This was Hap Navarro's work, you might have been there, I wish I was . . .

Legion Stadium, Hollywood, California, United States

Manny Madrid D Enrique Bolanos PTS 10 10
Reuben Torres D LeRoy Richards PTS 6 6
Keeny Teran W Armando Felix PTS 4 4
Loren Pro D Petey Alvarez PTS 4 4
Aaron Junior D George Cramer PTS 4 4
Edgar Flowers W Johnny Vega
Bolanos and Madrid fought 2-3 times, I know I seen this one live because Keeny was on the card and I didn't miss Keeny's fights. did you know that Don Fraser and George Latka manage Madrid at one time?

I didn't know that Frank. I figured you were ringside for this one.

Well, guys, I just got my eustachian tubes unplugged and I can hear again. I'm glad I only have to go through that procedure every two years.

That's why GB is letting Ortiz fight Harris... :OhYes:
A chemical that might make a difference?

I always thought that maybe some boxers need a little more motivation before a fight.
Such as a big vat of acid back in the dressing room area, the kind that disintegrates anything that is dropped inside.
A fighter quits for no reason claiming, "Well I didn't become a boxer to get hit . . . " like Victor Ortiz announced after he quit on HBO one night.
A guy like that must step into the vat, and thus we boxing fans will have one less example of cowardace to think about.
The vat would certainly be a deterrant, don't you think? You can give or take your beating ike a man, or disappear for good.
Nobody is forced into a boxing ring. It's a choice. You make boxing your choice you better fight, or dive into the vat of cowardace.

Why not? Couldn't hurt during these weak times, might even be a marketable side show.
"Watch a bum disappear right before your eyes on PPV".
That's the only thing I'd buy featuring Victor Ortiz.
I had a heavyweight one time who quit after the sixth round of a 12-rounder. He's winning the fight, and he comes back to the corner and says, "Cut 'em off, I'm done." I say, "Man, you are winning the fight, you haven't lost a round!" He says, "Just tell the ref I'm done." "Why?" "Doesn't matter, I'm done. Tell him I'm done." The ref's response: Unprintable.

I was pretty pissed about it, and he wouldn't tell me in the ring why he wanted to quit, so I kept bugging him in the dressing room. Finally, he says, "Look, Tom, I was getting tired and he was going to start catching me." Then he add, "You know, a guy can get hurt in there if he ain't careful."

He quit another time too. He was boxing this quick light heavyweight who was making him look like a clown. So he does a no mas in in the middle of the third round, a la Duran v. Leonard. When the referee asks why he says, "He's embarrassing me! He won't let me hit him!" :o

You gotta admit, Tom, pushing a bum like that into a vat of acid sure would have been tempting.

A Mel Epstein Dinner Table . . .

I spent a lot of time in restaurants with Mel Epstein.
He would order for me whenever he could.
We'd go to this little cafe on 6th Street, around the corner from George Parnassus office.

The place was called the "Hi-Ho", and the old waitress might have been there on opening day, at least a half century before.
Old "Mary" was a nice lady, she would address Mel as "Mr. Epstein" and I was always, "young man."
"I'll have the lamb", Mel would tell her after reading the menu, "and the obstinate kid over there will have the liver."
Mel was buying, so I had little say in the menu.
Mel would flirt with Mary for a moment, and then she would smile and say,"Oh Mr. Epstein . . ." as she hurried away.

Mel would be pleased by her reaction and turn to me, smiling.
When Mary returned she'd have water glasses. Mel would immediatly frown and grab my glass, "Take this back and dump the ice."
Mary would look at him, puzzled, but then follow his order. When she brought me the water, I'd whisper to her, "he's crazy."
She'd nod, considering the possibility.

Mary would disappear and then bring our dinner.
Mel was in total control. He had a waitress at his beck & call, and I wasn't resisting his nutritional demands.

As I cut my liver Mel asked me if I was aware of the most healthy item on my plate.
"The liver?" My guess.
"No. It's the parsley. That little green decoration has more useful vitamins than that dead animal flesh your cutting into.
I reminded him, "You ordered that dead animal flesh."

Randy, did Mel ever lay that Parsley story on you? He'd tell how healthy the twig of parsley was, and then he'd top it off.
He'd proudly put the parsley in his mouth and eat it.

Mel Epstein was truly a crazy bastid.

Frankie Belma . . .

Frank, do you remember Jackie McCoy's welter, Frankie Belma.
He had an odd career, started out OK, even drew with Art Aragon, in Fresno 1958.
He disappeared, and then returned in the mid-60's at the Olympic.
In his last fight, he took a close ten-rounder from one of my favorite L.A. club fighters, Frankie "Too Sweet" Jennings.

Hook, Line and Sinker, the Fall of a Hall . . .

I can't imagine anybody spending more than a day in the world of boxing and not trip over at least a dozen phonies.
They're everywhere, and if you are so naive as to not pick-up on their methods, the familiarity of a losing concept, etc. then life won't be easy for you. Boxers tend to be a naive lot, for the most part. Most aren't ready to give up belief in a fairy tale.

The latest phony to strike, convinced the President of the WBHOF that he could turn our annual induction banquet (that lost over $20,000 last year) into a Las Vegas extraveganza, a combination of Hall of Fame inductions and top shelf entertainment.

Former fighter, and Motown Record creator, Berry Gordy Jr. was honored by the CBHOF a few years ago and was so kind to show and accept his award.
The promoter tells Mando Muniz, "I've got Gordy, which means I have Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, and other Motown headliners at my fingertips." He continued, "We're going to have them perform, as an opening act to the ceremony, award Gordy for his success, then honor the boxers. But first, a mega press conference, and a huge golf tournament. It'll take place just six days before Thanksgiving, just six days after Manny Pac vs. Margarito."

I'm no event organizer, but this WBHOF banquet being held on a friday, in what would be a tourist dead spot date-wise, seems not well thought out. Golf? We've lost money on golf tourneys before, so why not again? What's the thinking here?
Oh, and I forgot, the promoter, a black guy who claims to "know how to do business with black people" (that one lost me completely), also says SHOWTIME will want to broadcast the banquet live. When I was told that my reaction was simply, "BULLSHIT!"

This isn't the first time this promoter showed his face on the West Coast circuit. He laid a line on the Golden State Boxers Association about getting Muhammad Ali for guest appearances, etc. Just a 24 karat dirt bag in a suit.

As it is at the moment. A well meaning, but grossly naive President faces there being no WBHOF banquet this year.
That's about where it stands right now. This was the design of some, but there is no talk of salvaging the event, not yet, that is.

Thirty years, thirty banquets. No 31st? That's the talk around town.
The buzzards are circling above the battle scarred World Boxing Hall of Fame.

Hey Frank. Another thread discusses contenders who should have, but never got a shot at the heavyweight title. I was thinking about Clarence Henry from the early 50s. What do you remember about him? How good was he and do you think he deserved a shot? If memory serves, he was consistently ranked in the top three or four for a couple of years.

Yes,that is bad news about the banquet.
My thoughts, for what they are worth,The promoter shouldnt figure in.Hes out period. Adios.
Hes got an agenda as all promoters do and thats to make a buck off the fighters past accomplishments. Moreover, just fu.kin opening his mouth about being black and being able to deal with black performers is revealing.Who gives a sh.t about that?Leave it to a hump like that to somehow bring race into an event and sport for that matter that has no issue with it at all.
Also, golf outings are only useful as fund raisers if there is a dinner coupled with a silent and live auction of memorabilia. Also, each golfer would have to pay a hefty price for playing. The idea would be to have foursomes, each group with a former fighter/inductee golfing with the paying golfers.
I just worked security for one of these a couple nights ago.It was an N.H.L. deal. Former players hall of famers etc.It was very nice and probably made some money but there was enormous overhead.
Bringing in celebrities on top of everything else for the wbhof banquet would mean more enormous overhead as they would demand huge payment. The Hall could really take a bath if this came off the way that "promoter" wants.
Its sad to see this happening to the Wbhof.

Brian, our golf events once brought in a few bucks, but that was before I was involved. All I saw was lower end golf events, held miles from downtown L.A. This event can be salvaged, but time has been lost. A total restructure, focus on holding it in L.A. dwntown, early next year. It does not have to be held in 2010, but it must be held soon after. There is a way to overcome the challenges, but that would require new ownership of the WBHOF. It's not dead, not yet.
