Noe Cruz . . .

I was surprised when a big man came up to me and introduced himself.
"I remember you from the Jr. Golden Gloves, I was younger than you were. I'm Jimmy Cruz, my dad is Noe Cruz."
Of course, his dad was traing boxers out of the Stanton AC way back when, and eventually establish the Westminster Boxing Club.
Noe worked with a lot of kids over the years, including Carlos Palomino.

Speaking of Carlos Palomino . . . Armand Muniz was sitting at my "Fritzie Zivic Table" and Carlos stopped by to say hello to his old friend, and two-time challenger for his welterweight title. When I saw the two men embrace, I leaned over to my dad and asked if remembered the night more than three decades back when he, my Uncle Jess and I all were ringside for the first Palomino-Muniz fight? Dad remembered, and I'll never forget it. Mando stormed out an put Carlos on the deck, fought him tough until the last couple rounds. Armando was stopped in the 15th. This was the first world championship bout in history to be fought by two college graduates. Both are in top shape, reflect their education, and have a lot of class.

Speaking of Class . . . We all know our pal Randy, so it's not surprising to discover that his cousins, Louie and Rocky Burke were cut from the same piece of cloth.
What gentlemen. I was happy to introduce Rocky to our Gwen Adair, and the two refs had a nice talk. I also introduced him to Bill Young, son of one LA's best ever refs, the late Dick Young. But Rocky was a "Little Red" Lopez fan, and he and Danny had a nice chat before the event got underway. Louie Burke gave a touching speech and when we talked together, I felt as if I'd known the guy my whole life. I wish him the best with his world champ Austin Trout, whom Louie has been teaching since he was ten years old. In addition to whipping Freddie Roach twice in the ring, As a trainer, Louie can make one claim that Roach cannot. Louis has trained a world champion from his first day in the gym to a world title. Roach is a great trainer of many champions, but none started their career under Freddie.

I think the Baltazar and De La O families are two of the best looking families I've ever seen. :OhYes:

These are just a few of the thoughts that come to mind. I'll post more later.

Sounds like everybody had a great time. Wish I could have been there.

Your comments about Carlos and Armando remind me of my experience last year. After last year's banquet, Carlos and Armando sat out by the pool for at least an hour talking and laughing it up. A casual observer who didn't know better would have thought they were old high school or college buddies getting together for a few beers, certainly not two world-class boxers who tried to beat the hell out of each other 40 years earlier. Classy guys, indeed!

Eddie Booker . . .

Remy, if you look on the back page of your souvenir program you'll find a complete list of inductees. Booker has not yet been inducted.
You might talk to Frank about Booker, and you might want to consider a sponsorship, as do historians who support a boxer from the past.
This year Tom Ray sponsored Bob Fitzsimmons, and I sponsored Fritzie Zivic. This is how we support the CBHOF and keep it going.
As for Booker, I'm well aware of his career, more than worthy.
You know the right people and have the power to influence, if you think he needs to be in, make it happen. :OhYes:

How did I miss "Windmill" White?

I didn't hear his introduction, I looked up and he was beginning to speak.
Earlier in the year I had big plans about interviewing Ray, on camera, but changed my plans a couple weeks ago.
I could have at least searched out his table and reintroduce myself to one of brightest memories of my era.
He was funny. How serious must we take life, and boxing, as to not appreciate a guy who really put himself in the line of fire pulling his gags, making faces.
I remember my grandmother would watch boxing on thursday nights with my grandfather and I. She really had no choice.
My grandmother was from England, so she liked Allen Syers, and she also liked Windmill White. She would laugh when he grabbed his nose after being popped in the face. "Ouch!"
And, I never really thought of this until now, but my Grandmother's father was an Irishman, her maiden name was "White".
A few years later I'd fight on several boxing cards with Ray. Places like the Long Beach Arena, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and the Valley Music Theatre.
He once paid me a compliment after I defeated one of his boxers in an amateur fight, the '69 Golden Gloves semi-finals.
Here I have a chance to shake his hand, and I blew it. As Mel Epstein would say . . . "Dumb bastid!" :witzend:

I echo Tom Ray's sentiments. Looks like a Grand affair and wish I was there.
Very Classy Organization and a full house in attendance. It is no wonder the CBHOF is like that because of the support of the wonderful staff it has running it.

The pictures look dynamite and the stars in attendance made for a great time I'm sure.
Frank Aragon looks just like his dad.Has his facial features.
You all look outstanding. Thank You for the postings and stories.
Glad you met some of your heroes of the past, Rick, as I enjoy your rememberances above.
Excellent, Excellent !
Remy, I hope you had room for dessert :TU: Well worth the trip I'm sure.

Did Don Fraser make it ? I hope he is well.

Charlie, it was a great day.
Don not only made it, but his great MC was forced to pull out of the event on short notice, so Don and his friend, Ken Green, handled the mic.
I don't believe that Frank Aragon is related to Art, at least he is not one of his sons.
By the way, I grabbed an extra program for you. I'll put it in the mail later this week.

My weekend just ended and the Burkes just left our home about 30 minutes ago. This was one of the best weekends I have had in quite a while. The last week has been a whirlwind and I am beat and ready to get to bed. I'll post some photos tomorrow. It was great seeing everyone and it was great to finally meet Remy. A true gentleman.

Now, off to bed!
