Usyk-Dubois Now Set For August 26 in Wroclaw, To Align With Ukraine Independence Day

The Oleksandr Usyk-Daniel Dubois unified heavyweight title fight will now take place two weeks after its original target date.

The slight delay is for good reason. Alex Krassyuk, Usyk’s career-long promoter and head of K2 Promotions-Ukraine, revealed that the bout will now take place August 26 at Stadion Wroclaw (Tarczynski Arena Wroclaw) in Wroclaw, Poland. The switch is to align the event with Ukraine Independence Day (August 24), with a crowd of 24,000 expected in the heavily Ukrainian-populated region.

Wroclaw is home to many Ukrainians,” Krassyuk told TVP Sport. “The fight will take place at the stadium for 24,000 people. We had to change the date from August 12 to August 26. Because it is Ukraine's Independence Day. It's the perfect date to set up a fight with Dubois. We couldn't waste it.”

Usyk (20-0, 13KOs) will attempt the second defense of the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles he acquired in a September 2021 win over Anthony Joshua in North London. Their rematch last August 20 saw Usyk—a 2012 Olympic Gold medalist for Ukraine and former undisputed cruiserweight champion—earn a repeat win, though he had to settle for a strangely scored split decision to retain the titles.

His title defense versus Dubois (19-1, 18KOs) came about after collapsed talks for an undisputed championship clash versus lineal/WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (33-0-1, 24KOs). The two sides teased for months the possibility of a springtime collision, but it never came to fruition.

The WBA then ordered Usyk to enter a title consolidation clash versus London’s Dubois, who holds the WBA ‘Regular’ heavyweight title. The matter went to a May 25 purse bid hearing won by Krassyuk with a massive bid of $8,057,000, far outpacing the $5,620,050 amount submitted by Queensberry Promotions—Dubois’ promoter—as the lone other bidder.

Usyk (20-0, 13KOs) is due $6,042,750, 75-percent of the winning bid as the WBA ‘Super’ titleholder. Dubois (19-1, 18KOs) and his team are entitled to a career-high $2,014,250 payday per the standard 25-percent as the secondary titlist fighting for a superior belt.

The winner of the fight will be the sole recognized WBA heavyweight titlist, thus eliminating the ‘Regular’ belt from existence in accordance with the sanctioning body’s ongoing title reduction campaign.

Krassyuk targeted Poland given his financial backing in the area along with the bordering nation’s increased Ukrainian population since the start of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The chosen venue opened its doors in 2011, fittingly with another boxing event—national hero and two-division champ Tomasz Adamek’s failed WBC heavyweight title bid versus Vitali Klitschko who won their September 2011 meeting. Usyk-Dubois marks just the fourth boxing show to take place at the outdoor stadium.

But I think Daniel has a better opportunity to do that. He’s younger, he’s fresher, he’s got more energy. And I don’t think he’s as big and as muscle-bound as AJ so he probably won’t gas out as much. And if he makes this a six, seven, 10 round fight, just really goes for it, I don’t see how Usyk will be able to stop it."

Does Usyk want to risk Saudi? I wouldn't have thought they would mess around waiting on Dubios if he wasn't fit.

I would say it’s crazy how it’s so close yet not officially announced yet AJ is supposedly fighting 2 weeks before.

Depends how realistic they’re being with their financial expectations. Krassyuk fortunately isn’t daft but often people massively overestimate how much fights will do on U.K. PPV.

It’s the heavies man and Dubois can punch. Usyk getting old too and is way smaller. It’s not completely impossible. I think a 13% chance is about right.

Daniel Dubois: Oleksandr Usyk to defend heavyweight titles against Briton on 26 August

Heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk will defend his WBO, WBA (Super) and IBF titles against Briton Daniel Dubois in Wroclaw, Poland on 26 August.

Ukrainian Usyk, 36, will face Dubois - the WBA mandatory challenger - at the 24,000-capacity Tarczynski Arena.

Dubois, 25, holds the WBA (Regular) belt and has won 19 fights, with 18 knockouts, and been defeated once.

"He is a great fighter and I do respect him, but it's my time now," Dubois said.

"I'm going to shock the world and show people how good Daniel Dubois really is."

Pound-for-pound star Usyk has won all 20 professional fights and will make a second defence of his unified title.

"I am very glad that we have the opportunity to organise my fight in Poland, where I won my first world title seven years ago," Usyk said.

The fight, originally scheduled for 12 August, was pushed back by two weeks to more closely align with Ukraine's Independence Day, which falls on 24 August.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, more than a million Ukrainian refugees relocated to Poland.

"I want to thank the Polish people who are helping Ukraine so sincerely," Usyk added: "Hundreds of thousands of my compatriots have been hosted by this wonderful country.

"Therefore, I hope that my fight will become one more opportunity for Ukrainians and people of Poland to unite and strengthen our friendship."

Team Usyk hopeful of undisputed fight with Fury

Usyk, a former undisputed cruiserweight champion, dethroned Briton Anthony Joshua at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in September 2021, before winning the rematch in August 2022 in Saudi Arabia.

An undisputed fight between Usyk and Britain's WBC world champion Tyson Fury was set to take place at London's Wembley Stadium in April but fell through after disagreements over a rematch clause and purse split.

A historic Usyk-Fury contest - the first undisputed heavyweight fight in the four-belt era - was mooted to take place in Saudi in December as part of a mammoth heavyweight card also featuring Anthony Joshua v Deontay Wilder.

Fury's co-promoter allegedly has said that Fury-Usyk is unlikely to happen this year. According to reports, Fury may fight former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in an exhibition next.

But Egis Klimas, Usyk's manager, says he is still hopeful victory over Dubois will "lead to the biggest clash in the world" against Fury.

Dubois - from prospect to world-title challenger

In May, just three months before his maiden world-title shot, Dubois split with trainer Shane McGuigan and will now be trained by Don Charles.

The Londoner turned professional in 2017 and soon established himself as one of the brightest prospects in heavyweight boxing with a string of impressive knockout wins.

"To the outside world, Daniel is a big outsider," his promoter allegedly said.

"But here at Queensberry we are supremely confident in his ability to cause a major upset and achieve the status he set out to realise when he turned professional with us back in 2017."

In his 16th fight, however, he came up short against fellow Briton Joe Joyce in 2020.

Despite being ahead on two of the three judges' scorecards, Dubois took a knee in the 10th round and failed to beat the count.

Dubois was rushed to hospital and was diagnosed with a broken orbital bone and nerve damage to his left eye.

He returned to the ring with two stoppage victories and then in June 2022 won the WBA (Regular) title - to become number one challenger - by knocking out American Trevor Bryan in Miami.

In December, Dubois was knocked down three times in the first round before stopping South Africa's Kevin Lerena in the third.

Dubois is criminally well tracked. There are better contenders. Dan is blessed to have this lesson.

Easy nights work but Usyk needs to let DDD have some success if he wants to temp Fury into the ring.
