor in 2006.
Molitor was unbeaten in those days but later suffered his only defeat when Panamanian puncher Celestino Caballero mauled him in four rounds in Canada. He came back to win the IBF belt with a hard-earned decision over South Africa's Takalani Ndlovu earlier this year but had previously outclassed Ndlovu on the way to a nine-round stoppage. The word is that Molitor - ever the 'thinker' - lost his confidence after Caballero, that he is gun-shy, that he is there for the taking.
The unpeturbed Booth will surely test all that.

Voting day at the union hall today on whether to accept Boeing's final offer or not. It's a rowdy bunch down there today. It wouldn't surprise me if a few fights break out today between those that vote yes and those that vote no. It's happened before. Emotions are running high. Lot's of good guys in this union but they don't all agree. I voted no. We're still woefully behind all the other Boeing unions and we need parity. However, I respect the other guys right to vote his conscience. I have a feeling the contract will be ratified and we'll be back to work this week. Just my guess. What ever way it happens I'm looking forward to getting back to my normal routine.
Bennie Brisco. The epitome of a Philly fighter. Tough as nails and the type of fighter that we all respect here on West Coast Boxing. I have a lot of respect for him, and fighters like him. Rick, I hope you are able to get him to Vegas.
My aunt Frances passed away a couple of days ago. She was the wife of my uncle Larry, who passed away a few moths ago. The funeral is this morning. She was a sweet woman. She was 93.
Brian, my friend, glad to see you back!! Good luck in Philly.

Good luck with it. I heard that when he was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame and then selected to receive an award named after him as its first recipient, he wouldn't even drive across town to attend the ceremony and pick them up. The story I heard was that Bennie has put boxing behind him, and doesn't want the past to define who he is today.Rick Farris wrote:Expug wrote:Thanks Rick.

Can't say I do, Hammer, however, I checked out his record and saw that he turned pro in '91. I was judging the Chicago amateurs throughout the '80s and into the early '90s, so I must have judged some of his bouts. Could you find out what boxing club he fought out of?THEHAMMER321 wrote:Hey scar you know a guy from Chicago Mark Fornelli, he turned pro out here in Vegas only had 5 pro fights, I got to know him after he quit fighting.
