Speaking of Mike Tyson, he has a TV show coming up in March on Animal Planet. The show will center on his love of pigeons and pigeon racing. Tyson raised pigeons when he was growing up.

I share that with Tyson and I understand his love of pigeons. I raised pigeons when I was young, up until 10th grade when I no longer had the time. I had quite a few birds, Birmingham Rollers, West of England and Bald Headed tumblers, Racers, Fantails and Austrian High Fliers.

I would let the High Fliers out in the morning and they would circle the sky, getting higher and higher until I could no longer see them. They would stay up there for hours, sometimes all day, coming down as the sun went down.

The two most interesting birds I had were two Multicolored male English Trumpeters. They were gay, for lack of a better word. My dad called then the queer birds. Man these two birds loved each other. I had to buy a glass egg so they could play house. I separated them for a year, mated them with other birds and when I put them back in the same coop again, they went straight to action, if you know what I mean. My father was completely dumbfounded by These two birds. I probably could have made money selling tickets to see them.

I still dream about all those birds.

Brownie and his mate....

At some point when I was raising pigeons I acquired a bird called Brownie, a big strong bird that seemed to be a mix of a bald headed tumbler and a racer. His head was white and most of his body and wings were brown. He came with a smaller female bird, mostly brown who was known simply as "his mate'. She was the epitome of a feminine bird. She didn't have a name when I got her and I never gave her one. She was simply his mate. Pigeons are monogamous and they mate for life. The males are extremely jealous and protective.

When I first introduced Brownie and his mate to the coop, he was immediately challenged by the top bird. It's interesting to see two pigeons fight. They use their wings the way a fighters uses his hands. In and out, side to side, using the wings as both a shield and a weapon. Brownie kicked his ass.

Brownie was the king of his domain and his mate enjoyed the privilege of being the queen. They are very communal and social animals. They become friends to their owners.

In a sense Brownie was the heavyweight champeen of the coop. I had hundreds of pigeons, and lots of males who wanted both his mate and his title. Brownie had a very regal aura. He never lost a fight.

Best damned pigeon I ever had.

Classic photo Frank. I was two years old in 1956. I wonder if my dad was at that fight. He was a Robibson fan.

My daughter Meranda has been having a yard sale at our house this weekend. She and the kids will be here in a little while to set up in the front yard. The front yard was packed with people yesterday. I'm enjoying the peace and quiet while I can.

Maybe because I got mine early today and stayed home, it threw the natural order of the "Kept Man" universe out of alignment.
