Youth titles aren't world titles, the fighters themselves wouldn't say they were a world champion if they held one and the silver title isn't an interim title, they have them as well, they have silver, international and international silver titles, they're like Frank's old favourite, the WBO intercontinental title, winning them will give the fighter a top 15 ranking.Fat Git wrote:So there are 16 - yes SIXTEEN sanctioning bodies in business today. - even more than I thought there was, so what I am going to do is rank them in seniority
- the most established to the least. So the WBA - it came from the old NBA is the senior belt
and then comes the WBC, then IBF which was an offshoot of the WBA (again) and then the WBO
which was another offshoot of the WBA. So
WBA: Richar Abril
WBA Super: Vacant
WBC: Adrien Broner
WBC Youth World: Jose Maxian
IBF: Miguel Vasquez
WBO: Ricky Burns
WBB: Vacant
WBF: Chris Goodwin
WBPF: Vacant
IBO: Emiliano Marsili
IBA: Vacant
IBU: Vacant

And I haven't added the WBC 'Silver' title which is an interim world championship. Because we would have nine champions.
So even amongst that lot, I would have Ricky Burns the 4th best lightweight out of all those fighters calling themselves 'champions' and you might say - I don't know what you would say. I remember there being one world champion and the day he wasn't the best in his weight class is the day he got his title took off him, now when you have 16 - 17 title belts where people can call themselves 'lightweight champion of the world' that is a problem don't you think? If Brazil beat England in the world cup semi final and then England played Argentina in the third place play off and went home and called themselves 'world cup champions' everyone would laugh and say how ridiculous it is for them to do that, but for some reason, Ricky Burns not being the best lightweight in the world calling himself 'world champion' should be ridiculous but it doesn't seem to be on here.
If there was 5 miss worlds, 5 formula one world champions, 5 prime ministers, 5 field marshals - their title and prestige would hold no weight. We all know Ricky Burns isn't the best fighter at 135 - so why is it ridiculous to question his right to call him 'world champion' (singular).
What he should call himself is 'world title claimant'
Well, why isn't it a world championship? It is marketed as one but it has a (so called) age limit that they don't regulate, there have been fighters well over the age of 21 or whatever fighting for it. As for the Silver belt - it is an interim world championship belt, you can look it up easily enough. And what does interim mean? Transient, temporary - so, he is a 'temporary' world champion. It is all bollocks and a scam but still - some folks here are happy with it.expe wrote:Youth titles aren't world titles, the fighters themselves wouldn't say they were a world champion if they held one and the silver title isn't an interim title, they have them as well, they have silver, international and international silver titles, they're like Frank's old favourite, the WBO intercontinental title, winning them will give the fighter a top 15 ranking.Fat Git wrote:So there are 16 - yes SIXTEEN sanctioning bodies in business today. Whilst technically you are right, you can fight for the Youth title when you're over the age of 21 (it's up to 23 years 11 months actually) it becomes automatically vacant if you win it and you're over the age limit. Those rules are all on the WBC site somewhere (starting point http://www.wbcyouthpro.org/rules.html)Fat Git wrote:Well, why isn't it a world championship? fornicate me - that thread was from 7 years ago.dookus wrote:Much as it pains me to agree with Carlos (a man so objectionable he invites people to come round his house and fight him - http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=53902), he is absolutely bang-on here. What are we doing thinking of Ricky as a world champion when he's getting his arse kicked for what may be the 4th or 5th best regarded 'world title' out of the galaxy of poo boxing straps? No wonder our sport has no effing credibility.
The other champions are not supermen themselves.ThereByTheGrace wrote:I doubt the other champs are worried...unless the fight is in Glasgow
Ricky made a lot of excuses in that presser and its funny listening to Eddie as when one of the journalists brought up the idea of a rematch to Ricky, Eddie pipes up for him saying no! People keep going on about Eddie being good for boxing but he seems to like putting on mismatches aswell and protecting his fighters. He was supposed to be a breathe of fresh air for british boxing but he's not looking like that at the moment.
well said.Horse wrote:Gonzalez would give all of the other 15 world champions a lot of trouble as well.
Remind me which aspect of last nights fight could be described as a mismatch or protection? To me it seemed the opposite.columbo wrote:People keep going on about Eddie being good for boxing but he seems to like putting on mismatches aswell and protecting his fighters.
