Norris - Vargas? good one..... normally i think of an outcome straight away but i have to think about this....
I think vargas takes a shellacking early but eventually catches up with Norris, if tito couldn't finish him early then i don't think Norris necessarily would. the 'naturally bigger man' vargas by late k.o, sooner or later Norris's chin gets shown up.
Marvin Johnson - Dwight Muhhamad Qawi 15 rounds.

Qawi by 14th round TKO.
I don't think Johnson can really outbox him, and that means he'd have to stand and fight with Qawi, who was the better and more skilled infighter IMO.
Johnson's quick hands and southpaw stance give Qawi some trouble early, but Qawi's persistent short punching carries the day for him.
Azumah Nelson vs. Brian Mitchell - who was Africa's best jr. lightweight ever?

The Professor, Nelson, via 12 round decision if over 12, and 14th round Ko if over 15. Hell of a good matchup

Chandler might drop Gomez early, but Gomez's better footwork and bigger punching allows him to outmaneuver/outbomb Chandler en route to a late round stoppage.
Holyfield vs. Joe Frazier

Holyfield gives Frazier all he can handle through about 8 or 9 rounds, the Smokin Joes punishing body work slows Evander down, and Joe eeks out a close, but unanimous decison.

Lacy TKO 8.
Lacy might struggle early on, but then he catches up with Dana. In other words, a typical Lacy performance.
(PS, whatever happened to Rosenblatt?)

toss a coin, it lands heads. Olivares U/D, see-saw fight, maybe controversial even.

Arguello by MD. In a much disputed decision.
Zora Folley Vs Sam McVey 12 Rounds.

hmm...tough one...I like McVey, though, only because of his tremendous punching power; question is whether or not he could have landed the big one enough times to have put Folley out in 12 rounds, considering McVey was supposedly slower than molasses...I see a KO in 8-10 rounds...
Journeyman Action, 10 rounds, "Irish" Bob Murphy vs Harry "Kid" Matthews, the return bout!

Muhammad Ali 1979, vs Gerrie Coetzee 1979, 15 rounds, WBA championship

Re: Hypothetical Match-Up Game

by Robinson
Coetzee beats Ali, his youth and aggression put Ali against
the ropes and into a corner often, Ali spending whole rounds
covering up and eating un answered body shots. He sticks
his tongue out and shakes his head, but he writhes after
most shots.
He tries to move behind his jab in the 8th, flicking it
out, missing with it. Coetzee is able to counter and
maul his way inside.
The fight is painful for many to watch. Coetzee does
his best to be the first man to stop Ali. Ali's pride
and spirit keep's him afloat....but certainly not
floating nor stinging.
Coetzee SD 15. (One judge does his best to keep Ali's
crown on his head, the other two have the fight 148-140
Coetzee)
Earnie Shavers (1976) Vs Jersey Hoe Walcott (1951) 15 rounds.
Re: Hypothetical Match-Up Game
Posted: 25 Jun 2008, 19:58
by HomicideHenry
I think Walcott wins a decision, mainly on the basis that Jersey Joe was a hard man to catch to begin with and that if it took Marciano 12 1/2 rounds to finally land the big one after so many power shots...I dont think Shavers slow, ponderous, thudding shots, no matter how powerful he was, would have gotten to Jersey Joe often enough to have knocked him out or knock him down enough times to win a decision; also Shavers had poor stamina, so he'd be sucking wind after five rounds.
Pete Rademacher, vs Tefilio Stevenson, 10 rounds

Re: Hypothetical Match-Up Game
Posted: 25 Jun 2008, 20:54
by Robinson
Stevenson starts strong having a solid lea. By the sixth round
he is slowing and his shots have less sting. rademacher is able
to win back some rounds, even after being floored early in the
fight.
The eighth see's Teo rally strong, wobbling rademacher who
takes an eight count. Rademacher comes back looking to land
the over hand right.
The final bell sounds, both men worse for wear, Stevenson
gets the nod, the margins are close, but his knock downs
and early lead make him the clear winner.
Jack Dempsey (1919) Vs Lennox Lewis (2000) 12 rounds.

Lewis survives a testy first round seeing Dempsey stun him a few times, stopping Dempsey in the 5th. Lewis is just too big and strong for Dempsey.

Lennox proves to be more effective at neutralizing Dempsey's attacks than a faded, out-of-shape Jess Willard.
Lennox jabs, holds, and smothers his way to a clear UD.
Harold Johnson vs. Marvin Johnson, light-heavyweights, 15 rounds.
(And please don't just answer with "Johnson".

sockdolager wrote:

Hmmmmmm... tough one.
I'll guess that Hearns is able to keep the bout at a distance using his jab and footwork, until he finally opens up Cotto's guard and drives his right hand home.
Let's say Hearns TKO 8.
OK, now back to my Johnson fight.
