Matthew Barney was very effective as a boxer and I think he was a traveller, he didn't get the headlines as his style wasn't a very pleasing one to watch though he was skilled and got himself in very good condition.

When I would have a look at the final results,I would see that the final was covered by 70% / 80% Travellers.

Traveller Boys would have no dedication to turn senior or professional as travellers are not known to be ticket sellers because the general public hate travellers.

Travellers boys would then start working as young as 14/15 which would take up much of their time & wouldnt be 100% dedicated to Boxing.

Some boys would also be looking for women as we marry at a young age aswell.

But the main reason that I think Travellers don't really go onto Professional boxing is because whose going to buy Tickets to watch travellers box.

Promoters need tickets sellers and unless your an Traveller Olympian (Billyjo Saunders) you not really going to sell. With the exception of Tyson Fury who shouts his mouth off to sell tickets which has work a treat.

If Travellers were treated as normal folk and not Tarred with the same brush as some other traveller a few hundred miles away,A traveller who has done something wrong but would not even know each other but still be class as the same would bring a lot more Travelling champions.Thats just my opinion.

We would like to be treated as individuals.

Just an example ,"Travellers lie about their age whilst boxing",I didn't .
hmm. I may be wrong but I think Fury has, if anything, built himself on being a traveller hasn't he? He came along at the time when Big Fat Gypsy Weddings was big and Paddy Docherty had won celebrity big brother and the public's interest in Irish travellers was at an all time high. It's a huge part of his appeal and he has right from the start been photographed next to caravans and with a pony and trap. People love all of that. Look how people lap it up. Being mouthy and being 6'9" helps. He's actually very marketable and had national TV exposure. Like I said before, I was friendly with gypsy lads as a young man and they looked and sounded nothing like Tyson Fury. He could never had mentioned it, really. But it definitely has been used a selling point. Sure I agree people should be judged on being an individual but, as this is a thread about him, you have John Fury who cannot open his mouth without talking about what it is to be a traveller and how nobody will ever respect his son because he is a traveller etc etc. it gets a bit wearing and i never really heard anyone slag Fury because he was a traveller. Going on and on does get a bit tiring. It does seem like John Fury doesn't seem to want himself, his son, or all of his family, to be judged on being individuals. He wants them judged as travellers. We are this, we are that. We say this we say that. It rubs people up the wrong way I think. If say, Fury was Scottish, and you had his dad in the background constantly going on about how Scottish people were the strongest and had been oppressed by the English all the time, nobody would ever accept him because he was Scottish etc, then people would eventually go, "oh eff off with being Scottish already". Maybe that's not the greatest example but you get what I mean, right?
Yes,Tyson Fury came along at the right time,as the interest grew in Travellers because of Big fat gypsy weddings,Paddy Doherty on Big brother. But any other time in the last 20 years, traveller boxers wouldn't get the exposure or following as another boxer from the same area.Thats just my opinion.

I like Andy Lee ,he doesn't go on about being a traveller, doesn't maintain that his the best that camed out of a mothers womb.I haven't heard him insult his fellow boxers BUT he can't fill a phone box because his a Traveller,if he was a settle man ,he would fill any arena in Ireland.

People want to see Fury lose because of what he says and Fury knows it which is why he keeps mouthing off.
Have to disagree with that. An example of the top of my head is Michael Gomez. He had no trouble selling tickets. Everyone lapped up his back story. That gypsy kid Hennessey had was getting exposure on TV and was set for bigger things before running into Watson. Henry Wharton was hardly an unpopular, vilified figure. thats just off my dome. Gary cooper was a brave gypsy fighter always getting props.

Andy lees very well thought of, he doesn't sell cos he's got no charisma, he's a boring personality. it's nothing to do with being a traveller.

I watched him do some amazing things in the gym, just couldn't do it on the night. He was robbed for the European if I remember

Wharton was one of the biggest sellers of the nineties. Equally popular with non travellers.

Has to be a boxrec first - a positive post on Barney!

I have to agree with Stevieb8006 about Andy Lee. Andy might be a nice fella but he doesn't come across as a particularly exciting guy. I always thought he was quite dull and I didn't even know he was from the travelling community. Maybe because he is so dull I couldn't be bothered to read anything about him.

Went to the Hatton gym (last spsr before Senchenko) and saw a traveller called Eddie Gallagher absolutely battering Craig Lyon. Never went pro, and disappeared into the traveller world.

Incredible waste

Sparring means little though, there's tons of "gym fighters" out there, they look great in training but never amount to much more. Maybe the opponent Lyon was out of shape, told to go easy or was practising his defence. Former heavyweight Elijah Tillery was said to be a great gym fighter who often beat up world champs in training and was a popular pick in the sparring circuit, he didn't amount to much as a pro.

EDIT: This is Gallagher, said he was a pro boxer but can't find a record for him.

I think spending most of his career in the states never really allowed him to build a fanbase back home, not a growing one like say Warrington who's support grows each passing fight

On the flipside despite Lee being fairly popular stateside,he never really had the same impact as Duddy

Maybe you should read something about him and watch his fights.
Andy is a gentleman and a genuine nice guy and a former world champ who had some of his best successes in USA.
Why should he bang on about being a traveller?
There a lot of travellers who are like Andy in this country but dont go around trying to be pig ignorant bullying intimidating arseholes.
But for most, the travellers who most people come into contact are the ones who fvck up land that doesnt belong to them ,shit all over the place ,abuse inoffensive local residents , steal , intimidate and bully. And that is why the majority of people dont like travellers.

And another thing.
Adam Booth is an overated trainer.
Sometimes the game plan doesnt pan out and Booth was too casual with Andy.
Andy needed a kick up the arse way before he realised he was losing

No one said he wasn't a gentleman, no one said he wasn't a genuine nice guy. Merely said in my original post that I found his personality boring. I stated how well thought of he is.

As for watching his fights, I have. Last one was a barnstormer wasn't it? Truth is he's needed an equaliser most of the times I've seen him, just doesn't excite me.

He shouldn't have to bang on about being a traveller I agree, but then don't cry cos you don't sell any tickets.

I don't feel I should have to "read up" about a fighter just cos he can't make headlines or capture the imagination, that means I'd have to read about loads of them. I'm not obliged to put myself out just cos he's a nice guy. It's his job to entertain, I'm sure he's earns well this year.

Read the original post below first, you are mis-interpreting what I meant. I meant his lack of personality has more to do with the lack of public interest rather than him being a traveller. I also said he was a nice fella.

:TU: I remember watching Henry Wharton & it wasn't untill after his career had finished had I relise that he were a Traveller.
I'm not saying that he didn't mention it but having only watch him box a few times when I was younger,I just didn't know.If I didnt, did average person know ?

Michael Gomez was brilliant to watch, coming in as the Irish Mexican but he wasnt associated with Travellers from the get go,I remember watching him box and didn't have a clue until he was having the bigger fights which by then he had an army of fans.

Just my thoughts and probably wrong.

Yes, it got mentioned a lot by the BBC in his amateur days. They called him a travelling showman which him and his family hated. Everyone in Yorkshire knew, he grew up in a caravan in a very big family.
