Memories from CAWCB . . .
I went back to the beginning of this thread and randomly moved forward thru the pages and I have to say that there is a lot of boxing treasure here.
Next Saturday will mark the third anniversary of Classic American West Coast Boxing.

The originator of this thread, Brian Higgins (ExPug), will be on hand at this year's California Boxing Hall of Fame to represent Fritizie Zivic at the latter's induction.

When talent was common . . .
Reviewing videos of Carlos Ortiz reminds me of why some of us are unhappy with boxing today.
Such a talented boxer/puncher. Manny Pacquiao is a brilliant fighter, but he would look a lot more average if guys like Carlos Ortiz were around.

Watching UCLA's football great Woody Strode in "Pork Chop Hill" brought back memories of seeing Strode walk into Bradly's, A nite club on Whittier Bl. on the Eastside, where I used to hang in the late '50's-early-60's, madder then hell looking for his wife, Luana....
Former L.A. heavyweight Abel Fernanedz also has a part in Pork Chop Hill....

Was thinking about all the fights I bet on through the years, I generally bet the underdog or I don't bet, Bobby Chacon vs Boza Edwards II, I bet Bobby here a 3 to 1 underdog and he gets the win in one of the best fights ever, Edwin Rosario vs Howard Davis, I took Howard here as a 4 to 1 underdog in Puerto Rico, he gets knocked down in the last round and loses the decision, Tony Baltazar vs Roger Mayweather I bet Tony here as a 2 to 1 underdog, i got +160 for $400 got back $1040 when Tony won the decision, Mike Tyson vs Carl '' The truth'' Williams took underdog Williams at 25 to 1 and Carl gets KOed in the 1st but really was just 1 fight away as Tyson gets koed by Douglas in his very next fight a 40 to 1 underdog and I had no bet, honestly after losing betting on Williams the previous fight didn't feel like ''throwing away money'', on Douglas, I wish I had.

Beating the Odds . . .
I don't bet often, only when I feel pretty good about a heavy underdog.
The two Duran bets I made at 3-1 (I got +250 on both) were the best I can remember winning.
Here is what I did with the cash I won on Duran vs. Barkley. I made a $2500. profit and parlayed it on Tyson vs. Bruno the following week.
I had no doubt that Tyson would KO Bruno, but took the under which was 4 rounds or less at even money.
Now this is Tyson's first fight in months, since his 91 second KO of Spinks. I expected him to be rusty, but I never expected a soft-chin like Bruno to answer the bell for round five. I considered putting another hundred on Tyson, in one round or less at +1500, but passed.
Tyson floors Bruno in the first twenty seconds and I'm wishing I'd have put the $100 on a 1st rd. KO.
However, Bruno rises as one might expect from a game Brit. Suddenly Tyson starts missing punches. And Bruno starts to land.
By the third round I'm getting a little nervous. When Bruno stood to answer the bell for round five, I knew I was leaving Las Vegas with the same amount I came with the previous week when I bet Duran. I covered my outlay, and bet the rest.
It was fun for about a week.
Paul, like you I thought the same thing about the Tyson-Douglas match. I was actually living at a resort hotel-casino while on location in San Domingo, Dominican Republic. They had a Sports Book, I had the money to bet, but why would anybody be so dumb as to put cash on Buster Douglas?

I honsetly have no idea. However, I know those guys were around.
And there was a lot of ringside wagering, especially on a major fight.
In those days we had competitive fights, so there was plenty of action.

I watched a few games on TV when Alcinder was playing, but I never went to Pauley Pavilian for a game.
Walton and I had a mutual friend but I never met him. I saw him at a party once, and on TV a few times.

Rick, there was a section at the Olympic that was unofficially reserved for gamblers. There was a lot of ringside gambling but I don't recall any bookie, of course I was never a gambler so even if there was I probably wouldn't know about it.I know Benny Georgino was the odds maker for boxing on the west coast, according to Mel Epstein. He would be the guy to know.

As I mentioned, I'm not much of a gambler. Most of my betting was done at work without the benefit of odds. I lost $500.00 on the second Duran-Leonard fight. Who would've thought?
I lost another $500.00 dollars on the Tyson-Spinks fight. I thought then, and I still believe it was a reasonable thought, that Spinks had the goods to beat Tyson. Tony Tucker had some good moments against Mike Tyson, especially with the uppercut, he just couldn't sustain it. I thought Spinks would be able to out box Tyson and sneak the uppercut in. It was a reasonable assumption. Tyson was not a big heavyweight, so I thought Spinks had a good chance. You can't predict what a fighter will do in the ring.
A couple of years later when Tyson fought Buster Douglas I decided not to bet. I should have bet the house on Douglas but who knew?
