Strangely funny post Rick, though a good warning to us all. I can never get enough of the post from you and Randy about Mel, today Mel would have his own reality show and I would be his biggest fan. I would like to know more about him, his history, I know he spent some time in the Bay Area it appears on his way to L.A. I thought I would share this with you my friends.
My firehouse in Times Square responded to a smell of smoke in Times Square
during the celebration on Bin Laden's death. It was a hotdog cart burning charcoal.
Afterwards, a news camera caught asked the men for interviews.
Al Quinones FDNY attended the Trinidad-Hopkins fight in MSG in 2001 with me.
They were tickets from actor Michael Douglas as he could not use them that night, gave them to our firehouse.
Ladder 4 is the unit I was assigned to for 20 years in midtown.
Area where interviewed about 45 St & Broadway,7th Ave. Crossroads of the World.

Rick, A piece on the "Golden Boy" from the Ring- Dec, 1956.
It may be a threat or it may be a promise but Art Aragon told Sid Ziff, sports ed. of the Mirror-News, that he'd retire from the ring if the commision didn't allow him to use collodion in future fights. He cuts easily around the eyes.
Though i don't always agree with Aragon, I go along with him in this instance. Fighters are permitted-nay, forced !-to wear cups; they are allowed the use of a mouth piece to protect the lips. Then why, in Heaven's name, no protection for the eyes? Football players wear enough armour to tilt with Sir Lancelot; baseball players are protected too. Why not boxers? Too many fights are halted because of cut eyes-and that cheats the cash customer.
Rick, Collodion do you know anything about it?. Have you heard from Audie lately?.... :TU:

Charley, a fighter had to win three British title fights to keep a Lonsdale Belt for life (today it is four). Henry won 10 British title fights and thus won three Belts, a record number. No British fighter has ever won as many as Henry's three Belts.

Is there an "original" and where is it kept ?
In fact. Is there a British Boxing HOF located somewhere and have any of you lads got to it yet. ?

Don't know what it is/was, I do know that Aragon used it, it was then known as "New Skin". Back then I just knew what I read in the papers, was away reading that Art was threatening to pull out of fights if he was not allowed to use it, end of the day he was allowed to use it.... :TU:

I remember watching Lauro Salas wearing something on both of his eyes in a fight against Jimmy Carter at the Olympic on Classic Boxing, Don Dunphy was the announcer and he mentioned it so casually I was stunned, I had never seen or heard of anyone being allowed to do it. It does make since on any terms, not just the fact that many a fight card has ruined by cuts but what about a fighters health.

New Skin . . .

Frank, I remember seeing guys wearing it into the ring in the 60's.
There was this welterweight club fighter from Mexico, Jose Valenzuela.
He fought Frankie "Too Sweet" Jennings in an Olympic ten-rounder one thursday night on TV.
Valenzuela had heavy scar tissue and kind of neanderthol eye brows.
His corner would cover his brows with new skin, and within a couple rounds he'd be bleeding anyway.
After a few rounds, the new skin begins to peel off and hangs from his bloody eye brows.
The guy looked like his face was peeling off. The guy looked like a monster half-way thru the fight.
It really made for sme dramatic special effects. :OhYes:
I believe Collodion was dangerous to a person's eye sight, and could lead to permanent blindness.
I don't believe that Collodion and New Skin are the same thing?
I remember in the 60's Collodion was already banned, but New Skin was legal.

There is no British HOF, although there is talk of setting one up. There would have been eight original Lonsdale Belts, Charley, after the British Boxing Board of Control was formed in 1936 (previously British fighters boxed for the NSC Belt). They must be in the possession of relatives of ex-British champions. Occasionally, very occasionally, a Lonsdale Belt pops up for sale.

The London Ex boxers association have just had a very successful exhibition at Hackney museum in London of East end boxing with the help of the heritage fund & it is hoped that this will some way to setting up a national boxing hall of fame,It's long overdue Britain has a long history of boxing & it seems strange that one is not already in place
