In the past 4 years:
Benn has fought 5 times.
He has won 4 times on points and lost 1 on points.
His victories were against 2 fighters clearly past their peak and 2 relative nobodies.
I get the general public falling for the marketing of Benn, but people on here talking about his chin, tenacity, spitefulness etc as indicative that he'll be competitive genuinely surprises me.
Our best 'data' is his most recent outing, but watching him against Regis Prograis, I saw someone with poor footwork and timing, lacking spite in his work and ring IQ. And this was against a version of Prograis that clearly had mobility issues and was cashing out at the end of his career,
Durability and workrate only get you so far in this game.
The bottom line is that the worst version we've seen of Garcia to date is still levels above the best we've seen of Benn.
It’s not about “falling” for anything. You’re not seeing people on here marvelling about Benn’s jab, footwork, ability to make adjustments etc. Nobody is saying he’s got a fantastic cv.
But it’s not madness to leave the door open to the idea that Benn can make things interesting with the attributes that he does have. Yes of course Garcia could wipe the floor with him, but let’s not pretend Garcia has proven he is anything close to being a great champion. He really hasn’t.

But he's still proven himself at a level way above Benn over a long period of time.
I get it when you can see potential in a fighter to bridge the gap - for example, I thought Smith would lose to
Subriel Matias, but could see why others were able to make a case for him.
But in this case, Garcia has better experience, faster hands, better KO power, better footwork and proven ability to do the championship rounds with world-level fighters.
Can Benn make it interesting? It's a reach, but it's possible.
But you've got people on here saying he can 'outhustle' Garcia to actually win the fight. That's where I'm struggling.

Must admit I’m also not seeing Conor anywhere on Garcia’s level, think he gets outclassed here. Not that I even rate Garcia massively highly, but he’s clearly a lot more skilled and operates at genuine world level which Benn has never done.

Benn will definitely be able to push Garcia into the ropes a lot in the early rounds. Not sure he'll be able to do much when he gets him there, but he'll be going for a lot of pressure early I would imagine. Otherwise what's the point of all this massive weight gain?
If he doesn't go for a lot of pressure early that's an even worse sign as it likely indicates he's just feeling completely flat.

Acid test for Benn is tasting that Garcia whipping left hook .. he will not have faced anything that fast or probably that hard. Eubank Jr was a shell and threw nothing Benn couldn't see coming first .. Garcia is something Benn has never faced before.
Maybe he can bite down and continue applying pressure on Garcia, but maybe he has a reality check and goes into survival mode with a limited skillset.
I really don't see Benn having anything Garcia hasn't seen/experienced before. The Rolly defeat wont have any relevance for Benn.

Oh sh*t...I know what's going on here.
The fix is in. All Benn has to do is survive the distance and he'll get the decision whether he deserves it or not. That's why the weight gain. He just needs to be thick enough to survive Garcia's punches, and he wins.
Zuffa doesn't have any Stars. He's a Star for them. They're gonna do all they can to keep it that way.

BENN REHYDRATES TO CRUISERWEIGHT NIGHT BEFORE BOUT WITH GARCIA
Based on how he rehydrated by Friday night, Conor Benn might’ve dragged himself deeper than “the hell” he described while shrinking his body below the welterweight limit.
Benn posted a video on social media that indicated he weighed 178.4 pounds when he stepped on a digital scale in his hotel suite at MGM Grand. He wore a T-shirt and sweatpants when he got on his personal scale.
Still, that’s an astounding 32.4 pounds more than Benn weighed when he stood on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale at an official weigh-in Friday morning for his 12-round, 147-pound championship clash with Ryan Garcia on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.
The unusual weight gain technically made Benn a cruiserweight, five divisions above where he’ll challenge Garcia for his WBC welterweight title.
England’s Benn weighed 146 pounds for their bout, slightly more than Garcia, who came in at 145½ for his first defense of a WBC belt he won from Mario Barrios on February 21 at T-Mobile Arena. Benn’s weight was his lowest since he came in at 146 for his second-round stoppage of Jussi Koivula in June 2019 in London.
There was no restriction in his contract for how much weight Benn could gain between the official weigh-in and the time he steps into the ring for his fight against Garcia. Their ring walks are tentatively scheduled to start at 7:50 p.m. PT Saturday and 3:50 a.m. BST Sunday in the UK.
Garcia, 28, hasn’t revealed how much weight he gained since their weigh-in. It is highly unlikely that he’ll come close to matching the 5-foot-8 Benn’s weight for a main event Paramount+ will stream to subscribers in the United States and DAZN will offer to subscribers of its Ultimate plan and on pay-per-view in the UK and Ireland.
Gaining so much weight won’t help Benn’s cause when it comes to dealing with the taller Garcia’s superior speed. Benn believes, however, that wearing eight-ounce gloves, standard for bouts contested at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds and lower, will favor him.
DraftKings lists Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs, 1 NC), of Victorville, California, as more than a 3-1 favorite over Benn (25-1, 14 KOs). Even if Benn beats Garcia, he told The Ring he intends to move back up to at least the middleweight division for his following fight.
Benn, 29, is just two fights removed from weighing in at a career-high 159¼ pounds for his 12-round middleweight rematch versus rival Chris Eubank Jr. He beat Eubank by unanimous decision in their second fight and avenged his lone loss in the main event of a Ring card November 15 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
Benn officially weighed 149½ pounds for his last bout – a 10-round, unanimous-decision defeat of Regis Prograis on April 11 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Don’t get me wrong, I can see a few ways this fight unfolds, and mostly with Benn losing. Garcia might just end up walking through him.
But Garcia often looks fantastic when the opponent isn’t bringing any pressure. And pressure is all Benn knows.
Personally I can’t completely write Conor off in this fight even though he looks up against it. I certainly can’t write him off against a guy who sits at a press conference eating an egg to make a statement, despite having been busted for PED’s himself. That’s some questionable mentality right there.

I hear you. I'd just point out that Benn has shown no evidence of being able to bring educated pressure (my point about the lack of footwork and ring IQ). His pressure worked against a version of Eubank that was significantly slower and weaker than the peak version, but he couldn't even cut the ring off effectively and overpower a one-legged, old Prograis.
If he tries to do the same against Garcia I think the latter's left hooks will soon force a radical change of plan.
