Classic American West Coast Boxing
Re: Classic American West Coast Boxing
Some one once told me that winning is easy to accept, you learn what respect is from others. How you deal with that is a tough decision put in many peoples hands.Integrity has to be earned.
Losing is a character builder through humility.
You learn more about yourself and true friends when you lose, not when you win.
Certainly Margarito was a fine example of a losing boxer showing respect at the end.He has a lions heart. He did his best. If he learned his lesson from his former mistakes, then he is a good man of character. His integrity remains to be seen.
Certainly they are both Class A boxers in their time.
Manny moving up to heavy weight from Lt-middleweight I think is a long stretch.
There might be a few who did it successfully, Willie Pastrano did it, but he was just a boy at middleweight and grew into it. Jake couldnt cut it at Lt- Heavy.
I dont remember Duran being successful at bigger weight.
Unless Manny can grow 3 inches over the years , will his body accept more weight- his advantage is speed, something you lose alot of, unless your a fit natural hvywt.(Ali)
I think he should stay where he is and hope Mayweather sees the light($$$$$).
Mosely is a step backwards but any fight will draw with Manny in it.
Williams could just be his next fight ???If he wants to fight-didnt he say that this is it, that politics is now first in his life after his fight with Antonio ?
I thought he said that during his training routine.
Bennie, anybody over in Europe, that maybe we dont know about, would make a good opponent for Manny. ?

Of course, I was being facetious with my remark about the Klitscho Brothers. Still, one wonders.CNorkusJr wrote:Some one once told me that winning is easy to accept, you learn what respect is from others. How you deal with that is a tough decision put in many peoples hands.Integrity has to be earned.

Randy, You know nowadays-many fighters are driven to the big money, and heavies are the main source of a big check. Though Mannys $15 million+ is not to shake a stick at for this Margo fight.
I am sure you and I both saw some crazy things with fighters moving up to get a part of the heavywt. crown. over the years. For Manny it would have to be Cruiserwt.
If Manny thinks he could do it, I wouldnt be suprised, but it would take baby steps-not all at once. Realistically, I think he could move up to 165 lbs eventually and have moderate success, but the question is "Is anybody home when he comes calling at 165 lbs".

One of the greatest prizefighters I have ever seen.
I don't believe that Duran or Napoles are better. And I saw both up close.
My opinion.
His record speaks for it's self Rick I hear he's moving up to heavy to take on Under achiever audley harrison my money will be on Manny
Why not just cut to the chase and go after Vitali K.

Hey,all you guys online today, this never happens, I better unload
, I guess I was the only one on here who didn't see the fight last night, I don't know what Mayweathers problem is but if he wants a big payday he knows where to get it, with all due respect to Manny, I never buy the notion that one fighter is afraid of another, fighters have to much pride and always think they are better than really are, sometimes there trainer or manager might be scared but not the fighter.

Paulie, I mostly agree with you and my potshots against Mayweather Jr are mostly in fun. However, I do believe that a fighter can fear losing, not so much getting beaten physically but losing, stature and respect, or being made to look like a fool.THEHAMMER321 wrote:Hey,all you guys online today, this never happens, I better unload, I guess I was the only one on here who didn't see the fight last night, I don't know what Mayweathers problem is but if he wants a big payday he knows where to get it, with all due respect to Manny, I never buy the notion that one fighter is afraid of another, fighters have to much pride and always think they are better than really are, sometimes there trainer or manager might be scared but not the fighter.
Case in point. Hagler vs Leonard. I thought Hagler won the fight but he still has only himself to blame. Why? Because he was afraid to look foolish against a clever Sugar Ray Leonard. His punches, usually thrown with commitment were thrown with too much caution, especially when he had Leonard on the ropes or in a corner. He was afraid to commit. Never did he fear losing to Leonard, he feared looking less than what he was, he was afraid of looking foolish. This change in style caused the judges to think maybe Leonard was winning. That and Leonard's persona won the fight. Just my opinion.
Also, it's hard not to think that as the fight started between Michael Spinks and Mike Tyson, Spinks began having serious second thoughts, that or he just got sleepy.

Speaking of the good old days, Jeri got rid of the coffer maker and bought an old fashioned stove top coffee pot. I love it!kikibalt wrote:That goes without saying Tom....raylawpc wrote:For goodness sake, don't forget the washboards! I can't even remember when we made the switch from coffee pot to coffee maker or whatever happened to our old coffee pot. L like hearing the coffee percolating in the pot. Music to my old school ears!

He knows he can't hurt Pac with his power, and he questions his ability to tag a target that is faster and more elusive than he is.
When has Mayweather seen punches coming from the angles Pac will lay on him, or felt that crack of Pac's power.
He'll likely get a whipping, embarrassed, no less. It ain't worth more than $30 million to him to find out.
He's waiting for Manny to start a downward slide, then he'll consider a fight.
This fighter (Pac) is competitive with the greats of any era, not just a contemporary phenom like Floyd Jr.
I consider that a big factor. And so does Mayweather & company.

Frank . . . I'm not yet a kept man. However, I'm trying to think like one.
That washer & dryer (the kind you plug into the wall) might be a good investment.
For one thing, the clothes feel better fresh out of the dryer.
Might remind her your worth keeping. Might even get you some menudo con pata? And who knows what?
Tell me now, Frank, is this logical "kept man" thinking?
You're my "kept man" mentor, so I need to know.
Would it be out of place to suggest she put in for overtime to help her wish come true?
Overtime would take away from time needed at the stove, cleaning, etc.
Set me straight, Frank. Your my idol!

Well, she already has a washer & dryer that plugs into the wall, but they only work when they want to. You remind them you are worth keeping by telling them how lucky they were in meeting you.....Rick Farris wrote:kikibalt wrote:That goes without saying Tom....raylawpc wrote: For goodness sake, don't forget the washboards! Obscure West Coast Boxing Connection . . .
Randy, I love your blog!
I just took a look at a B&W slide show of L.A. historical boxing photos.
It shows one of Mando Ramos standing over Jerry Stevens, whom he'd just KOed in one round at the Olympic.
I was there that night.
On this night, in June, 1966, Joey Orbillo would suffer his first loss to Eddie Machen in the main event.
Ramos was featured in the prelim, and after his quick KO of Stevens an intermission was called.
During that intermission, broadcast on KTLA Ch-5, Little Tony Baltazar, age 5, gives a shadow boxing demo to promote the following night's L.A. Jr. Golden Gloves championships that would be held at the 18th & Grand arena.
Ramos brought down the house with his stunning KO.
Little Tony then brought down the house with his pro moves and engaging smile, right before the main event.
Joey Orbillo didn't have as much luck as the first two future L.A. legends, dropping a ten round decision to vet Eddie Machen.
Good stuff, Randy!
---------------------------------------------------------
Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, United States 6/23/66
Boone Kirkman W Al Carter TKO 1 10
Eddie Machen W Joey Orbillo SD 10 10
Mando Ramos W Jerry Stevens KO 1 6
Billy Walker W Ken Watkins

Frank . . . . I hope you don't plan on giving her all three.
Remember, you are spoiling her enough by surprising her with such a beautiful clothesline. (Page 181-"Kept Man Manuel")
If Monica and I move, I'll sell the washer and dryer.
Such a scenic clothesline photo should inspire a woman's instinctive need to launder clothing.
It will be good for eco's, cost effective, allows a woman to be a woman, and provides them with something to do before they leave for work each day.
I told Monica that I can no longer help around the house in any manner. It would break the code of the CBHOF. I was thinking you could write me a letter, on the CBHOF letterhead, that states that I'd be breaking the rules if I engage in common domestic activity. Suggest it could effect her U.S. Citizenship, etc.
What are friends for???

Maybe you can buy her some fishing gear, and take care of it for her.

Hey Tellboy, just want you to know if you can make it to Los Angeles the week of June 25th, you and a guest will be my guest for the best West Coast Boxing event of it's kind. This goes for all the regulars.
